Today my family of four enjoyed another trip down the lower Kern and several class 3 & 4 rapids. We were treated well, the guides were professional, and we all felt safe. The changing station just has a dirt floor, which really surprised me (we prefer to get clean!). The general service was mediocre, but the guides were absolutely amazing. We had originally booked the high tower spot for our large group, which was not ideal. It was right off the main road and not behind the gate like the rest of the campground. After expressing our need to change locations, we were accommodated and it was no problem. We booked spot 19 which was close to the bathrooms and beautiful! Several of our campers opted to RV camp and took other surrounding spots. We are avid tent campers. This campground was pristine! The bathrooms were so clean! Showers had great water pressure and hot water immediately. The best part, there was a golf cart checking in at each campground for extra firewood and ice. They'd deliver it to you and charge your card on file. You could also text the camp host for ice or firewood. The camp store was great. Had everything you could need! We can't wait to come back!!!

She seemed very interested in who we were and where we were from. She was very engaging and sweet. This made me feel very comfortable. When we got to the site I was impressed with the size, location and cleanliness. It was beautiful, you can even set up a tent to overlook the river. It also came with power, water spout and a sink to wash dishes! Not sure if this is with all sites but it was with ours. Access to the water was very easy and only took maybe a 100 steps. This helped immensely as the heat was in the high 90s. We would hit the river to cool off and head back to the campsite. The water level was low but it made it easier to just relax as the current was strong but not over-the-top. It was also very quiet and at night you could see some skunks and stuff sniffing around. The place as a whole was very nice, clean and quiet. One issue I did have was the toilet issue. In the mornings there were lines for the Men's toilets. Also, the power went out (I understand we are supposed to rough it when camping) mid day and didn't turn on until night. I understand it was not their fault but it was still apart of my experience. Tips: Utilize the Camp Host, he is very helpful especially with ice and wood. And maybe bring a portable restroom for those early mornings.

After parking in the parking lot, you walk across a man bridge heading towards the yellow stairs that will take you down towards the river. I would NOT recommend this trails for young kids. If you lose your footing, you can fall several feet to rocks below and then into the river. The trail itself is very nice, however some areas are tough and you have to climb over a few rocks. There are a few really awesome camp sites along the river trail, looks like first come first serve. After hiking about 2 miles, you come to the Seven Teacups (waterfall) This trail is always awesome to me, can't wait to come back.

Great trail for a quick hike…read more If you're able to survive the first 14 miles of the Kern River Canyon with your lunch in your stomach, you're almost there. Exit the 178 at Kern Canyon Rd and go for approximately 2.5 miles to find the trailhead. The trail is maintained by Kern Back Country Horsemen of California. Judging by the tracks in the mud, mountain bikes, horses, and cows all use the trail, but on this particular day I just saw people and their dogs. Although the trail is 7 miles in length, we only did 3.5 miles. We started off at an elevation of 2400' and made our way up to 4200'. We encountered four streaks that were easy to cross by jumping on rocks. The trail itself was all uphill and for the most part had wonderful scenery.

Very interesting…read more Sometimes, well before Covid anyway, people would come and they would have something going on at the preserve where other people would come and show what animals or plants, just anything that you could literally find at the preserve that they had ppl bring their stuff and teach us about different snakes that are Indigenous to this area and won't harm you, and which will. People have been here before and pointed out the difference in good plants, harmful plants, plants people have different not wonderful reactions to like stinging nettle and what it looks like. It's really interesting stuff. Call and find out if there are tours or if the trails are open for hiking due to covid, as maybe the trails are overgrown??? Some on the backside of the lake look very bad. I was given tours there when we were in jr college at Cerro Coso Community College in Lake Isabella (21 yrs ago). I've had them teach us things too when there's an event, so look for that. I don't know if anything's going on their since Covid? Definitely a super hidden gem in the Kern River Valley…read more Kern River Preserve has always been on my list of places to visit and finally, over the summer, I had a chance to explore. Mind you, the heat can be somewhat unbearable in July. And in all likelihood Spring and Fall are the more common seasons. A little background of the Kern River Preserve. It's actually owned by the National Audubon Society. It's also located in one of the largest contiguous riparian forests in the stata at 3,000 acres. There is a small visitors center. I highly suggest calling before arriving to find out if there will be a docent or guide. Best times to visit are spring. You'll get the best of flora and fauna with blooming flowers and migratory birds. ' The Kern Audubon Society is a wealth of knowledge and happy to help with info.
