I'm not a big fan of classic rock, if only because as a child it was A) endlessly poured into my…read moreeardrums, B) I grew up in a city with a great local music scene, and C) now that Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have made the list of "classic rockers", I'm officially Old and grumpy. That said, I've listened to KIOT plenty, especially at my favorite laundromat when I was in grad school. Unlike the sensationalized, over-the-top stations I grew up with (and 94 Rock here), KIOT's format is a great mix of obvious classics and plenty of deeper, longer tracks. You'll find some of the lesser-played Hendrix and Stones on this station, with fewer commercial breaks and DJs that generally keep it cool. Speaking of DJs, Erika Viking is the star of the morning show, and the day for that matter. She mixes up smart, hilarious content with personal commentary that seriously connects her with the audience, a rare trait for a host, and her guests are usually pretty entertaining, to boot. For a commercial station in ABQ, this is a solid choice.

For years, this neighbor of KUNM has been pumping out the Spanish muzic jamz with abandon, and I mean, they just can't/won't/don't stop. My neighbor, a big Al Hurricane fan, makes this station her life soundtrack. If you enjoy hollering Volver, roll up your windows and turn up this station. All you really need to know: From 4am-noon, every weekday, they broadcast a good selection of NPR news and affiliated shows. After that, it's New Mexican all the way. Saturdays are the opposite, with NPR in the afternoon, and this station is a good Sunday option if you want something informative and fun, most of the day is interesting. So if you're down with Julión Álvarez Y Su Norteño Banda, tune in, and if you're looking for public programming, try tuning into the sister station on the other end of the dial, 107.5 FM.

It sounds like a public access station with preachers and cheesy local ads... but it isn't. There are great shows like: Humankind- David Freudberg interviews visionaries. Writer's Almanac- This is Garrison Keillor's underrated show. He talks about writers, writing, reads poetry. Native American&Spanish music Car Talk- Yes, the Car Talk guys hail from Cambridge, Massachusetts, but this a fun automotive show! Thistle&Shamrock- Celtic music There's great variety, unlike most public radio stations nowadays. It's educational and fun!

uPUBLIC has multiple locations around the downtown area and the 907 address is just one. Actually…read morethat is their main office and audio studio. Across the street at 912 is their main production studio and on Central is another office. I went to all three offices today as a part of an orientation to become a uPUBLICAN which is what they call their members. They also have another location which is their prop warehouse, supposedly the most props of anywhere in the state. It is also being set up to produce a reality TV show. All of the locations had great people, facilities, and some great equipment. While at the Central Avenue location I added the spot to Yelp so hopefully that location will show up soon. uPUBLIC produces the content for ABQ cable channels 26 and 27. 26 is going to become exclusive sports and the other non-sports content on 26 will be migrated to channel 27. uPUBLIC is going through a metamorphisis and the orientation today for both old and new members was an introduction to how the intend to do things from here on out. A tour of the facilities was given as well as a talk by all the various department heads. After this we will begin taking classes on a variety of topics and hands on learning the use of the sound and video equipment. We are being prepared to produce our own show content, or if we wish, to assist, shoot video, edit, etc.

The stars are there, on the ground as you enter the building, and within you'll find a busy hive of peeps who are working to change the vibe of the 505. Come as you are. The coffee is already brewed. From what I understand, uPublic supports a wealth of cinema and local telecasts, The Morning Brew being the biggie, with local personality Larry Ahrens at the helm (and his contemporary, Erin Muffoletto, rocking the locally-known). The studio itself is pretty simplistic: one side typically features a tall table, the other a couch where Larry (grand as a skyscraper) looms over the guests and somehow makes them feel at home. There you are, sandwiched between two really great personalities that really have chemistry. And let's not forget Susan, Larry's wife, who watches each segment with abandon. My God Mother. (love KUNM too, and i love its music sometimes, but having a button i can turn to that has no annoying commercials and interesting thought provoking news is great! Its good to hear world opinions.

They play all the songs I like and I like that they play gospel on Sundays. It's down to earth with the current R n B music and of course the old school songs too. Their content is great and always positive. Excellent representation for urban Albuquerque! Love love love it!
