If you're into banging, yet credible dance music, then Sub Club is probably still your best bet in Scotland. It's won various awards over the years, none of which I can remember. To be honest, I just don't get the exceptionally repetitive thudding of Saturday nights, and as good as Optimo was, once the style of music they played inadvertently became trendy, it lost much of what made it good in the first place. I've been to a couple of Drum n Bass nights which have been pretty good, but possibly not worth the headaches and the ringing in your ears afterwards. I did once get a shot at DJing in here on a Subcity night, and despite it being practically empty, the fact that I got everyone dancing to my favourite TLC tune, summed up the club for me. The punters are pretty open to anything, and don't give a toss as long as it sounds good. You can't ask for much more than that in a club.

There has never been one time when i have walked into a busy room and felt like people were having fun! Instead, i have been faced with empty dance floors, overpriced, watered down vodka and music that doesn't quite hit the spot. I know people who are avid Palace fans, who never miss a weekend in the place, but i guess it's just not the right place for me. It does cater to many different people; Subia, the bar for 18-25 year olds, All Stars, for an older clientèle about 25+ and Oxygen, a dance floor with RnB and Dance to name a few. I admire that they are striving to keep everyone happy, but they have just missed the mark with me, and i can't put my finger on why.

Booted out in some 80s gear we headed to Reflex and were immediately entranced by the tracks of the 80s. The videos of the songs are played on screens around the venue providing a giggle at some of those hairdos! With the drinks menu mainly consisting of cocktails we made our way through some interesting looking jugs (sadly they were not at 80s' prices - but about average really). We all got into the swing of it buying much of the novelty merchandise (I still have my "Frankie says Reflex" t-shirt). The crowd was mixed with a lot of older people who loked like they did belong in the 80s but they only added to the authenticity. The thing to point out about this place is not the drinks (the usual generic mince), not the music (cheesy poppy, nowt to write home about) or the decor (think student flat turned into a club), it's mostly that this places appears to have a partial cloaking device which hides it from a large percentage of the fannies who frequent clubs on a Saturday night. Ok so you're not going to be able to avoid all the numpties, but in comparison to them there clubs on the street of Sauchiehall, this place is relatively fanny free. We entered The Buff Club and we were honestly a bit disappointed when we found the only people in there were a group of guys. It felt like social dancing back at school where no one actually got up to dance. It was the first time any of us had actually been to Buff Club. I discovered a staircase which I then found took us down to The Butterfly and Pig where there was a brilliant Jazz/soul/swing type outfit on and the place was bouncing! After they had finished up we went again to The Buff Club and the place was starting fill up and it was looking promising, we were busting a move, and then we discovered ANOTHER floor, and the tunes were brilliant. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Frankin and Tina Turner! Brilliant! The atmosphere was brilliant, everyone was so friendly and the place was just full of people who wanted to dance to some decent tunes. Drinks were quite expensive, but I suppose that's the price you pay for free entry and £1 drinks every other night of the week. I thoroughly enjoyed The Buff Club and I imagine I'll be there again in the very near future.

The Hamilton Palace has reciently been upgraded but the vibe is still the same. Expensive to get in and expensive alcohol, however with the lack of anything else nearby, what other choice do you have. The Allstar's nightclub is doownstairs and can be either a hit or a miss. The 30' somethings are located one floor up and can be too busy and rather hot inside. It now has beds and boths in it to bring it into the 21st century. The piano bar is just the same, karaoke and a good laugh, though this area is really small. There is also a restraunt in the Hamilton Palace, although I have never been in it. Upstairs above there is the over 25's which has a round dancefloor. this is probably one of the best rooms however is really busy. The next floor up is Baby Janes with also the added oval VIP area, although I really don't know why it has one to be honest. Baby Jeans is all the ned and headbanging music and to be fair not a pleasent experiance. Overall the Hamilton Palace is an expensive place and can be really hard to get served drinks. The toliets are clean and there is also a cloak room if needed.
