Stopped by Mad City Music while visiting Wisconsin and really enjoyed browsing their collection…read more They have a solid variety of vinyl records, both vintage albums and newer pressings of old favorites, with prices that seemed very reasonable. One thing I particularly appreciated was the handwritten sticky notes on certain records. They include information about the pressing year, rarity, and other interesting details about the album. As someone who enjoys hunting for older pressings and unique labels, this is incredibly helpful and something I wish more record stores would do. It makes browsing feel a little more like treasure hunting! They also have two turntable listening stations, which is a great feature, especially when the store gets busy and you want to check out a record before purchasing. The store itself is on the smaller side compared to some other record shops I've visited. There's still plenty to look through, but don't expect endless rows of vinyl. What surprised me was their CD selection, which seemed just as extensive as their records. They also carry a smaller collection of cassette tapes, so there's a little something for everyone. Overall, Mad City Music is a great stop for music collectors. Reasonable prices, an interesting mix of older and newer releases, and those informative sticky notes really make the experience stand out. Definitely worth checking out if you're hunting for something unique in Madison!

The prices are not bad and there are plenty of cheaper used options throughout, as well as more expensive special edition type items. The service was great, employees were friendly and the store is nicely organized.

Strictly Discs was easily one of my favorite stops while record hunting in Madison! From the…read moreoutside, you really wouldn't expect just how massive this place is. Head downstairs, and you're greeted by what feels like an underground museum of music, with row after row of vinyl records waiting to be explored. The selection is incredible, especially if you're looking for older pressings. Everything is nicely organized by genre and artist, making it surprisingly easy to navigate despite the sheer number of records. We spent a good amount of time digging through the bins and came across some absolute steals, including Jimi Hendrix, Earth, Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits Vol. 1, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. Finding classical records in good condition can be challenging, so that last one was particularly exciting! I also appreciated the variety beyond vinyl. They have an extensive CD collection, cassette tapes, and plenty of newer releases upstairs. The store has a lot of character, too, with wood accents, music memorabilia, and that classic independent record store atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time flipping through albums. The bargain bins are another highlight. There's something genuinely satisfying about finding a great album at a fraction of what you expected to pay. We walked away with several records in excellent condition and felt like we got some great deals. Overall, Strictly Discs is a fantastic destination for anyone who enjoys collecting music. Whether you're hunting for a specific pressing, looking for older classics, or just browsing to see what catches your eye, there's a tremendous amount to explore. I could have easily spent another few hours downstairs. Definitely a store I'll revisit whenever I'm back in Madison!

There's a lot of obscure experimental and electronic music as well as punk and indie. The location is amazing too, not far from the university on the near west side. Get a beer at Garth's to top off your digging adventure.
