This place is a tourist restaurant playing on its building. It is a traditional beer hall in a…read moreconverted indoor public swimming pool. Beer. Traditional salty, fatty German food. Mediocre. Marginal service. You now know all you need to know. If this is what you are looking for, then you are all set. If you are a foodie, then you should stay away (a long way away). I tried three beers - the Sommer brew, a Hella, and a Dunkel. The only good one was the Sommer brew. Obviously not available year round. The other beers were just okay. The other reviewer on Yelp said, "the pig knuckles were HUGE and worth ordering". NOT. At least not in my experience. They were just about burned, and very fatty. Size was big, but my German friends said that the portion I received was actually a little smaller than normal. Whatever. The little bit of lean meat in the knuckle has a strange off taste/smell. I did not eat more than two bites of it. Would definitely not order it again. The cold slaw it came with was edible, but nothing extraordinary. I tried the Abgergräunter Leberkäse mit Spiegelei. This is basically fried spam with an egg on top. Okay - it may not sound that appetizing, but it actually was pretty good. I would have this again. A friend got the Flammkuchen, which looked like a white-cheese pizza with pieces of ham and tomato on it. Think of the very thin Italian crust pizzas you sometimes encounter. This was like that, but with an even thinner crust. And instead of cheese, the white sauce is some sort of dairy product, but not cheese. It was pretty good also. I went with a group, and the waiter was just barely okay. The service was passable, but he insisted on making uncomplimentary remarks about those of us who were non-German to our German colleague. All about stupid tourists. It seems that this person probably should have had a different job, except that I have run into this attitude in Germany before. I tend to ignore it, but it definitely makes the experience unpleasant. In fact, I just changed from a two-star rating to a one-star rating because of the attitude of the waiter. If you are going run a tourist-oriented restaurant, you really should hire staff that are willing to deal with tourists. Although I must say that our group were not tourists - we were a group of business professionals from all over the world - Japan, the U.K., France, the U.S., etc. Oh well - old prejudices die hard, and some never learn the lessons of history. So all in all, I would stay away from this place. I definitely will never go back. Oh - and one more thing. They DO NOT accept credit cards. Only cash and LOCAL debit cards. This seems to be fairly universal in Wuppertal.

Good beer, good food and worth a visit (even ifonly once)…read more Got invited there by some colleagues overseas. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was the wood flooring and the steps taking you to a dining area with raised walls that are about 3-4 ft. deep. My host explained that this was once the town's natatorium (swimming pool) from the early 20th century that got converted to a brewery. There were galleries that overlooked this main level. Supsended from the ceiling were two huge figures in old-fashioned black and white bathing suits wimming. Climbing up to one of the galleries, there were tables against the overlooks and in recessed alcoves. It was definitely a casual place. I ordered the wheat beer while my other colleagues ordered the darker barley beer. Both tasted really nice and smooth. The portions were large--the pig knuckles were HUGE and worth ordering--I would split it and comes with the German equivalent of cole slaw. The pig knuckle was roasted so the skin was extremely crisp and crunchy, not fatty at all. The meat was nicely roasted. The other memorable dishes were the white asparagus and strudel, asparagus with salmon. Re: cost, I don't remember as my overseas colleagues treated us to the dinner. Worth visiting again, when in the vicinity od Dusseldorf or Cologne.

Oh what a dreadful disappointment. I've heard soooo much…read moreabout this place that when a friend of mine invited a group of us to try out their All You Can Eat BBQ Ribs I jumped at the chance! First of all - The Good Bits! (it's a short list, don't worry)! Location - Very close to the Borbeck railway station Room - Lots inside and a huge beer garden. Great for big groups of people.. office get-togethers etc. THE BEER - This IS the best thing about this place. You must try the Bock beer!!! Very good! but be careful. It's very strong!! Now to the more negative points It was a beautiful evening, so we sat outside and tried to order - I'm sorry came the unexpected answer,You have to eat inside!!!! ok so we all trooped inside and ordered. The food was edible. A huge disappointment. I'm only taking about the special offer not the menu - some people in our group - 10 of us - had the salad and I was told it was excellent. Full marks for this, but the ribs we ordered 6 and only got 5 - It had never seen a BBQ - and was undercooked, not raw but.. There is more.. After the meal we all went back outside to enjoy the lovely evening and chose a table at the back of the beer garden that had tables big enough for the whole group. This is when it all became a farce. We tried to order beer but the waiter wouldn't serve us as we were to far away!!!!!!! We had to go it to the bar and get our own!!!!!!! Disgraceful !!!!!!!!!!! It totally ruined what could have been a wonderful evening but was spoilt by the incompetent, inflexible staff. I won't be eating here again. Shame really.. the beer is sooooo good.
