I only surmised that because the previous night, we had been referred to L'Insolite, which was open and very good. The following evening we walked over, but many of the restaurants open the night before were, in fact, closed. So, after perusing the various menu stands, we settled on La Poterne, and we were not disappointed! The service was great and very attentive. The outdoor seating, in a covered porch area, was quite cozy, especially with the plastic sheeting down to protect from windy conditions, and also the standing portable heaters were great. We had great steaks and the French fries, of course, were delightful! The cheese plate was very good, also, with a very nice offering. We noticed that many of the restaurant diners were French, and had a feeling that most were locals, which always makes us feel better about our choice. If the local residents eat there and appear to enjoy themselves, what's to lose, right? That is what we found. Lovely groups with their puppy dogs leashed and cuddled under the tables, having a great time. We were not rushed, we had a leisurely dinner, and a nice conversation later with diners at a nearby table. We were impressed!

I feel that I was there long enough to absorb the culture of the place and to experience it. They never even bothered to ask us if we wanted something to drink or how were were doing etc. After about 40 minutes, we opted to leave because they never bothered to greet us or take our order. I am not sure why they bothered to seat us but over a 16 day period, I dined at restaurants all over France and never had this experience so I think it's important to share with fellow yelpers because this was wrong and we did wind up spending about 95 Euros just down the way from this place so we were for real, just disappointed and surprised.

Maybe he had too many groups paying separate bills but the place was dead with just locals inside and he wasn't busy at all. There is a way to talk to customers. Don't have to be such a douchebag ! Won't go back there just for that! Dude makes weak cocktails !

Run by the nicest couple and their son, modest in size, yet beautifully decorated bar/bistro that serves top notch cocktails and small food plates. My wife was quite happy to have found a wine she loves (and now craves) and the beer menu although small..is world class. Flat breads and cheese plates are terrific. More than delighted to have found this place. We wish we could be there more often..but living in Santa Monica makes that difficult. But we are looking forward to visiting again...soon!

Today I came to this town called Le Havre to visit smaller towns around here. I decided to walk to…read morethe beach on this first day and have some cocktail around the beach. I walked into this restaurant/bar right beside the beach, which was almost the only one open. A guy asked me if I only want to drink or eat foods, and I said I only wanted to drink. And then he "told me to" seat outside with a little unkind attitude. At the moment I just thought outside is for "only drink customer" and inside is for food customer, although my mom got unpleasant a bit. But few minutes later we felt cold, so I asked a server if we could seat inside. She said "sure". I got a little curious about why he told us to seat outside without asking, but it was fine then. While we were having cocktail and crepe inside, the guy was saying something in french to us, looking at us, even though he knew we don't understand french. And! The servers were laughing at his talking, LOOKING AT US. I was little confused if it's just kidding or something bad. We asked the servers what he said and they ONLY SAID "NO"(maybe she meant "nothing"). I hope it's not a discrimination against asian or non-french-speaker, but I strongly felt so. If it was just kidding, she should've tried to tell us what it was about when I asked her with serious face, but she didn't. The thing is, I've never tought someone's attitude to me is like discrimination while I've been visitting 23 different countries. This is so rude.
