Treatment hasn't even started yet, but the care from first phone call to now scheduling surgery has been phenomenal! I spoke to a patient navigator (so kind and so helpful) for a second opinion appointment. They did some rescheduling in a timely manner to get every doctor to come in back to back. This was scheduled for 5 hours. It sounds grueling but it was great! They have food available on site; a clean facility and doctors who walk in prepared and who truly care. Incredibly, they threw in two extra compared to a rural cancer center: a speech therapist and a surgeon. The hypopharnyx cancer my dad has is not recommended to have surgery BUT the doctor explained that it's good to meet so she and her team are available if other surgical interventions need to quickly come into play at some point even though the risk is low. That's amazing! The speech therapist was also surprising, once we met with each specialist, it was clear this is a well run, organized and thoughtful center for the best care possible. They asked really good questions, let us ask ours and we never felt rushed. They explain in detail what is to come and it was reassuring that they are specialists rather than generalists in their department. They work with you to support you during side effects, to find housing and transportation, they have a phone number to call for everything you might need. They are clear in communication from everything phone call and have been well mannered with common sense at every interaction. They really have everything you need and partner with the best medical school - university of Washington. Do note, you can end up working with residents so I am anticipating that popping up at some point. I am looking forward to my dad receiving his treatments here and know they are working hard to get everything complete and start up as soon as possible. Thank you Fred Hutch! I will return with an update as treatment gets underway. I hope to stay impressed along this journey. read more

10/27/26 Update: FHCC email system is also total trash. You send a message on a system that looks like it's from 1997 and have NO IDEA if the email was sent because there's no copy of it to see. Also, if you want to message with the patient relations department, they don't use a secure system, they email you to your personal email account and that's your only option. How they get away with this with HIPPA laws, I do not know. I am beyond annoyed at this hospital. I have no idea how they continue to remain affiliated with the University of Washington when they are so incompetent. --Fred Hutch is total garbage especially their patient relations department. I spent a half an hour on the phone with them just to move doctors, that wouldn't have required such a lengthy phone call at any other hospital or medical center I've ever been to. And the reason for my transfer is because their location at Overlake can't get a stick on my vein, so I have no choice but to transfer. It's a 2-3 week process to just to see if you are "approved" and that doesn't include the appointment. Why do you need to go through an approval process when the problem is them??? The incompetent individual I spoke to on the phone couldn't tell me if there are other doctors at the facility I was at, even though I asked her about FOUR times and then she read me some (worse than corporate) spiel that they can't guarantee a transfer is going to be approved. I asked this incompetent individual, "well then what happens," and of course she doesn't know. I happen to unfortunately know the head of this department personally from many years ago and although I believe she means well, I know for a fact what an awful worker she is as an employee and I'm not surprised she found a perfect home in a highly dysfunctional and backwards organization. Since FH has a monopoly on almost every hematologist department in the Seattle area, I'm not left with many options, which is bloody infuriating. I'm going to try Swedish (also not great) and Virginia Mason who I have no experience with but hate the location, to find something better and pray that I never get cancer ever but especially in Seattle because this medical center and their bottom of the barrel employees are GARBAGE. Have a nice day! read more

I had a frustrating experience with the receptionist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Tanya came across as very mechanical on the phone, repeatedly asking the same questions even after I had already provided the information. Despite giving my phone number three times, she was unable to enter it correctly, which was concerning. Furthermore, she asked me to register one more time bc she was unable to locate my file due to her own inability to enter the number correctly. The interaction became more difficult when she started arguing instead of helping move the process forward. When I suggested she look up my physician's name, she told me to call back later with spelling of the name which would require me to wait in the queue one more time. She refused assisting me at that point, and was arguing with me so I had to ask her to stop so we could simply complete the registration and not waste more time. I understand that large hospital systems can sometimes struggle with customer service consistency, but this level of inefficiency and lack of professionalism was disappointing. I hope additional training can help improve patient experience moving forward. read more

My experience with Seattle Fred Hutchinson radiation therapy was dreadful. My breast cancer radiation treatment required me to hold my breath for various amounts of time, and they never told me exactly how long. The therapists had me hold my breath for up to 30 seconds and did not give me any time in between breath holding to recover, so I had a difficult time catching my breath. I spoke to them about my experience to request longer recovery time in between breath holding episodes and requested to also speak to the doctor about it. They then told me moving forward the longest breath holding requirement would be no longer than 10 seconds. All of the therapists began to treat me differently after I voiced my concerns. Different therapists had me hold my breath for over 10 seconds on several instances. The breaks in between breath holding were no longer articulated, leaving me panting in between sessions on my own with no direction that it was the appropriate time to take a break. A couple therapists appeared to laugh at me while walking by with no apparent reason. A nurse would be standing at the treatment room exit blatantly glaring at me every other day. The made my experience extremely stressful and made me feel like I cannot voice any complaints or requests to be treated with simple human decency in a time where I need to feel supported amidst a serious health crisis from my care team. I warn any future patients be prepared to be thoroughly disappointed at the vindictiveness and lack of professionalism in the Seattle Fred Hutchinson radiation therapy staff. read more

