This is a great place…read more I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed my 7-year-old up for BJJ classes, but we've all been pretty thrilled with the experience. The coaches do a great job running sessions with a wide range of ages and abilities. They strike a perfect balance between keeping things fun and keeping things serious. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive and the facility is spacious and clean.

On a trip to visit my family in the area, I asked a friend which BJJ academy he recommended and he…read morequickly said BJJ United. It happened to be super close to where I was staying so I went to check them out. Now that I've been to a few classes, I can say that even if I hadn't been staying close, I'd travel to get my training here! I was really impressed with the facility upon walking in. Honestly, years of driving down Old York Rd., I never noticed this place on the corner but looks are definitely deceiving from the outside. I was actually intimidated by how much space there was! I'm really glad there were water fountains too because I had forgotten my water bottle. Anyway, I was able to make it to mostly the midday gi classes that start at 11:30 and one evening nogi class and was glad to get instruction from different instructors, all black belts, and to spar with belts of all different levels. The academy where I train regularly in LA county is fairly young so we don't have too many higher level belts to train with so it was fun to continuously get challenged. I really enjoyed the focused skill training and the ample amount of time left in class to just roll. One thing that stuck out to me was that there was always room for everyone to start from standing instead of seated. Most academies I've been to start from sitting so I don't get much experience from standing, where all fights start from anyway so I was happy about that. All of this is to say that I will definitely be back!

I'm not the type of person that is big on the GYM. I hate going and have trouble forcing myself. So…read morethe other night at 11pm I was thinking I have to do something. I need a hobby man. I search to see what the deal was with this gym I passed a few times while biking. I saw it was an MMA gym and they were having a $19 week. So you can go to as many classes as you want in one week for $19. So I was like ok I'll try it. Being weird and uncomfortable in my own skin like I am I was anxious to walk in. So the next day i got a text from them. I replied I wanted to go over the options with someone in person. So they said stop in a little early. I got there at 5:40 while a kids class was going on. The owner sauntered over and introduced himself. Thanked me for coming. He seems like a very zen type of person. He showed me where to sit while the front desk helped someone else. Guy at the front desk was super helpful and easy to talk to. He gave the down low and didn't apply any pressure to sign up now OR DIE. You know how some places are. He just got me ready and then showed me where to go. The 101 class was really cool. A lot of people were new or just there to learn self defense. I didn't feel like there was any competitive I have to be the best. Everyone was pleasant and there to learn. Good mix of people too. The 101 class started on time and shot straight into drills. There was no time wasted in the hour class. So anyway I was impressed so I went back to the front desk. Again no pressure. He was just like oh how did you like it? He showed me a few benifits of signing up in the next 24 hours and then was going to leave it at that. I was like no sign me up now. So I got 2 weeks free, got my $19 back and got a discount on the sign up fee. All in all it came out to $169 a month I think. I wont be billed til April. The owner came over again while eating a banana and asked if I liked it too. I wanted to go back for the next 101 on Wednesday but my arms are really sore. So I'll wait til Friday.

Artie was able to cater the entire workout to my abilities and my strengths while building on my weaknesses with training I would never be able to achieve on my own at a traditional box gym. I highly recommend Artie at the Strongroom as a personal trainer. If this is something you have been on the fence about, just do it! You won't regret it!

At Semper Fi, new kids are eagerly welcomed into the fold by the other kids and parents are quickly welcomed by other parents. There are no cliques and everyone is very open. When you join you are welcomed into a family like environment: There is no supremacy complex here. Higher belts help lower belts and learn even more while doing so. Their technique is refined and every class you practice what you know and learn something new. Sensei Julio is incredible. He establishes a safe environment for students to learn in a way that is technical, rule-based, and effective, but always fun. Even after a class where someone is corrected and doing push-ups or after a class where you just can't get the move down, every person leaves with a smile and a desire to come back and get back on the mat. Even more impressive is the feeling of family. Sensei Julio sponsors and provides all the eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt. His depth of caring for his students and the community is apparent, and he does all he can to make Semper Fi a positive community partner. With every class I witness, I see these children becoming a force unto themselves. Each class they walk a little straighter, and approach each new skill with more confidence and fire. They take that belief and confidence into other parts of their lives. If you are looking to enroll your child(ren), want to do kickboxing, yoga, or MMA yourself, I would highly recommend you take a look at Semper Fi.
