But by far our favorite evening was spent on the banks of the Duro river, drinking wine and ordering small plates of food at Wine Quay Bar. We got really lucky to get a primo spot overlooking the Douro at the wine bar; it was picture perfect. With the help of the server we ordered a Douro Valley wine - a dry, fruity white. It was tastilicious. This place had an all appetizer menu -- like tapas in Spain. We had olives, a sublime soft sheep's milk cheese, bread, sardines in tomato sauce and pigs feet ... indescribably succulent, all of it. This place is a no-brainer for some of the most amazing food and wine in one of the most beautiful places one could enjoy them.

They have a great selection of wines and ports. We started with a ruby port and a Madeira. The service was great and both were very good. They brought out some popcorn as well which was nice. We then had a 20 year tawny port that was excellent. It is a very comfortable place and great for couples or groups. Then we did not eat, but saw them preparing a meat and cheese plate. They put so much care into and it looked fabulous. Definitely worth a visit.

The menu was so tempting that we had a hard time making decisions. We started with the seia cheese and smoked ham croquettes. They did not disappoint! Ooey gooey goodness served with a lovely quince sauce that left us wanting to lick the plate. We settled on sharing the smoked sausage rice served in a spent seia cheese shell. Words cannot even begin to explain how incredibly decadent this dish was. It was more than enough to share, yet even as we were both full we could not stop indulging in it. It became richer as the steaming hot rice sausage and vegetable mixture continued to melt more of the sidewall cheese into the combination. We also could scoop melty cheese directly off the wall inside the bowl. I didn't think about it at the time, but if we had saved the crisps that are served with complementary olives on arrival we could have spread some of the cheese onto them as well. Alas- hopefully someone else can give that a try on our recommendation. Although too full for dessert, the cocoa cake was recommended as a house specialty. It is really more of a rich chocolate brownie or torte and is served with an incredible salted caramel sauce and topped with a dainty scoop of a fantastic goat cheese ice cream with flavoring along the lines of a creamy cheesecake. Such an absolutely lovely meal served by wonderful staff! Reuben and Maria made us feel very welcome and the staff at Rei Dos Queijos apparently speak every language there is. 4 mixed drinks, appetizer, shared entree and dessert €54. Not too shabby!
