I've always thought that the building looks exactly how a library should look-very old and historic! I think it gives a good feeling for learning. Inside the library doesn't take up a huge amount of the building and is actually qutie small, although they do have a seperate room for computers and children which I think is a really nice touch. The selection of books is pretty good and ordering books from other libraries is relatively cheap and doesn't take too much time. I've always found the staff there to be really friendly and while not always the most helpful of people it's not from lack of trying. Sometimes it feels as though they don't know their product quite as well as they should but they're so polite and friendly that it's difficult to fault them for it.

I only live around the corner from this Camden library branch, which is Holly Lodge. And even up to this day, I will always use the services at Highgate Library, for hiring out DVDs, PC printing and the photo copy machine. And I even reserve books and DVD from Highgate Library. Highgate Library is literally right next door to Highgate Cemetery, the place of Karl Marx's tomb.

We did not sign up for cards, and therefor did not get to explore the rooms or stacks, but we did enjoy our walk around. During college (as a history major), it was frequently joked that you haven't really researched in a library if you haven't wound up making out in the stacks... well, after a day of research, I enjoyed some fun pictures and 'making out' with my husband, making this a thoroughly educational stop in our London adventure.

If you plan on seeing any of the actual exhibits or checking out the areas that actually house the books, you'll need to sign up for one of their cards. I also can't really imagine getting much work or studying done here. It can be pretty difficult to find a seat and it's so loud and busy that you may be better off going somewhere else.

But the internet speed connection is super slow. They have photocopy and printing facilitates. I remember i had to print out some photos for my study abroad homework assignments but the pictures did not come out at the right size. (You print out the documents from your workstation and obtain the printouts from their front desk) Frustrated and thought I still had to pay for the printouts, the staff was surprisingly friendly and told me I did not have to pay because the quality was not of my desired outcome. There are also plenty of books/newspapers/magazines/videos to read/rent/checkout for your entertainment.

Have to catch a bus down from Highbury & Islington tube station - otherwise it's quite a long walk along a busy & uninteresting road. Therefore, I would suggest to anyone planning to visit when in theory the library is open (and that is what it says on the website), that you phone first to make sure it is actually open. The other thing is that the slit on the side of the building to return items when the library is closed is not large enough to return audio books.

It is difficult to rate this library because it depends on what you're looking for…read more For children, it's fantastic. They have a nice selection of children's books, with a brightly coloured soft area where you can sit and read them in, before checking them out. They also run some activities for children, a singing/drama kind of thing for toddlers, about which I've only every heard positive things. There is a selection of kids DVD's too, which have a limited, but lovely choice. For adults, the choice is limited by the size of the library, it isn't very big, bug nonetheless if you have a proper look you can find something. The self-check out and book drop off machines are great, they always work well and they're not complicated at all to use. There are also a number of PC's available for use and often you see people doing work on them, or children doing homework. As a study space, it's not ideal. They have a large room at the back with tables and chairs, but during exam season it's hard to find a space because there is only capacity for maybe 10 or 15 people max - you have to get there early to secure a spot. If you have a library card you can access the internet for free, but it logs you out after an hour or so, and then you have to wait 15 minutes before re-connecting which can be a nuisance. Also, they take a break for an hour in the middle of the day which is a bit awkward if you're trying to revise, because then you have to go wait somewhere for an hour before coming back. BUT they are open till 8pm one weekday every week, which is good if you need an extra long study session. All in all, it's a nice place to be, very clean, both staff and other visitors are friendly, but it's not the best place for A-Level or Uni students trying to get in a full day of revision. For everyone else, I highly recommend it.

The Library is quite big in my opinion, it has many books and it provides a great service overall…read more The internet is quite nice, not too fast, yet not slow either. The cafe inside provides some yummi food and has many options. Its connected to the swimming pool and quite close to the tube line, schools and shops. However the library is usually full of young teenagers who, hardly understand the concept of a library. They speak very loudly and nobody tells them otherwise since there is hardly any official librarian strolling along to keep peace. I cant fathom why is a library noisy, yet this one is very often too much to work in. Not only the young teenagers but even the kids can yell their hearts out and you'd still hear it in your seat, since there is no walls separating the kids area from the adults section, just a bookcase.
