I stayed here for a quick 2 day trip to Miami. The location is close to the beach and away from the crowds of south beach. The building is old and the rooms are not well maintained. You aren't offered a lock for the locker in the communal bunk rooms. The air conditioner is very load and does nothing to prevent the moisture in the room. Sharing a small bathroom that is in unit with 3 others is a nightmare. There are bugs in the bunks! And this is not a quiet hostel by any means there is an onsite restaurant/bar that blasts music until way past midnight. I will not recommend this place to anyone that actually values cleanliness and relaxation. read more

Stayed there several times over the past decade, and absolutely loved the place. Fantastic deal for traveling on a budget, saving your $$ for actual sightseeing instead of blowing it on overpriced hotels in the area, which can cost THOUSANDS ... Well, no more. Some asshole company bought them out, 'upgraded' the place, and now charges, you guessed it right, hundreds and even thousands for a so called 'luxury hostel'. As the gentrification and out of control profiteering reaches endgame levels, every last motel, hostel, BnB and trailer park these greedy motherfuckers can get their hands on is being flipped for profit, and FreeHand is no exception. Found this place on AirBnB since many hotels advertise in that platform now. This is one of those art deco Miami hotels transformed into a boutique hotel. The ambiance is fabulous, the Guesthouse king was spacious with a very comfortable bed. Please look for Emma at the award winning "The Broken Shaker" bar and she is an amazing mixologist. She'll treat you like a regular that has visited the bar for years. Tell her to make you and Emma, that Harry said so. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because there is no bar or any food service until 5 pm, forcing you to pickup your morning café latte one block away to enjoy it a the hotel pool. Great little hostel! I booked an all female quad! There was a lot of in and out of my dorm in all hours of the night which is notable only because this was my first hostel experience. The common area is decorated so nicely and it's like a jungle retreat with music, a bar and a restaurant! So many little lizards hanging around. The pool area is nice despite not getting to use it this time around. Air conditioner worked well! Only issue was my towel stayed damp and my bed sheets were a bit damp at time just from the humidity and poor ventilation. Not enough to truly matter especially for the great price! Loved the free bike rentals even though they were too busy to use this time! I'd stay here again. read more

Location is the only positive here. Went to check in at 4 pm took my ID and charged deposit. Person then walked off and I thought to go grab my room keys making small talk and joking with other coworkers. I proceeded to stand there for about 10 minutes when another employee noticed me and asked if I needed helped and I said I was trying to check in. The first employee said oh I am trying to find a house keeper for your room. This was 1 hour after check in was supposed to be. Room has equivalent of window units for ac. Rooms are supposed to be sound proof but you can hear everything outside in the courtyard. I thought this was a hotel but is basically a hostel and paying this much for it is not worth it at all. A hostel is a place you go without high expectations. I didn't have any trouble being here, but I do wish it was more clear what things were there for the guests like food, breakfast, etc. The room was clean enough, just enough space, and my roommates were fine to get along with for an evening. A horrible human will ruin anything nice! Alexandria I believe her name is - the manager - is that horrible disgusting being. The old Indian Creek hotel is a beautifully designed historic South Beach icon rebranded as Freehand. Upon arrival In my shared hostel I noticed the room was FREEZING and the other guys wore scarves and down jackets - in MIAMI! WTF? I politely asked if the temp could be brought down on the wall AC unit - it was set to 61 F! The other fellows said yes and I set it to 72 F and in a while the room felt comfortable + more moderate. The next morning Manager Alexandria burst in unannounced and uninvited and went straight for the AC unit. I believe the maid tipped her off the temp had been changed. I was livid and told her there was no way I was going to stay in a freezing room. I expressed to her that I would change the temp right back up when she left. Well the B pronounced me cancelled and called security and Miami Beach Police to escort me out. I have never been so outraged. NEVER EVER stay in this ridiculously managed piece of trash with $14 beers. A big phat F U to the manager Alexandria. May she rot! read more

