This event is in my top 3 coolest experiences in Cleveland -- and throwing epic events is a big part of what I do for a living!
Carol & John's Comic Shop didn't invent Free Comic Book Day, but they pretty much did in the Cleveland-area. The event is technically the first Saturday in May every year, but they start the celebrations on Friday evening.
Comic book fans start lining up outside the shop in the wee morning hours on Friday and the line of people just builds from there as the day goes on. We got there at 6PM, set up chairs and had some dinner at the restaurant next door. By that time we were like 50th in line. From there it's like a WAY cooler, more respectful and geekier tailgate, with cosplayers! Everyone brings games, folding tables, snacks and people come dresses in geek attire or full-on costumes. There's conversations with like-minded folks, beers inside Carol & Johns (free!) and later on in the evening, they open up to let you meet artists, get free sketches and buy prints/art. No one fights, argues or gets so wasted they can't handle themselves... it's just FUN! You can go inside the shop and stock up on comics to read while you wait, but we didn't bother with any of the activities we brought. We had way too much fun snapping photos with folks, chatting, playing games and hanging out.
Then, at midnight -- when the line is like down the damn street -- a countdown starts like it's NYE and they open the doors! Every person is allowed 10 books of their choosing, plus there are extra graphic novels for the first so-many people! There are two lines once you get inside, so it moves really quickly.
The next day is more family-friendly, but still really fun! They have live mural painting, artists (again) doing free sketches, art and prints for sale, toys and games out for kids, photo booths, rocket rides, more free books--all the fun! We came back on Saturday because we just couldn't stay away!
I'm realizing it's way too hard to put into words how epic this event was to me. You'll just have to go yourself next year to find out. read more
