Great greasy spoon food! I've been comin' here for prolly almost 25 years if not more now. I used to drink bottomless coffee here w my friends in my teens with so much sugar in it u could stand a spoon upright. No lies. (Good news: I now cannot take a sip of coffee that has so much as a tiny grain of sugar in it, hahaha.)
I forgot how damn good the poutine with brown gravy is here! Not every Green Stop, just here in Chats (might be the only thing worth comin' out here for). Amazing gravy, amazing fries, perfect québecois cheese curd. Ohhh it's a thing of simple beauty, folks.
The smoked meat... I'm sure that has changed. I remember it being thick carved deli stylez like Reubens, but it was thin sliced shaved deli stylez, more like pastrami. She asked if I wanted it lean which noooo! Medium Fat of course (was very pleased when they asked that question because I was happy to picture a brisket) so I was kinda surprised when it arrived so thin. It was definitely freshly sliced and it was melt in the mouth delicious! Ain't no downstairs-Reubens, let's b real, but it was damn good. Decent fresh rye bread, great dill pickle.
(Though, why places insist on serving a wedge vs the whole pickle really irks me nowadays. I mean, it's a pickled cucumber ppl it is NOT that expensive, gimme the whollllle picklllllle).
No drinks list? Though it is BYOW, I was expecting a list of milkshakes, sodas, coffee and tea...hell possibly even a rootbeer float. But no drinks menu to be found. We ordered "a coke?". And got one so that was good.
Awful service. Awful. Lady very seriously had an issue serving anglophones. Bitter ol' bitty, she was. I am perfectly happy and proud to be québécoise and bilingual, but one issue that has always pissed me right off is being treated like some outsider in my own damn province, in my own damn country, near the city I was BORN. She refused to give us good service (other tables received sweet service, I noticed, and were *shocker* francophone yet did not appear to be acquaintances, this happens more frequently in Châteauguay than anywhere else I've encountered). Also service precarious.. I know the tremens when I sees them.
She dumped one glass of water almost entirely on my dad, he managed to block the falling glass (with a menu!) so he didn't get wet. Every plate she brought looked like it may break her wrist and they were sliding out of her hand when she reached them across the table, we all reached to grab our plates before any unfortunate accidents could occur. She sat us at a crappy table all the way around the corner in the back, even though there were many nicer and empty group tables in the front (which would have been less walking for her to bring our food, so she chose to suffer her symptoms longer to hide us back there).
I will end my review by saying she is but one bad element of an otherwise totally decent greasy spoon diner. I'm sure her shift could be easily avoided or boycotted. Though, she did sour what was a very pleasant night and tha's not worth spending $ on, so they gotta take a hit on the stars. I remember having good times here, good times and am lookin forward to a better waitress restoring my faith in this particular Green Stop.
I did originally end this review with a political rant, but I thought, hey why not be the bigger person. I'm proud to be Québécoise and ppl like her are not the norm. En français svp bien sur, mais en anglais aussi parfois, mais si pas possible au moins la politesse, et ça c'est notre culture. Nous sommes tous né ici, même si on s'est retrouvé parmi une famille anglo ;) .