Negative 500 stars! Beautiful location- HORRBLE customer service! I was in my room minding my own business when the manager burst in to put my AC back to sub zero temp. WTF? When I expressed my desire to keep it at a more moderate level, she canceled my reservation, called security and the cops and kicked me out. W T F? How dis they know I turned the AC to low? WHY is this an issue? WHO the gives them the right to BURST in on you like that? Booking.com gave me a full refund after I explain the situation. This woman is very lucky I exercised extreme levels of restraint to not escalate the situation. This woman violated my privacy, violated my respect, violated my right to not freeze to death, and violated my dignity by throwing me out on the street. The room was fully paid, and I was minding my own business. What the friggin hell? Do not stay here. This place is the most uptight place I've ever been to in my entire life and I have traveled the world it's a damn shame what they've done with the old Indian Creek hotel that used to be such a lovely beautiful cool Hang. read more

booked a stay at Freehand Miami through Expedia because they advertise as pet-friendly. I arrived with my service dog, fully prepared to show valid documentation, and was told I couldn't stay because I had a shared room. This violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against individuals with service animals--regardless of room type. I calmly asked for a refund, and a young Latina staff member assured me I could get one through Expedia. I left in good faith. Expedia tried to contact them for four days, but Freehand Miami refused to answer their phone or respond. Now they are denying my refund, after misleading me and rejecting a federally protected service animal. This was not only illegal, it was also incredibly unprofessional. I am contacting an attorney to pursue this matter further. If you are traveling with a service animal or expect basic professionalism--avoid Freehand Miami at all costs. read more

This is a review of the outdoor court yard for their event space and restaurant. I came here for an event and it was a huge space and vibe. They have a garden area where you can host dinners and fitness classes. I was here for both! I love how versatile the space is and the staff is accommodating and friendly. This hostile is overall nice and affordable. Loved the vibes and overall decor of this location. Within walking distance from the beach and food spots which I love. Staff was friendly as well. The room bed wise was clean but the tv remote and bathroom had small issues that were way to ignore. We also noticed bugs stuck in the window and a live roach was in the room. The limited random food selection and the bugs are the only reason why I am giving 4 star over 5. Would stay here again though. Upon arrival I noticed a dental pick on the floor and a dirty T-shirt in the closet. This a clear indication the room had not been adequately cleaned nor were COVID Protocols followed. I would not come here again because of the cleanliness issue and the false advertising on the website. I wiped all the hard surfaces down with bleach wipes (including the floors), and used Lysol on the soft surfaces before we unpacked. What they can improve immediately: Cleanliness Hire an exterminator Update the website so people can plan accordingly Sell ice and biodegradable coolers Send a text to people when they check in about WiFi, the bar, towel service, lack of laundry services, etc. The employees on the front end of the house are curt and not too helpful. We met one very friendly employee and helpful employee, Nathalie. They should hire more like her. FYI The kitchen is closed. Pathetic see through curtain between bunk beds in shared room with strangers provided no privacy whatsoever. Window in room facing loud busstreet didn't close and the curtain didn't even block the light from the street. Could hear talking from street level all night, and old windows let in warm air making room hot. Weird guy in room with me kept his bunk light on all night and listened to YouTube videos all night with no headphones while he slept in a room shared with others. This hotel looks nice, but is crawling with cockroaches. See photos of the giant cockroach in the hallway the size of my pinky. Also there was one in my room which scurried away too fast for me to take a picture. There's also a restaurant on the site which I definitely don't recommend considering there's giant cockroaches roaming the property. I have stayed plenty in Florida and this is the first time I've ever been in a place with cockroaches. I left immediately and tried to get my money back which I paid $262 and a $30 charge for resort fees. However the hotel was impossible to get hold of and hotel tonight who I booked through refuses to give me a refund. All together a pretty crummy experience for my layover in Miami. read more