I was treated for cancer in 2021 when they were still Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and received wonderful care. I've been doing follow up appointments ever since. Patient care has unfortunately worsened since they became Fred Hutch. Several appointments have been scheduled, rescheduled, and canceled without notifying me. I reached out to Patient Relations via email to express my concerns. A full two weeks later, I got an AI-bot reply. I can't speak to how they're supporting patients going through active treatment, but for patients in recovery they're falling pretty short. read more

Didn't happen to me, but it did happen to someone I know with recently diagnosed cancer. This patient showed up for a port placement, and when they arrived, they were told their appointment was canceled, no explanation given. No service recovery, no "how can we make this better", just we're sorry that your cancer care is delayed due to our incompetence. I'm assuming they do very good research here but get your care elsewhere probably. This is absolutely atrocious. read more

The 2 stars are for all the WONDERFUL people at the infusion center in Seattle. If not for them it would be 1. Need regular infusions to not become anemic and die and the first couple months were fine. Find out something important I needed to inform them about and felt a 5 minute zoom call would get across what texting them wasn't and was basically told without being told by the ARNP (I never met "my doctor") that I was assigned that it was a waste of their time and needed to stick to MyChart. Wasn't happy but they're busy, I'm not at immediate risk so... Okay. That was in June or July when they scheduled me for a bunch of infusions to then do labs and see where things were at and how to go forward in September. And they did. But since September I've heard nothing. I had to send them a note to remind them I had an infusion they wanted coming up in October and no response except a scheduling call that was panicked and last minute on their end and get my October labs and infusion. No messages about the lab results or their plans going forward. No calls from scheduling. No infusion this month because I'm not their babysitter and it's clear they don't care. I'm sure reminders pop up in their system. So if you're really sick maybe you'll get adequate care and not be ghosted for 2 months and have to take over their scheduling reminders for them and if you end up in the infusion center you'll be treated really well. But honestly I wouldn't take the chance. read more

Slow. Plodding. Nothing is rushed. My best was dying from Pancreatic Cancer and appointments to get biopsies and make decisions based on them took months. The results revealed little, so more tests more delays, more months. They have to be absolutely 100% sure you won't negatively impact their statistics before they try anything but Chemo. Meanwhile the cancer metastasizes. This place just didn't seem to take the seriousness of the situation into consideration when building a timeline of treatment. Too slow. She died. read more

Beware of the dangerous parking garages mismanaged by Fred Hutch at Lake Union. While at my cancer treatment appointment, my parked car suffered a $3,000 hit and run collision. Security camera footage identifies the vehicle and its license plate, and there was an eyewitness, yet Fred Hutch required me to file a claim with my insurance company and pay the $300 deductible. Over a two-month period, they lied about what they said they would do and, in the end, they did nothing as advised by their legal department. Shame! read more

Great cancer care. Radiation. Follow up. Doctors, nurses , techs. Friendly staff. Especially Lorna Mackinnin and Dr Liao.

Be warned- patient care coordinators should not be trusted. Here we go again- Fred Hutch must be scrapping the bottom of the barrel when they hire patient care coordinators and front desk receptionist. Long story short, when my dad had a treatment appointment the patient care coordinator told me on the phone, "have him here at 8:00am. Even though his appointment is for 11:30, he needs to be here at 8:00am for pre procedure work. First mistake- I believed her and trusted what she was telling me. She finished the call by saying, "call me with any questions ". I called twice, no answer, just left VM and no reply. Well day of appointment comes, bright and early at 8:00am and guess what- no, it appears that he DIDN'T need to be there at 8:00am!! A front receptionist spat out, "why are you here so ungodly early"? Explained why and her excuse was she can't see all appointment details so she doesn't know. OK so now we sit around until 11:30? Love getting up at 6:00 in the pouring rain, to fight the morning traffic for nothing. A side note- the receptionist in a volume that everyone waiting in the waiting room could hear proceeded to talk about her bleeding gums, and how she and others like to goof off at work. Full arm tattoos and an over all appearance of being unkept. Wow- does Fred Hutch have a basic dress code? read more

My wife had pancreatic cancer. Fred Hutch put her on chemo and did multiple laparoscopies for a year. Early on they could not find any cancer spread. At that time we begged for surgery and radiation but they always refused because their results were indeterminate. They waited and waited until it was way too late to do anything. After the cancer had metastasized the oncologist admitted that their last biopsy was a fail, they did not take a big enough sample. They had no trials or anything else to offer her. They told us to go elsewhere. After that we tried MDAnderson and City of Hope, but they told us it was too late. I feel that had we went to a quality hospital first her chances would have been astronomically better. read more

