The English Country Garden Bed & Breakfast - view from 'The Russian Room'

The English Country Garden B&B was our rest stop of choice after deciding to drive along the Cabot…read moreTrail last fall. Cape Breton is absolutely beautiful in the fall with all of the deciduous trees changing colour! This B&B was absolutely what we were looking for in a weekend away. The rooms have all been uniquely decorated and are named to match their motif: The conservatory room, Rose cottage, the African room and the Russian room. The later was the room we chose and it was a-mazing! This was my first experience with a king size bed and I was in heaven. A family of four could sleep quite comfortably in a bed that size, just sayin'. The Russian room also overlooks a lake in the backyard and has a massive tub complete with jets! (woooo ahhhh...) My affinity for lime green and purple was happily met in the massive headboard and general design of this room as well. I recall the breakfast we had the next morning being delicious also. Definitely avail yourself of this B&B if you head up to do the Cabot Trail this fall! With such a mild autumn so far, you're bound to still catch some of the natural beauty of the trees changing colour. Our B&B proprietors had a wealth of information on the walks and hikes in their area as well. Be forewarned: There is a tiny little $5 ferry barge that you have to get on in order to start the Cabot Trail. We weren't told about this and as a result drove around for an hour trying to find another road... there is no other road. Get on the ferry.

The bed was comfortable, and the room and bathroom were very clean. However, there were a few drawback to the room. With these things in mind, it felt that our room was just a bit overpriced: 1) You can hear traffic on the road. 2) There is common room lighting that illuminates through the door all night. I actually went to find the switch to turn off the lights, which was not easy, and I'm sure was not appreciated by the host and the people who needed that light. However, what could we do? It was so bright in our room. 3) You *must* keep the bathroom door closed and the bathroom window open, as the smell of sewage will seep in. We found out the hard way about half way through the night when the smell woke us up. Breakfast was one of the best we had on our trip. Also appreciated are the loose teas available for guests. The host was not there, but the place was being minded by a woman who was an introvert that I would not put in charge of a B&B during high season. Though she was nice when you asked for help with something, she could come off gruff to some and volunteered no info about the area. I really wish I had known that across the street was a beach - we had no clue, and missed out on this opportunity that we surely would have taken, had we known.

Highlights were: - clean, cozy and very large room (we stayed in the largest one with the ocean view) - the best breakfast of our entire vacation, consisting of home-made granola with fresh berries, tasty plunger coffee from vancouver (hard to find nice coffee locally), and INCREDIBLE eggs Benedict with salmon that they smoked on site! - wonderfully adorable couple who run the place (though I have forgotten their names now) made us feel at home, and were just damn good to talk to.. felt like I was hanging out a friend's place - a short stroll to a sandy/rocky beach Cannot recommend this place highly enough - we were nearly tempted to cancel our accommodation back in Halifax so we could stay another night!

After a long day on the Cabot Trail driving from Baddeck and a lot of stoping and hiking we arrived at the B&B. Right away a young girl came out and after learning that we have the reservation for the French Room, she said that it was full and they would give us another room called the Cove. I was completely disappointed at that point since I booked a room online, paid for it already and now somebody was taking me to a room called The Cove, which is a room at the basement of Gulf Breeze, 4 mins drive from the main B&B. There was no apology from the owner or anything. We didn't even see the owner. It was already late in the evening and we had no choice but stay since we already had paid online. Anyways, we went out again and we were tired when we came back, we wanted to sleep, we opened the sheets and there was a bug walking on the bed between the sheets, the bathroom sink had so many dead flies on it, I wanted to take a shower after all the hiking and none of the towels were smelling fresh, there was no shampoo.. Should I continue more? The linens seemed like they were used before, there was hair all over and other stuff on the linens, we found some clean looking pillow covers in one of the drawers and used them thanking God we are staying there for a night only and wishing not to catch a disease. The next morning we woke up and left. We did not have the breakfast. I booked this place reading all the good reviews on Trip Advisor, I hope you don't make the mistake I made.
