Consider our first trip to Maginhawa a reward for me of sorts. It was a Saturday morning, and I'd had to get up early to join my wife at a client's showroom all the way over at Commonwealth (we live in Mandaluyong) for an event she had to attend. So yes, our going to Maginhawa (for the first time) was a reward for my getting up early and accompanying her. I'd looked up the different restaurants and cafes along Maginhawa the night before, but I'd actually gotten even more confused. So many choices! So we just kept driving and talking about what each of us wanted to eat, until we happily settled on Italian. Friuli is a small place. Think 60 square meters small. And to get to the second floor, you have to take this dizzying, spiral staircase with steps shorter than a 10 year-old's feet. Ah, but the food. Cheese sticks longer and thicker than your fingers. Pizzas overflowing with toppings. Huge pasta bowls. We ate our fill and then some, taking home almost half a pizza. All for the low, low price of less than P300 a head. At that value, you could make me eat in a cardboard box.

Italian food is definitely one of my all-time favorites; however, most restaurants that serve Italian cuisine are really expensive. If I'm going to pay for something, I make sure it's worth it. If you are looking for cheap Italian comfort food, Friuli is the place for you. When my friends and I decided to go to Maginhawa to satisfy our pizza and pasta craving, we ended up going to Friuli. Pizza prices in Friuli range from 190 to 250 pesos, while their gourmet meals cost 240 to 270 pesos. All meals they offer are served in big portions and are reasonably priced. We ordered the Meat Lovers pizza which had lean ground beef, ham, pepperoni, and Italian sausages. My friends and I decided to order a classic pepperoni pizza for 205 pesos. One order was enough to keep us full the whole day. Besides good food, Friuli also has a very cozy and comfortable setting, perfect for barkada and family hangouts.

Friuli Trattoria is a small, simple restaurant that serves classic Italian pasta and pizza at affordable prices. Honestly, I didn't expect much from it because of its interior. It had plastic chairs and tables, old checkered table cloths, and a leaking air conditioner. However, their food definitely made up for those previous details. My friends and I went there during one of our breaks, and we let the one who knew more about the place decide on what to order. So, we got the Angel Hair Putanesca, Tuna & Mushroom pasta, Spiced Romano Pizza, and the Marinara Pizza. The food was simple yet scrumptious, and they turned out to be more than enough for the four of us. Later, I was surprised to learn that our orders of 2 pizzas, 2 pastas, and a pitcher of Iced tea only cost us around P700! It's a steal, guys. Go try it!

Friuli Trattoria is a humble and no-frills Italian restaurant on Maginhawa street that has been on my radar ever since I heard it serves good food at an affordable price, which is rare to come by with Italian cuisine. In fact, I weep for all the days I spent dining either at overpriced pizza places or fast food joints, when all this time, Friuli Trattoria has been offering students a median between the two extremes. With the permeating smell of cheese compelling us not to settle for just one pizza, my mother and I requested for half of the Tre Formaggi (P190) and half of the All Meat (P250) in one pan. I liked the three-cheese pizza best--because I freaking love cheese, even more so if there's mozzarella and blue cheese--but my mom preferred the meat pizza for its mix of lean ground beef, pepperoni, ham, and Italian sausages. The crust of both pizzas was thin and full, not baked too crisp to the point that you can't relish eating the crust in itself. Servings are not too big yet they can be very filling. We had to put the mozzarella sticks (P145) and the spaghetti con nuts & basil sauce (P150) in a bag to take home. I think their pizzas are the stars of Friuli Trattoria, but next time I will make sure I have room to taste their gelato cake.

Delicious, filling, and freshly made pizzas without the pomp and flare. It's a blessing from the heavens to a young adult with constant pizza cravings. The best thing about it is that it's affordable, and definitely good for sharing. What I like to do when I'm with a friend is that we each choose the type of pizzas we want that should be more or less of the same price, then order our pizza half what I want, and half whatever my companion wants. No other pizza parlors I know could do that! I guess that's one of the things that just make this place unique and well-loved by students and families.

I get so excited when it comes to delicious Italian food that I even look forward to the complimentary bread Italianni's serves. Sometimes, I really can't understand myself. Oh well. We often order some olive oil and balsamic vinegar, so that we could dip the bread into the mixture and top it off with some Parmesan cheese. They serve lovely, palatable meals that have adequate servings. I really liked their Fettuccine Tartufo e Prosciutto which is basically just pasta with some truffle cream and prosciutto. The truffle flavor really blended well with the salty Italian ham, and I remember scarfing it down like there's no tomorrow!
