One of the exhibits had guided tours, but due to the event, there wasn't enough staff to handle all the tourists. Speaking of not enough, I can't speak for regular days, but during the events, parking is going to get crazy. There were cars parked on the right side of the trail leading up to the mansion. The mansion's backyard (I don't know what to call it) is quite big and you should bring the family to just play around there. As far as I can tell it's free, and they do take donations to preserve or revive the lilacs.

Come very early or really late to snag a metered parking space otherwise you will end up paying exorbitant prices just to park in someone's yard. LOL! THE SAND SCULPTURES ARE MAGNIFICENT & COLOSSAL IN SIZE. If you love crowds come here during Prime Time. If you hate crowds they've got you covered too. They keep the Sand Sculptures up for a week after the event & they even have it illuminated at night. You will avoid a lot of the crowd & traffic too. This Event is located about an hour's drive from Boston. Every June Hampton Beach in New Hampshire hosts its Masters Sand Sculpture Shindig. Artists from all over the country & Canada & their fans come to see these Stupendous Sand Structures. The Event is held on Ocean Ave between B & C Streets from 8AM-5 PM. In 2021 they also had Free bands playing outdoors for the festivities. 2021 marked the 21st Annual Year for The Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Classic. Some 200 tons of imported sand is plopped on the beach & the "Grady Bunch" starts pounding up the sponsor site. Greg Grady & The Grady Bunch" built a colossal Demo made out of Sand., There was "Sand, Sun and Fun for 2021" There were 10 World Class Master Sand Sculptors & Over $25,000 in Prizes. There was a HUMONGOUS 100 Ton Sponsor Site that was erected too. There was Judging with Winners including a Peoples Choice Award. They also had T Shirts on sale across from the Seashell Stage at BZ Beach Supply. The 2022 dates for the 22nd Annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Classic are June 16-18, 2022 Saturday evening there will be Fireworks Display as well. This year's event promises to be just as Good as last year! You can read all the details on their website. Then after you're done viewing the Sand Sculptures take a dip in the ocean or set up your own private picnic lunch on the beach. Cross the street & see block after block of the Boardwalk with lots of shops to buy T Shirts, Beach supplies, trinkets & gifts. There are lots of eateries here too with many different types of food offerings. There are Fun Arcades like Playland & Funarama that have Vintage Arcade Machines from the 60's & 70's at prices you won't believe .25 & .50 cent. There's Mitchell's Gift Shop a Classic from 1966. Then there's Blink's Fry Doe another Beach Classic & a real throwback - a Rexall Drug Store with Vintage Signs. They also have a Casino Ballroom that brings in a lot of big name entertainers for concerts. You can spend the entire day & night here & lots of people do. The museum is broken up into different sections. They do give you a map but it's a little confusing to follow along, so I suggest just walking through and just reading what's there. Some markings around the museum to correspond with the map would be helpful. There are about 5 rooms so it doesn't take too long to walk through, depends on what kind of museum goer you are. They are currently only open Wednesday and Saturday from 10-2pm. There is an admission fee ($7 adults, $3 children, $15 family) but they offer discounts for AAA members, seniors, military and Kittery residents!

There are so many nice displays and artifacts. They even have a telescope from the mid 1700's I really enjoyed my visit. Especially the first order Fresnel lens! If you're ever in kittery you should definitely stop by and check it out! It's worth it!

We met a man who was working (or was he just hanging out? not sure) there and was nice enough to give us a special tour of the place! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Portsmouth and was so passionate about the town. I saw some really neat artifacts here, including whale vertebrae...which totally made me squeal in excitement. Just take a visit to the Portsmouth Athenaeum and strike up a conversation. You never know what you will discover!

We went to the North End History exhibit and it was super-informative and very interesting. Lots of neat old photos and details about parts of Portsmouth we drive by on a regular basis without realizing their historical significance. Ask for James, ask a few questions, and sit back and laugh as he takes the history of the area and wraps it up in funny and memorable stories and anecdotes. Just a note - finish your food and coffee before visiting. There are some incredibly old books in this place and you don't want to spill!

Touring the actual sub can be done in 20-30 min. If you're claustrophobic, the first couple areas are tight but it soon opens up. If you have mobility issues, it'll be tough to maneuver. This doesn't take away from my experience but something to consider for others. The attached museum/gift shop is nice and packs in a lot. It's a one time visit for me but glad I went.

(He came from Newburyport, and some of his books involve towns largely based on Newburyport.) I visited the museum mainly because it has a room of Marquand artifacts. However, the museum is not mainly about John Marquand (who you should read by the way!). It's about the maritime history of Newburyport. I had the real treat of having Susan, a volunteer docent, give me a personal guided tour. She made the artifacts come to life by explaining their historical context in relation to one another and made learning about Newburyport's maritime history--something in which I was not initially all that interested--fun. I felt very spoiled and grateful to have her all to myself. Other than the Marquand exhibit, my favorite part of the museum was the beautiful models of boats, which are works of art in their own right. I care about the the design of museums, and the maritime museum is very thoughtfully arranged. In contrast to a number of local historical museums I have visited, each exhibit room adheres to its subject, the artifacts are spaced out so as to let you know where to rest your eyes, and there are thoughtful captions in sufficiently large print.
