To Whom it may concern:…read more Let's talk about women's healthcare. While on vacation across the country I needed access to emergency contraceptives. I called my medical practice, Family tree, at 4:35pm. The practice closes at 4:30pm. My call got forwarded to the On-Call doctor, Lauri Maitland. Doctor Maitland y refused to prescribe Plan B, and said that there were no other doctors available. Ethics of preventing a woman's access to proper healthcare aside, I called 5 minutes after the practice closed. Surely there must be another doctor available who could write a prescription given the severity of the situation. After I demanded to speak to another doctor for the THIRD time, she was, in fact, able to find another doctor who immediately prescribed me the medicine. Not only did Doctor Maitland try to shame me for my personal health choices, but she lied and intentionally tried to bar me from accessing medical attention from another doctor who was clearly available. These are the bare-bone facts of what happened. Now I will present to you my personal perception of my interaction with Dr. Maitland. I felt an intentional effort to shame me for my personal choices. I experienced alarming verbal unprofessionalism. I observed inappropriate doctor to patient communication. I perceived medical ignorance about women's health. After refusing to write me a prescription, she callously told me I should go to the emergency room or I could "wait 24 hours" until the practice was open again. Must I truly explain to a medical professional that Plan B's potential effectiveness decreases the longer you wait? Instead of remaining composed and professional, Dr. Maitland chose to engage in an altercation trying to justify her beliefs. Dr. Maitland told me that she "did not believe in contraceptives" and that she would not be able to write me a prescription. Why is this particularly dangerous language to use? If I was less self-assured and confident in my opinions about women's health, I would feel embarrassed for calling for the prescription. I would feel scared to call back. I would feel like there was something wrong with me for asking. I might be led to believe that it was "my fault" that a condom broke, or that safe, protected, and consensual sex is wrong or disgraceful. The last thing that a medical practice should do is to suggest to its patients, at a particularly vulnerable juncture, that there is something "wrong" with them or that they do not deserve fair and comprehensive treatment, especially if they claim to support women's health. After all, Concord Hospital, which services Family Tree Health Care, proudly states on its website that its "Women's Health Services provides comprehensive, specialized care [to] support you and your family". Furthermore, the Family Tree Health Care website states that it provides "gynecology contraceptive management". These are lofty and deceptive claims given that I was actually forced to argue with a member of the practice for them to complete the simplest task of writing a prescription for emergency contraceptive. These interactions were thoroughly disturbing as the denial of such medical attention has life-altering ramifications for me as a patient. I spent over an hour trying to gain access to a medicine that my health insurance covers and that is widely used throughout the United States. What is possibly more disturbing was my subsequent interactions with Kathy Miller, the Practice Manager of Family Tree. After having such a negative and upsetting experience, I decided to call the practice to talk to someone in the administration. I told Ms. Miller that it is unethical and irresponsible for a practice, especially a non-religiously affiliated practice, to employ a doctor "on-call" who is unwilling to prescribe birth control. I did not choose this doctor. I contacted the practice out of duress, and was forced to interact with this doctor. It is one thing to employ a doctor that refuses to prescribe birth control. It is another issue to make that doctor the only available doctor during "on-call hours". Like a true business woman, she tried to placate my complaints and anger by telling me that she talked to both doctors in the practice who refuse to prescribe birth control and told them that they needed to think about a "back-up" plan incase a patient requested some form of contraceptive in the future. She told me she was sorry that I had a negative interaction with a doctor, and a patient should never be made to feel ashamed for their choices. Well I call bullshit. (and no, my cussing does not invalidate my complaints or concerns as was patronizingly suggested by the administrative member). If Family Tree truly cared about providing the best possible health-care to women, they would not tolerate doctors whose views on women's health are not only 50 years antiquated, but are clearly at odds with the practice's mission. As our phone conversation concluded, I became increasingly frustrate