The staff is ok but - for oncology, you have to check in and out all day - vital stats in the lobby, then get into a room, then back to lobby and check in, go to another room and then have to go back to lobby and check in and then into another room. The patients are laying on couches in the hallway. Today, waited an hour past the time for a CT. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! It sent us a more than $7000 bill for a one time blood test! There is no cost estimate provided before that $7000 blood test. I was beginning to lose faith in the medical system. Everyone I meet here is warm and caring and knowledgeable. I get time with my doctors. I never wait long. I can reach people after hours, even on weekends. Everyone works cooperatively. You see a different specialist and they've read your file. My only complaint is the listed address. Your uber driver wants to pick you up on Fairview but you are on Aloha. You might have to give directions so they let you off at the right place. I actually enjoy my visits here. read more

A name change to SCCA to get rid of bad press didn't help much. I began treatment first it was delay insurance coverage because they were using the wrong one, never a problem for the past 10 years. Then they used a 5 month , 5 pound heavier weight for dosing instead of an accurate weight. Because they didn't order all the labs I needed as I was ready to get my infusion I had to wait in the overcrowded lab an hour delaying my treatment and get stuck again. Nobody takes responsibility for all these mistakes just blames the other department or person. You'll never see a doctor just these hapless disorganized group of employees trying to fix all the mistakes that shouldn't have happened in the first place! Annual at OVERLAKE Bellevue is a trap when they refer YOUR CASE TO FRED HUTCH, I had a terrible experience at the Overlake Hospital (and Fred Hutch inside Overlake in Bellevue) for an annual check done on December 9,2022.What happens is when you reach the hospital they make you sign these papers with fine terms on the registration form as a to tactic to make patients agree to terms (deceitfully should be the word, but I will keep this more cordial). In my case,It is very clear from the documentation that the hospital made a mistake for last 3 years, in processing the sample and this was also the reason shared by the doctor verbally and in her notes as a possible reason for the unexpected results of platelet count. Instead of taking Ownership for not storing the sample properly, I was recommended to go for another type of test. I was assured that to eliminate the doubt they would like to do Same CBC test again in a different process, and only if the results were as indicative as in the test, that further tests would be conducted. The doctor at Overlake Fred Hutch verbally stated and documented that the CBC test results were likely because of delays in the Hospital to process my sample. I innocently agreed to the additional test in case My CBC test came low, hoping that the doctor's advice was in my interest, and if they did any additional tests on my sample they would keep me informed and seek my consent before proceeding.Overlake Hospital did not at this stage tell me that the second test would be at Fred Hutch, only a day before my appointment when I called I was informed.Additionally neither anyone at Overlake Bellevue nor Fred Hutch bothered to share with me the estimated cost for this test at Fred Hutch. For the second test done at Fred Hutch on February 28,2023.  I received my first shock on this trap, not through Fred Hutch or Overlake, but when my Insurance provider sent me a courtesy statement on May 1, 2023 a $1,903.40 claim posted by Fred Hutch. My immediate reaction was to speak with Overlake where all this started, however after days of trying to reach someone I figured this was something maybe Fred Hutch could provide me context. Reaching someone in Fred Hutch was equally painful, and after days of trying, I spoke with a person who identified themselves as Keyla C.  This person would not give me their last name /email or any other contact information.Keyla C. told me that at this stage I did not have to pay anything as the case was still in billing, and she was surprised on why the Insurance provider had sent me that statement. A month later July 23,2023 I received another statement from Fred Hutch  $2,322.00, and this time the total amount claimed by Fred Hutch was even higher. Sensing something was not right I started an email with the billing department at Fred Hutch.I was shocked that the hospital even once did not keep me informed how they were secretly conducting several tests on my blood sample, even the CBC test conducted at Overlake Fred Hutch was normal, and nor did they feel important to keep me informed of a big value charge (shock billing) each of these tests were adding towards. I felt Overlake Bellevue and Fred Hutch not only caused me mental agony, inconvenience, and anxiety for a blood sample they did not store correctly, but added misery by asking me to pay exorbitant charges, and making me feel like a lab experiment. After weeks of emails with the billing department Fred Hutch came back that they felt the documentation in the system justified the invoice charges, however they could only provide a half page summary for $ 2,322.00/- invoice, with tests as a recommendation by the doctor and never clearly discussed and agreed. read more

Wowza. Bon Appetit Catering (which has been handling the Red Brick Bistro for years) has taken over all the Hutch Campus cafeterias and coffee shops--and put their environmentally sustainable, yet classy (and i mean classy! visor dude is now in a chic black chef's hat, there is ikea-looking wood furniture shelves holding the potato chips, stainless steet basins holding all kindsa chichi salad accoutrements), touch on everything. Seriously, the salad bar is so sexy that it's enough to make me go vegetarian...for a meal. I waited awhile to make sure the novelty wore off...but the food definitely delivers. Variety and quality, and the price is actually not as bad as we feared it might be. One casualty though--the flower power cookies are no longer at the double helix cafe.
