What a hidden gem this museum is! I remember visiting this home/museum as a child, and it brought back so many memories as an adult. Visits are by appointment only, but Keith is very responsive to requests. The Gadsden Museum has been run by descendants of Colonel Albert J. Fountain (defense attorney for Billy the Kid is just one of his many accomplishments) since 1931. Photos are not allowed in the museum, but you will not forget what you see because Keith brings the displays and artifacts to life with his storytelling. Highlights include an original painting of The Gadsden Purchase by Albert J Fountain Jr, a collection of Santero Art in the family chapel, a Peace Medal, a 36 Star US Flag, items from the Hermit--Juan Maria Justiniani, and the original jail doors from Billy the Kid's jail cell. (A photo op is available here.) Definitely worth trying to get a visit if you are in the Las Cruces/Mesilla, NM area. The Gadsden Museum is closed Sunday-Tuesday. Call (575) 526-6293 for an appointment to visit on a Wednesday-Saturday. read more