At a quick glance, it's a cute place with decent reviews. At a closer look, the rooms are grimy and the whole hostel smells musty. We understand that it's a hostel and we can't expect hotel services but this place was borderline uninhabitable. We booked a whole room (4 bunks) to ourselves so we had a private room and bathroom. The room smelled muggy throughout our 2 night stay. The beds look clean but doubt that they actually thoroughly cleaned the side panels of the bed. The windows were covered with insects (luckily only on the outside) so we kept the shades closed. The bathroom is no different. Definitely bring shower shoes. The tub has cracks all over and anything metal inside the bathroom was rusty. It honestly gave me a flashback to crappy college dorms. There is a mix of different types of people staying at the hostel. You have your typical 20-somethings and then you got some older crowds. Definitely met some odd people but no one horrendous. Overall service was kinda shady. They have a professional front but inside it's all really cheap business. I paid in full at time of booking and then they charged me when I checked in for "resort fees". And after looking at my card statement, I saw I was charged twice for each of the "resort fees". Tried to contact them through the email they provided for billing but got no luck. Good thing my credit card has good protection and was able to credit me back. I would not come here again unless I'm SUPER desperate for a cheap stay. If you don't mind being a bit grimy then I guess this place is good. read more

Dear Hotel manager, I am writing with regard to my disappointment about an unpleasant stay at your hotel. I am afraid to say that I am absolutly dissatisfied with the hotel service. On July 25 I stayed for 2 nights. As a frequent traveler, I understand that not every hotel experience can be perfect, but the issues I encountered during my stay were unacceptable. problem #1 the toilet upon arrival was broken - I alerted the front desk, but it took a day to have somebody service and fix. problem #2 on 7/25 the music from downstairs stayed on until past 11pm - not ideal for people needing to sleep after coming in on a late flight. problem #3 presented the card for 25% discount for eating at "broken shaker" - and it was never applied even after telling the host that we were guests in the hotel multiple times. problem #4 the cleanness of the room - see attached picture of the towel that was left in our room. asked the front desk twice for new towels and none ever came. read more

Freehand Miami is a hostel that has more going for it in the actual location than anything else. The patio area is nice as is the lobby, but the rooms and plumbing are in dire need of an update/renovation. I have stayed here a few times now and in every room I have been in the water (either the sink or the toilet or both) leak/run and the drains in both of my showers have taken forever to drain, so when showering you will be standing in ankle-deep water in a matter of mins. Also, my lamps in the bunks have never worked during my stay. I reported this the last time to the front desk and nothing was done about it, so I had to resort to using the flashlight feature on my phone at night for the remainder of my 3-night stay. The front desk staff do not answer the phone, it just goes to a recording about "high call volume" which I found hard to believe at 1am when I wanted to confirm my reservation after a late arrival and was unable to. The beds are comfortable, but I wish they had a privacy curtain. Also, the comp breakfast is not really a "breakfast" so much as a couple of cereals, tiny muffins, and toast. They do offer cold brew from 10am-5pm in the lobby, but it was only available one time during my most recent stay. All in all, if you can get a cheap price here, it can be worth it for a couple of nights due to the location as it is close to a free trolley & bus stop and a couple blocks from the beach. But, if you are sensitive to noise, I would look elsewhere. read more

