*GUSHGUSHGUSHGUSHGUSH!!!*…read more I can't say enough wonderful things about this pub. This five stars is 90% based on the food. Best pub food ever! First of all, there are 5 or 6 veggie options on the menu, which is a rarity. Some of their options are a mushroom stroganoff, vegetables au gratin, ploughman's sandwich, and a mediterranean pasta. My husband had veggie lasagna which was served with chips and salad. I had vegetables au gratin - broccoli, carrots, aubergines (eggplant to my american friends), bell peppers and onions, drowning in a rich cheese sauce topped with breadcrumbs. Heaven in a bowl!! There was a lovely salad on the side along with a generous portion of coleslaw. There's a nice selection of homemade desserts as well, which seem to change every week. We sampled the almond cheesecake which was amazingly delish. Aside from excellent food, there is good selection of beers. The manager is a super friendly guy who remembers us every time and always stops to have a chat. There's a cool layout with the bar in the entrance and two rooms off to either side. There's plenty of room for groups, however it's still small enough to feel cozy. Lots of outdoor seating as well. The White Hart is now a weekly trip for us!

Quite lovely Sunday dinner. Food was plentiful and very good array of choices. We have done several…read morepub meals and this was one of the best . We both chose the chicken, spinach an mushroom pie from the specials board. There was also quite good new potatoes (nice alternative choice from chips, they also had mashed) and the vegetable side was a veritable garden. Green beans, broccoli, peas and carrots - all in a portion size that would have sufficed alone. The tomato basil soup starter was delicious. We were unfortunately too full to partake of any of the yummy sounding desserts. Service was friendly and location is quaint-true locals type of place we go out of our way to find.

This place isn't a corporate-type chain, but a wooden-beamed, crooked doorways, real, actual pub. Some reasons to love it: 1. Chequers is so cozy. There is a big fireplace and soft cushy chairs and sofas to lounge in. Even the dining room is warm and friendly and feels more like your grandma's house than a pub. 2. The menu. It is fabulous. There are a few favourites that you can always get, but there are always new dishes as well. They also have a vegetarian AND vegan menu--vegan friendly meals seem to be a rarity and I was impressed to find so many options. I've tried many different meals here and have never once had one that I didn't like! On the one occasion I wasn't keen on the options, they offered to make me something else. 3. The game room. Next to the bar is a small room packed with books, cards and board games. I'm a big-time sucker for a good board game and have wasted many an hour playing Scrabble in here. Everything about Chequers is welcoming and we're always happy to go back. Even my dog is welcomed with a bigh dish of water and last time was personally greeted by the owner. Definitely a winner for me!

Open fires in winter and a fairly decent menu of pub grub, with veggie options. Not very child friendly - don't take your little darlings unless they know how to behave. It is now a modern pub with nods to local history, in a centuries old building with history of it's own. The food follows the same concept, modern food fusion of an old British favourite... pie! The menu is simply three parts (four including dessert) pie, mash and gravy. You pick your favourite pie, your favourite mash and favourite gravy to match! Simple, tasty and brilliant! Pies are freshly made and rotate, dots on the menu signify which pies are available each day. In addition, fusions like Goat Cheese and Onion tart make their way onto the menu in the "Guest Pie" categories. To pair with your meal, they offer a good selection of local (and non-local) ales and ciders. Some with quirky names like "Ghandi's Flip-Flop". Perfect place for a pint, but they also have cocktails. Plenty of outdoor seating newly fitted with lighting and heat lamps to fight the chill of autumn / winter. If you are in Hertfordshire, or touring London or Cambridge be sure to visit this little gem in the quaint town of Ware! (45 minutes by train on the Hertford East line from London Liverpool Street) A few other note-worthy pubs and renovations have popped up on the high street, making Ware a delightful pub crawl town.

The only problem is if you go at the end of the weekend, sometimes only the lesser known pies are available. But all the pies seem to be really really good so far!!

I got the bangers and mash while by wife got the cottage pie. I think I got the better meal as the sausages were really tasty and the whole grain mustard in the potatoes was a great way to elevate the potatoes. Her cottage pie was fine but didn't have a ton of flavor. Food came out surprisingly quickly, but we also had an order of chips which was crazy slow to come out of the kitchen. The chips were quite good but we'd both finished our entire meals and most of our beers by the time we got them. Beer options were solid, some good German choices. Beer was cheap too.

This place is not trying to play up on an image like many of the bars in this areas and sticks instead to the important business of being a damn fine pub. Being quite small there is a naturally cosy feel to the place and this is complimented by the decor wuth lots of wood panelling and comfy seats. The bar has a great selection of draft and bottled beers and, for the summer months, there is an excellent beer garden. I've yet to try the food but they do serve traditional pub grub between 12 and 5 Tuesday through Sunday. With a great atmosphere, warm and friendly bar staff and an excellent range of drinks, The Carpenters Arms is a brilliant place for a relaxing evening or a great stop-in after a hard days shop.
