My first visit to the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg was in 2006. I did the entire 45-minute tour…read moreand loved it. Canada has two Mint locations. The original is in Ottawa. My timing visiting that one was never great. I ultimately did a tour there in 2019 for the first time and loved it. Both tours require that you book in advance these days. You also cannot take photos during the tour. The Ottawa Mint has been kicking around since 1908. That location produces world-renowned collector coins, gold and silver bullion, and medals and medallions. This Mint in Winnipeg was established in 1976. Its main purpose was to be a high‑tech, high‑volume manufacturing facility. It still is! Every single Canadian circulation coin is produced here, as well as circulation coins for countries around the world. Its tour hours during the summer start at 9:30 am, with the last tour set to start at 3:30 pm. Both have a gift shop where you can purchase commemorative coins and more. I was in the area on a late Saturday afternoon. The Mint had closed for the day. I still drove over here to check it out. The main entrance had a Canadian flag flower bed cross from it. It looked beautiful. The main entrance has a loon statue in front of it. I didn't remember it being there when I last visited. What was new to me was the Parade of Flags. It was established to honour the Mint's international customers. It was a nice touch. I drove through it three times. It's one of the benefits of coming here when the Mint is closed and no one is around. The first time was to admire all the flags and try to figure out the countries. I went through a second time to do a video. I somehow put it on time lapse mode, which went through the entire tour in six seconds. Nooo! I went back a third time and recorded it at a regular pace. I was driving slowly, so maybe it wasn't that regular... haha! There is a decent amount of parking here. There are also block heaters for your car when it's frigid outside in the wintertime. It was great returning here. It was an unplanned visit. I'm glad that I caught the Parade of Flags. (325)

The building itself is striking, with its modern architecture set against the open prairie backdrop, and the moment you pull up, you know you're somewhere unique. I absolutely love the parade of flags out front -- it's such a proud and beautiful touch, showcasing all the countries that have had their coins produced right here in Winnipeg. It really drives home the global importance of this facility, and it's something you won't see anywhere else in Canada, except Ottawa. Inside, the guided tours are informative and surprisingly fun. You get to see where millions of coins are made and learn about how the Mint operates for both Canada and dozens of other countries. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, clearly passionate about what they do. The gift shop is also worth a stop -- lots of unique collector's coins, souvenirs, and fun items to browse. There's also some smaller exhibits/informative boards that visitors shouldn't miss, especially younger visitors. Yes, it's a bit of a drive from downtown Winnipeg, but it's one of those attractions that makes you appreciate just how much world-class work happens quietly right here in Manitoba. A must-see for anyone visiting the city.
