First, we were told that the project would take 3 days. When the project started, the employee said he was not given any information about the project. He brought no tools and asked to borrow our hammer, step stool, ladder, and broom. We explained what needed done, expecting some of the ceiling to be replaced. He said he would be in and out in one day. Once he started tearing out the ceiling it was clear that the project was not 1/4 of the ceiling but 1/2. Even then, he explained he used fast drying materials, etc, and would probably by out in 2 days. We prepared for a 4 day project just in case and scheduled cleaners/movers for later in the week. The project took 7 days. He arrived late, up to 2 hours, did not always tell us when he would/wouldn't be there. He would come for an hour, leave for several and then come back for a short time. My wife asked at some point how long he'd be gone because she needed to run to the store. He said he would be back quickly, was running to Wendy's but showed up two hours later. He was not prepared with equipment, and kept referencing another job he was doing down the street. He was put off when my wife asked him to bring his own broom and step stool as it was clear ours would get ruined in the mess. He later told me my wife was "difficult". Totally unprofessional. We were so frustrated by that point, on day 3 we spoke to the owner, who really did not listen to my concerns, just kept repeating that sometimes jobs take longer than expected. On day one he knew the scope of the work, The painting job was horrible. Several times I pointed out how there was paint from the ceiling on our walls (which didn't match) as well as poor coverage of ceiling paint in the corners of the ceiling. Some of it got fixed but then I had to show him again areas that were messy. Having to tell him and his sidekick how to paint correctly is just unacceptable. He later said he thought I was going to touch up the paint. When reinstalling our ceiling fan they could not figure out why it wasn't working. This is a year old fan that the contractor knew worked when they initially took it down. This was also day 5 and the "ceiling fan guy" could not figure out why the ceiling fan wouldn't work after installation. The painting still looked awful which I communicated to them. They tried to find an electrician, even asking me if I knew of someone. The owner explained the project would be delayed until they could find someone to fix the fan. He also asked me if I could go ahead and pay for the project. I said no, I'd pay when the job was completed. Two days later (Sunday) an electrician came and ended up replacing the receiver and remote, using one that did not have the settings our original one had (three speeds for the fan) so we now have a fan that just works on high, with no way to adjust it. Had we known this was the problem and they were going to go out and buy one we would've paid to have one that matched the fan. Now we've had to repurchase a receiver that matches the fan and have it reinstalled. At the end of the job we were not completely satisfied but needed these people out of our house. They did not clean up completely, left spots of paint on the hardwood floors, construction dust on our baseboards, ruined one of the screens in our window, left drips of paint on our walls, left dirty rags and garbage. Honestly, I don't even think the drywall installation on our ceiling looks great. You can clearly see lines where the drywall was installed. We are happy that our issue is "fixed" and we are safe from our ceiling caving in but we are not happy with the cosmetic flaws and the entire process. We will never use this company again.

In the interim I had a few questions and reached out to my estimator, he asked how they compared to the other estimates, I said not the highest or the lowest. The estimator said that is where they wanted to be and asked if I had any questions. All seemed ok. 5 Star did their best to get the go ahead on the project and get on their schedule receiving their latest ask on Wednesday. I replied to the email quote on Wednesday evening and countered 5 star to reduce the total cost, ~4% less than the original quote and mentioned I'd pay cash vs card (very common for businesses to offer a 2 to 3% discount if paying with cash/check. My discount ask was reasonable.). Since it was later in the evening I mentioned I would follow up the next morning. Also sent a text message indicating I replied to the quote and call the next day, trying to be respectful of people's time away from work. Thursday morning arrives, I called a few times, left a message, 5 star did call back, missed the call, phone tag. Still I have not received a response to the email, voice mail or text from 5 Star regarding my counter offer. I sent another text restating the offer, finally I get a text back... stating "Unfortunately, we are completely booked out for our exterior projects this year. Five Star Painting". A simple NO would have been ok, but to disrespect a potential customer is unacceptable. Probably would have let it go after that, but I went their website to contact their main office to share my experience. To my surprise, as I opened their website, an ad appears stating 10% off if you book before 10/31 up to $500 off. This discount was not mentioned or indicated anywhere on the quote. Note: The discount I asked for was less than $500, once again undeserving of the estimators response. The final straw that led to this review happened as I started searching for other painting companies and a at least 3 different Facebook ads for 5 Star popped up, once again touting 10% off and that they have openings in their schedule. I told 5 star that if they did a great job on the exterior, I would have additional interior painting. While I wish this review pertained to quality of work, I can only respond to the poor quality of customer service and how not to treat a potential customer.