As soon as I walked into the Freehand Miami's patio, I thought to myself "I've been here before." Which can't be true, because this was my first trip to Miami. Then it hit me, this is a sister location to the Freehand in NYC, which was found purely by chance. And it was kismet once again in South Beach. You can use ALL of the adjectives to describe the Miami Freehand, it still wouldn't describe the nighttime vibes this place is putting off. Even if you are a guest of the hostel, reservations are recommended. Why? Because it's just that cool. But if you're not there to see or be seen, there's usually an available pool chair for which to sit and enjoy your beverage. Speaking of, get that punch! Whatever they're brewing up in a bowl, it likely tastes even better than it smells. Cocktails are beautiful, yet simple. Keeps the lines at the bar down to a minimum so you can enjoy your time outside people-watching. Very hip, very cool, everything one would expect from this budding brand. The pictures on the site are filtered and do not truly represent how the hotel is. The building is very old and smells like it. I had to unplug the ac in my room to use the outlet so I can charge my devices. the WiFi only works in the hallway or lobby. I found out the next day they the offer free breakfast, information I felt should have been given at check in. The staff were not well trained. Granted it is a cheap hotel, so I have to compromise but the following is ridiculous My email below was sent to through the website. I will update my review once I get a response. 3/31 I checked into your hotel and received a room key. That night I booked another reservation for one more day. The morning of 4/1 your front desk agent informed me that there was an issue with my payment. Throughout the night my card was ran 4 times each one pending in my bank account. I wasn't able to resolve the issue at that time. When I returned, I spoke to the front desk manager who tried to explain what happened. My biggest question is that if the card did not process how was I able to retrieve a key? Also, with all of my information on file why didn't anyone contact me? Still willing to pay, I expressed to the front desk manager that I am not on vacation and need these rooms until I can find an apartment.. pending transactions takes 3-4 business days to drop which is the money I need to book my rooms. She was kind enough to give me the room at no cost. When I retrieved my expensive travel pro luggage, the handle was broken but no one knows who handled the bag or how it happened. I get to my room which smells like mildew, the outlets in my bed do not work & the curtain between me in an all male dorm was missing. I ignored all of these issues because I have no energy to complain and just made it work. At 12:20am, I was woken out of my sleep to come downstairs and asked to pay for the room I was given. WHERE IS THE COMMUNICATION! I have to be to work early in the morning and I was interrupted for something that was already resolved. I am not on vacation.. I am basically homeless and need these rooms. I now do not have any money to book my rooms for this week until the pending charges drop. I am very dissatisfied with this hotel and the service. On top of everything the pool is closed. I have been trying to be understanding but these issues are no fault of mine. I have been staying at your sister hotel, the Generator for over a week and never ran into any issues. Unfortunately, they were sold out of rooms so I was referred to come here. I would like to say I would never stay here again and let everyone I speak to in Miami know about the issues I have been having and how much of an inconvenience your staff has caused me and never to book here! However, because of my situation I need to stay in this area and you are the only affordable, available one for me. This is the worse place I've ever stayed in. The rooms window were broken and it was freezing in the room. The beds have a white sheet and a small blanket that was not sufficient. The bathroom didn't even have a single outlet. We had booked two nights and the hotel refused to refund us the second night, we left after one night and the still charged us for the second night and the resort fee. We went to the lobby at 130am to get help and no one was present and the rooms have no phones for you to get help. Don't stay here, the worse and I'm disappointed they would charge us a second night. read more

I stayed in Freehand Chicago and I absolutely loved it! Charging a daily resort fee for a hostel but they don't even have enough towels in the building for everyone When I checked in there wasn't a towel on my bed. The front desk told me they didn't have any. Waited 24 hours after checking in before they were able to provide some basic linens. A couple days later one of my roommates used my towel (i know because 24 hours after my last shower my towel is hanging up but it's completely drenched and literally dripping wet). So I go to the front and ask for a new towel. They said in 5 minutes housekeeping would be up. I expressed my concern but alright I can wait I just need to start my day. Over an hour later I had to go back down and ask for towels again. At that point the pool towels up front had been restocked so I asked for one of those. The front desk argued that oh no that's not the towel you need we'll bring one up. At that point I was over waiting and did get a little rude and demanded I get a towel I can clearly see I don't understand why I'm paying for a room, paying all these extra fees including a resort fee, and they can't provide a towel so I can wash myself at the end of the day. Not a good first impression. Light by my bed didn't turn on and no one answered the phone nor returned my voicemail about getting it to work. Someone's fake eyelashes are about six inches from me on the wall, close to the light Plus the front entrance is blocked off due to construction. Said nothing to me when I made a reservation nor is there a sign saying where to enter. I really thought that at 8:30 PM, after 33 hours on Amtrak, I'd have to find another hotel with no WiFi access for my iPad to find another place. And the front desk lady is arguing with me because housekeeping cleaned the room and I said sheets are clean but eyelashes on the wall inches from my head is not acceptable and I don't care if housekeeping isn't here now. Someone with gloves is cleaning it now, not tomorrow. Update, perhaps because other guests were there and looking over our shoulders at the picture, she got a pair of gloves and took it off herself. Considering that housekeeping hasn't cleaned the bathroom in who knows how long, if I hadn't forced the issue, the eyelashes would still be here 36 hours later. Hallways are musty, minimal ventilation and are so unbelievably dark. This is June in Miami Beach. Invest in a fan at least and some lightbulbs more than 10 or 15 watts. read more

