Big Tex in New Mexico welcoming you to Fox Cave.

Quick pit stop to see this Fox Cave. It's more of a gift shop stop with a petting zoo and museum you can walk though (must purchase a tix). Good place for kids to run around a bit. Decided to pass on purchasing a museum tix, but still a cute, short walk through shop.

This place was a random stop for my family and I, but we were so happy we stopped in! It was such a unique place with so many things to see. The best part was the cave in the back of the store! Our family is still talking about how cool the place was.

    Ceiling of the "cave"

This place was better in theory than in person. The "cave" is really just an alcove with a gift shop inside. There were quite a few fun things, but quite expensive compared to other shops. I was enjoying it for the most part until I started to see prehistoric Native American pottery and pot sherds for sale. I didn't end up purchasing things partly because I didn't want to support a business that sells items like that. Overall, fun to visit on the way past but I probably wouldn't go again. The "museum" on the grounds also costs an extra fee. We didn't go through it.

As I was walking through the store, checking out the Pat Garret's gun then looking around at the cavern walls... then it hit me... This is "THE" FOX CAVE!... Hideout of Billy the Kid and his gang, The Regulators! I walk over to my friend with excitement and she's like yeah. Lol. Oh this trip just got a whole lot more interesting! We had been in another store the day before and my friend noticed that I liked the Salt Lamps so she said, "let's go to FOX CAVE tomorrow. They have the salt lamp room that gives off these amazing vibrations." So off to the Salt Lamp room I go next. Yes, the room had some energy but so did the whole cave. one spot above where the little stuffed fox is, I laid my hand on the wall and could feel it shaking. Great prices on the salt lamps $21 or $40 for two. I came home with one. My souvenir from FOX CAVE! The cave inside and out is filled with these quirky things. It is interesting and freaky. What kind of eccentric person put this tourist stop together. Just check all my pictures. So much too look at inside the shop that really is overwhelming for me. I was sensitive to the vibrations. I was sensitive to the overstimulation of goodies to buy. Good prices on many things. I found a headdress and beaded belt that I would have loved to buy for my costuming. It just wasn't in my budget. The lady we talked to that worked there was nice and helpful. Although my friend I been in there previously and said she wasn't so nice so the left pretty quickly. The lady said the Gem Mine will be changing this year where the kids will be able to dig from the dirt rather than be given a box of dirt. I'm sure that will be fun for the kids. This is not a cave / cavern to take tours which is a little disappointing. I would have like to be able to see more. It is more like these cool holes in the mountain wall. Then someone built a rock wall to cover it up. Then someone else built a building out from there. All this holds all the goodies to purchase. For me, it was about the history of the place. For kids, it will be a great place to spend a couple of hours during the season the gem mine is open. Stop in and check it out.

Again with my love for roadside America attractions. This place is great if you have small children, or if you just like to be goofy and have a good time. The main building of Fox Cave, and where the actual cave is, has plenty of stuff to look around at. If you like rocks/gems/geodes, this is also a great stop. The gentleman that works here is knowledgeable and seemed genuinely passionate about the things in the store. For a small price, you can explore the displays outside. Of all the buildings to explore, the Dinosaur room, and Alien room were my favorite. You can also 'mine for gems'. Its $10 a bucket and you sift through dirt, wash off what you find, and get to keep it. Being the self-sufficient adult that I am, knowing if my parents were, there would tell me 'no', I obviously did this and found some sweet rocks. This place is great. You should go there.

    Zombie hands!!

I love tourist traps. And this is a great one. There were interesting and ridiculous displays, along with a large assortment of rocks and fossils for purchase. The zombie hands on the front lawn were my favorite part. My family will definitely be back during our next trip to Ruidoso.

    Having fun with the Dino's.

Fun excursion for those staying in Ruidoso and nearby. We were told that's it's owned by a geologist; it was a very interesting place. We went in the winter, so the gem mining wasn't open, but it looks like fun for the summer. They had very interesting rocks, and a pretty cool alien room. My kids loved it, and they enjoyed getting their pics taken with the dinosaurs.

*Review is for seasonal sleigh ride only*…read more I have to say all staff was really welcoming and helpful-- from the lady who booked our ride on the phone to the guys who took us on our sleigh ride. Everyone was polite, patient with us and our kids, and friendly. The experience, however, wasn't totally what I expected. The cost to ride is $30 for adults and $15 for kids. Luckily, babies are free. For that price and because you have to make a reservation, I kind of expected there to be a curated tour and a specific area they had set up to view lights, one family per sleigh, and just for it to be more... personal. Unfortunately, it was none of those things. We arrived, paid, and followed a man who said our sleigh was ready for us... with another family. I guess I understand wanting to fill the sleigh, but I wasn't expecting to have to share the experience. There were 3 bench seats on the sleigh and we were placed in the very back. While we still could see, it made it more difficult and hard to hear/communicate with our sleigh driver/guide. Our driver and guide were friendly and asked us questions/tried to interact a bit with everyone, but they ended up talking mostly to the family seated in front of us. The guide also asked everyone if they liked Christmas music and just chose a playlist on his phone. The loop we rode wasn't on Grindstone's property at all, but around the town. So the lights we saw were whatever the rental properties and townspeople decided to put up, which was disappointing. We stopped at the turn around point and the guide got down and took cell phone pictures of each party, which was a nice gesture. The whole experience was just sort of lack luster. It was a great idea, but I don't think it was executed well and is a total tourist trap. The driver and guide mentioned that they accepted tips. While they were friendly, I didn't feel as though they did anything over the top to make me want to tip. Call me a Karen, but I don't think it was worth what we paid and I wouldn't recommend it.

It's a blast with beautiful views. Then we got our wristbands for snow tubing. You get 3 hours of fun for $38 each adult. We did several of the chutes, but as it got warmer and warmer, they had to shut some chutes down because the snow was melting so rapidly. Then we got a snack from the food trucks, which is awesome. Plenty of picnic tables. I had the best elote style roasted corn, and I could not believe it was $5! Advice: get there early or lines get super long (it is spring break so maybe it's not always like that) And wear shoes and clothes you are willing to get dirty and wet. I wore sneakers which were definitely the wrong footwear. Muck boots would have been great. I highly recommend this for a super fun day!

They said come back the next day at 8:45 am to get tickets, okay now today is 12/28, I return with all liability waivers filled out, got all the PDFs, takes 32 minutes to get tickets even though we showed up at 8:45 Go to get breakfast in town, come back at 10, come back, parking lot is at capacity, closed, their attendants only tell you to keep driving, no other instructions, basically saying better luck next time, we swing back around 10:15 now, takes 15 minutes to find a free parking space, get the kids out and ready, have to walk around this area to find the bathrooms, now it's 10:45, finally get to the penguin hill, the only person there attending is to check height, my daughter is 43 inches (with shoes on), in very broken English, the height checker says she is too tall, cannot ride, but we still go so our 2 year old can ride, it is a chaotic mess, absolutely no one is attending to this hill, kids are crashing into each other, people are slipping on ice, and falling with their infants, no help at all. Okay now it's 11:10, we have done one penguin hill, mind you we've paid $140 for four tickets, and they expire at noon (3 hours) My wife takes the 4 year old up to one of the bigger hills she can ride on, it is now 11:57, they were in line for 47 minutes and still haven't come down, my ticket is expiring in three minutes and i did not have a chance to hop on a hill, in total we were able to ride two rides, there are no refunds. This place is so poorly managed, I would not come back here again.
