My gastronomic tour of Spain up to this point was a great one. Many grand restaurants, a shitload…read moreof Michelin stars, a great number of tapas/pintxos, an unbelievable amount of delicious food. Now there is nothing special about Bar Los Arcos to the naked eye. It is special because this is the neighborhood joint that my friend frequents, where he grew up, where I got many a story of his upbringing. It is special because he describes it as the purest expression of Spanish cooking for the everyday person. You will not ever find a Michelin inspector here. It belongs to the residents. It is where we see the neighborhood old guy that dresses up in his military uniform and says high to everyone he sees. The schoolkids hang out here. It is a community place and we sit outside amongst the locals. If I didn't know better, we'd probably get beaten up if not chaperoned by my friend. Comidas caseras, tapas, platos combinados, bocadillos, cenas, postres, paella valenciana, caldereta de pescado, caracoles...are amongst the variety of things you can get here in this tiny hole in the wall. I enjoy my jamon and various spread of tapas that come in waves. It is truly a pleasure to sit thousands of miles from my own home, in the middle of my friend's hometown, as if I lived here myself. Even if it were for only a few fleeting moments.

We found it because it was the place that opened up the earliest for dinner (9:30pm), and what a gem we found! We ordered the menu that was inclusive of appetizers, salted steak, desserts, and wine. My mouth waters thinking about the food here 13 years later! The atmosphere was amazing. It looks like nothing from the outside, as it's in an industrial area, but inside you are transported to old world Spain (in my mind). It is a DO NOT miss place.

He did not speak English but informed us that both English and Spanish were stated on the menu. Warning: this restaurant wants you to enjoy and relax while eating lunch... If you would like your food to be served faster, tell them. We started with the grilled octopus (Galicia style). This octopus was served with the skin on, much fattier than usual but quite tasty! The octopus was served with spices on top, on a bed of potatoes and olive oil. Next we had scallops... The scallops were doused in diced onions and spices.. It was an unpleasant surprise to find that the chewy part of the scallop was still intact. I ended up leaving the table right after to go floss my teeth in the restroom. The rest of the scallop was cooked just right and had the right amount of flavor. As entrées, we order the tuna tataki and sea bass (the sea bass was not on the menu - a special order). The tuna tataki was quite different than the usual... It was cut much thicker and grilled a little more (very heavy). It also had a darker shade than the pink to dark pink norm. The sea bass was amazing (served with two sauces - one yogurt, the other a sweeter soy). I preferred the sea bass to the tuna tataki as it was much lighter and flaky. For dessert we ordered the chocolate cake. Loved it. Just the right amount of sweetness to end my lunch! I would have given 5*s... But the fact I had to go floss my teeth right after having the scallops was very unpleasant. I would give this place 4.5/5. Keep up the good work!

Paella! Our group of four was so excited to try paella here in Valencia because (1) none of us had…read moreeaten it before, and (2) what better place to try it than at in Valencia, its birthplace? I'm glad to have gotten it out of the way because I don't see myself eating it again for a very long time. It's not that the food was bad, but it's a lot. We shared the seafood paella and the traditional paella. I mostly had the seafood paella but I did try a few bites of the traditional one with rabbit and escargot. The seafood was fresh, and there was a healthy amount of prawns and squid. If you're not really into seafood or can't stand too much of the aroma or essence of seafood, do NOT get it because it is strong. After a while I got sick of the seafood flavor, which isn't a knock on the food, but a lesson that paella simply needs to be complemented with other foods. The traditional paella was quite good as well, and neither had rice that was too burnt (which I liked). I also didn't think the escargot and rabbit were particularly special. Again, portions were tremendous and I think we all left very, very full. Keep in mind that you need at least two people ordering paella in order to get it. It runs at about 18€ per person for any paella, which isn't on the low end, but you do get filled up since it's all rice.

They are served family style which I do particularly enjoy. It is a little expensive but the food is good and it is in a convenient location. There wine selection is also pretty good in my opinion, I do know they have some local options.
