This is the type of bike shop that all other bike shops should aspire to. They take care of their customers. They will take the time to swap out a stem and make all reasonable adjustments before you take a bike out for a test ride. No BS, just good service. They primarily carry QBP bikes such as Salsa and Surly. They have a spattering of other stuff such as Trek. All the bikes they sale are top notch. They focus on commuters and mountain bikes. I'm more than happy to drive an hour and a half when I'm in W.PA visiting my parents, just to support this excellent store. read more

About 14 years ago, Freeze/Thaw Cycles gave my 15-year old son a job apprenticing him in the finer points of bike building, tuning, and repair while treating him with respect and friendship. That's the character of this bicycle shop. Since that time, I've purchased two bikes, one frame, and many parts. And I'm looking at another bike for me. These guys know what they're doing, very knowledgeable and charge fair prices. Trying to get to the location can be a pain if you're driving but that's anywhere downtown. I've visited some of the other bicycle stores in State College and Freeze Thaw is at the top of my list when it comes to customer service and prices. Two years ago, I purchased a bike from a different, local bicycle shop in State College, PA. I wish I had known about Freeze Thaw and their excellent service then, because I never would have purchased my bike from that other shop. After a quick assessment and explanation of my problem with my bike (my wrists were aching and my hands going numb after short rides), the fantastic staff at Freeze Thaw took the time to adjust my bike so that it actually fit me and explained which adjustments they were making and why. They didn't pressure me for any additional add-ons or extras; instead they explained some of the options they could do to dial in the fit--both with the bike I had or, if I wanted, other parts (like a different stem or grips). They answered my questions without making me feel stupid even though I was new to biking, and their reasonable service rates made me feel like I received a great value for my purchase. Another great experience with Freeze Thaw! I have bought a couple bikes there and have several service jobs and upgrades. Each time I get something done I am extremely satisfied. Everybody at the shop rides and takes a consultative approach when servicing or selling a bike or parts. I really don't know much about bikes, but I use mine for commuting and have needed occasional repairs. I've been treated fairly and respectfully here. First walked in expecting them to look down on a clueless, non-hardcore bike commuter. Nothing of the sort. The man who helped me took time to show me, and explain, what all the parts were, what might be damaged on my bike, and how much it might cost to fix (depending on the problem, which they could not see without working on it). The bike was fixed same day, and the cost was right in the ballpark estimated. I highly recommend this shop. Close to campus and right downtown, so you can easily pick your bike up after work/school. read more

This is a great bike store with very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. I lived in State College for a year and rode my bike to work most days, which was a new endeavor for me. They outfitted me with everything I needed, explaining various features and gear with expertise. Their service turn-around is pretty quick and reasonable. If you buy your bike at the store, you will get a discount for everything else you buy (not just at the first visit, either). The prices are reasonable and though you may be able to find things cheaper online, the extra knowledge to help you make an informed decision is well worth the price. This is a great shop, a great downtown State College store - a true destination for many, and a place where the staff is 100% passionate about what they are doing. Everyone who works at this store knows what is up with bikes. They say tongue in cheek that the store is closed on Sundays so the guys can go out biking - but they do. I knew little about bikes when I wandered into their old location (up the steps in Calder Alley) to buy a bike - something for exercise and to zip around on for "excrements and giggles." I have since upgraded / tweaked that bike a few times at Freeze Thaw and love the daylights out of riding it to this day (literally). I never was a "bike person" before these guys. The amount of enjoyment I get out of my bike (a lot) is tied to the set-up, component choices and maintenance the team at Freeze Thaw have given me. Because they are passionate about bikes, they guide you very well and are mindful of value. And because they are nice and the store is a really cool space - bikes hanging from the high ceiling, frames popping out of walls, other bikes to discover in the loft - I want to linger in there. That's part of what is making me a geek - direct result of this store. They can often accommodate you quickly and do things while you wait, so exploring the store is an event. The well curated lines make the place fun to wander. Awesome accessories and bike stuff - smart, cool, sometimes hilarious gear. If you want a carrier for your beer growler, this is the place you will find it. Bike bells from goofy to old school to great design... I'm making myself not even look at the $200 Brooks saddles - they let you borrow one and demo it, because - not unlike a crack dealer - they know you will be back for it later. They remind you that you have a 15% discount if you bought a bike there - and they remember you (not because they punched it into a computer). I forgot and they could have taken me but didn't. THAT is special and you do not see that everyday. Try that at a national retailer. Oh, and all of them - really good guys, very cool people. Nice. Approachable. Not snooty. Hipster / complete Bike Geeks minus the attitude. I love that my town has this store. There are a few good places to get bikes in State College, but this place is very special - elite level special. read more

Whenever I have a problem with my bikes they fix it in a timely manner and with a smile. The fees are reasonable as they are associated with manual labor. For me they fulfill their mission according to expectation and are hard workers. For anything bike related you ought to pay them a visit. read more

I like all of the bike shops in town. But if you need really expert Mtb maintenance this is the place to go. ( They have the maintenance area right in plain view... just like a restaurant where you can see the cooks cooking, it is slways a good sign!) Staff is friendly and prices are very fair. read more

Went to get my bike looked at because the chain was skipping. Employee told me that it cost $200 to repair the bike. So I took my bike to The Bicycle Shop on College and they did the repair for free because it was so minor. They basically straightened out the part. Beware of over pricing at Freeze Thaw Cycles. read more

Not a very child friendly bike shop. They sell children's bikes, but the salesperson was very rude and not very tolerant of my questions.
