You'll find all the typical Danish fare here, including pastries, breads and cakes of just about every kind you could ever want for. I've sampled a bit of everything over the last few years, but the pastries stand out as the best. My personal favorite would definitely be their rum balls, especially since they've recently added the enormous, grapefruit-sized variety to their offerings. I've yet to meet anyone, Danish or otherwise, that can down one of those big'uns in a single sitting. Trust me, I've tried and was easily defeated! In addition, as with most bakeries, you can buy pre-made Christmas cookies here during the holiday season. On the weekend, they had baked goods for sale right out on the sidewalk in the main pedestrian area of Odense. They offered up free samples of their chocolate rye bread. When you walk inside, you get to see the bakers at work, rolling and kneading dough, and get wonderful wafts of the cinnamon and dough. You really cannot go wrong with anything they sell. Grab a coffee and sit and enjoy. They also sell a few sandwiches, but we never tried them.

It's mainly a take-out restaurant (or "take away", like they call it here). But we ate there anyway since we're tourists and didn't want to eat in our hotel room. My dad liked his pastas and the pizza was freshly made and awesome. Don't be scared of what the restaurant looks like. It's a nice little place to eat.

No visit to Odense's lovely Gågade shopping district is complete without taking in a French hotdog…read moreat this tiny, almost literal hole in the wall food stand. That goes doubly during the winter months, when there's nothing more comforting and delicious than indulging in a tantalizing bit of typical Danish street food! Nestled between a couple of multistory buildings, you'd probably miss this place unless, like me, you had the good fortune of traveling with a local that knew how to find such hidden gems. There are other places throughout Gågade to get a hot dog, but this place often has the best prices, the least crowds and the best food. The ambiance that you get from being nestled in a out of the way breezeway with shelter from the weather is an added bonus. I'm not sure they even call it Gittes anymore, as I know they've changed ownership, but it's the same operation it always was, and I still look forward to it on every single trip to Gågade that I make. Service has always been quick, food quality has never been an issue and they're just about always open. You simply can't go wrong stopping here with a good friend and downing one of Denmark's crowning achievements, the French hotdog. Highly recommended to anyone that happens to be day tripping in Gågade!