This was a great hostel which was conveniently located near the beach. I was pleasantly surprised and wanted to share all the juicy (sorry my social life is lacking at the moment) details from the stay! Upon arriving, you will see the check in counter to the left, a coffee stand to the right and a cool perfectly decorated social area in the middle. We arrived extremely early so we were not able to check in yet but they were nice enough to direct us to a restroom to get changed and also stored our luggage for us in the secured area in the back office. This was all great however when we arrived later to check in... we got to our room and there was a man there. This normally wouldn't be an issue except we reserved beds in a female quad room. We were not able to get into a female room the first night but Iris at the front desk was very apologetic and was able to get us into a female room for the next night. It ended up turning out that the guy was super laid back and quiet so we never moved rooms. (Sorry Iris for being such pains then not moving!!) One thing you definitely couldn't help but notice was all of the outside people coming to visit the Broken Shaker. We aren't talking a "regular hostel bar" this bar serves up some seriously good drinks and the atmosphere is almost impossible to describe. Think cool hip people, best drinks ever, and a garden courtyard. Sounds crazy for a hostel right?! The quad room was comfy but a little warm because someone kept turning off the AC. There were small lockers (bring your own lock) and some shelves. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a restroom for the quad room which was great! Oh AND it was clean! Matter of fact everything was clean and the linens were crispy white. You can rent beach towels. We had to pay a $5 deposit since we rented towels the day of check out. We got our deposit back with no issues. I saw that you can rent/ borrow bikes however I did not use this service. Overall, this is a great option for quick (or longer) stays in Miami with convenient access to everything you need! read more

Stayed here early December and loved it. Had a private room and bath with king bed. It was cute, the decor was charming throughout the entire place, we got free towel and umbrella rental, and there was a fire dancer by the pool one night. It can get loud as the courtyard is packed with people at night but they close at midnight so it's not too bad. Appreciated the location, a couple blocks from the beach. I was thankful to not have stayed in SouthBeach because it was too hectic down there - the part of the island where Freehand is, is way more chill. Bike rental is free at the hostel too. Nice bike path that goes up and down along the beach. Would definitely stay here again, exceeded my expectations after having read all the reviews on here. I suppose the dorm rooms would have been pretty awful - but for obvious reasons. Lot of digital nomads in the lobby on their laptops. read more

Maybe At one time this was a 'Spot' but like much of Miami this place is run Down basic and tired. Without a microwave within Miles there is no alternative But to throw out your Leftovers. Which cost me Greatly during my stay. It seems all that matters Here is the $25 drinks and the $75 ribeye steak or the $24 chicken wings and fries. Or the private Party booked by the pool Or the reserved tables leaving Hotel guests to a certain row Of red chairs inconveniently Placed in a walkway so as your Feet are trounced by drunk Yuppies. Or challenged millennials. The only plus is location. Two Blocks from the beach and a Bus ride to anywhere desirable. But beware of the homeless Wanderers and Vagrants who Are in your constant presence Whilst Everywhere in Miami. The Downtown was so Scary Eery and Downright frightening I felt as if it were a real life Horror Show. But back to this current review, Current being the operative Word. And the direction this Establishment should strive for. DO NOT STAY HERE! I have been a loyal freehand customer for years, often frequenting the LA location then also staying at the Chicago one. I was so excited to stay at the original. It was shockingly run down and didn't seem at all like the other locations. Lobby was filthy, service was terrible. Person running the front desk joked about having COVID symptoms and didn't wear a mask. I could really go on and on, but trust me it was gross. THEN!! Almost a week after I left there were two charges that were charged to my credit card that amounted to 2k and I can't seem to get anyone to care at all! Is it not concerning that someone employed there seems to have run fraudulent charges while I was out of the state? I am in utter shock. Some of the worst service I have received in my entire life.
