The Plough & Harrow is a very old pub situated on an old Roman and London Road. It used to be an…read moreold coaching inn, and still has the old fabulous stables, redone and adding a touch of history to the place. A few years ago it was partially ruined in a flood, but the rebuild has gone a long way to making it one of the best pubs in Tamworth. It has a very large garden, lots of tables, a canopy and outside braziers for nice but chilly spring evenings. The inside has low ceilings, exposed beams and magnolia walls. It's a nice, comfy old English pub feel, but without the tatty standard maroon carpet. There aren't many tables inside, so standing is pretty much a must. The Plough & Harrow gets really busy on weekend nights, and is a haven to the young and trendy Tamworth set (you didn't know they existed, did you?) before they go on to a club. The music is pretty decent, through speakers, and so loud on weekends that talking inside isn't very plausible. The P&H also have a very nice restaurant attached, which I haven't been to, but have heard very positive reviews about -- it's mainly Italianish food with a modern twist. The pub grub here is very good, with some different things (Cajun Chicken Sandwich, YUM), and with excellent chips. I can't rave enough about these chips, which are nearly potato wedges, nicely cooked with delicious seasoning. The main bartender/manager is a really friendly guy, and all the staff are pretty chatty and nice. They often have fun activities, both for adults in the evening and families at the weekends, like an American 4th of July party (yay!), and festivals. They provide accomodation, which some of my friends from the US took advantage of when they came over for my wedding. The rooms are all refurbished and nicely laid out, with comfy beds and decent WCs. Nothing astonishing, exccept when you consider the SUPER CHEAP price. The rooms are all a bit off from the pub, so the noise level also isn't too bad.

We're glad we bothered to go a little bit off the motorway, as it was a lovely place to stop. The food was excellent- a wide variety of pub favourites and more unusual stuff at reasonable prices. The atmosphere was friendly and fairly warm, it was all beautifully clean and quite cosy inside, and it was easily worth spending the 10 minutes driving that it took to get away from Tamworth motorway services. Recommended.

We had a dinner and a lunch here and the quality was variable - for one meal sweet potato chips were in a number of cases undercooked yet the fish and chips proved to be well cooked and in fact such a large portion as to remain unfinished. Table service was a tad slow each time although for the lunch we had placed the order prior to Noon, the official lunch start time. Having such a large array of sauces available is a good feature but having to carry seven of them around & swap between tables is something that should be considered for change.

Reasonably stocked bar (yes, I know, that's something I always comment on!), with decent enough non-alcoholic choices too, including pretty good coffees (in the opinion of my dining companions who actually drink them). I've always enjoyed the sandwiches here, which you can choose with either chips or salad, and I was always happy with their old menu. They've had some pretty tasty puddings in the past too, including a chocolate and peanut butter torte, but PB is always a good shout for me. It is a poke-stop, for those of you who have jumped on the bandwagon (the other one is the church, heads up and all that). There is outside seating, out the front and round the back next to the canal is pretty pleasant, and can get pretty busy in the summer, but the side is a little run down. Foodwise, my only disappointment has been how hugely over cooked was my overcooked salmon, I wasn't too perky about that, definitely should be pink not white in my book, but it was a really generous slab of the stuff. The reason that it's middling in the stars, is that, no matter what time you go, the bar always seems understaffed (enough for someone to stick their hands in the till and run off once whilst we were having lunch there) and the food does take some time to come, so if you want something quickly, or your company is an irritating in law or a dreaded date, this is not the menu for you.

We sat in the pub area around 1pm on a weekday and it was buzzing. The restaurant was casual, English pub, but had a very nice, upscale feel to it. They have quite a few beers on tap and since we were there in winter, they had mulled wine. We got the chicken club, fish and chips, and 2 people got the pan seared sea bass. Everyone was very happy with their lunch. I ate the club and was very happy with my meal. The service was great as well. If you are flying through on the M6 and are looking for a break to grab a good meal, stop in at the Littleton Arms.

It's hard to review a single time, as I've been here so often I forget to check in. The bar is well stocked, isually a good range of beers and ales on tap, including one of my summer favourites, frulii. They even have prosecco on tap, good gin list, which is always a fab selling point for me, and a good range of wines, spirits, and a dinky but varied cocktail list. Pick and mix of sweet, nuts, wasabi peas etc behind the bar, and excellent tasty bar bites, cake, fudge, allsorts on the bar, which always has arrangements of fresh flowers from across the road. I am yet to have a disappointing visit here. Honestly, nights out, Chrostmas eve drinks, meals as a family, as a couple, as huge tables of extended family, the food is always great, fresh local produce, hearty meals, great range of meat, game, veggies, your lot. I would be surprised if someone couldn't find something they liked on the menu. Hot drinks are great too, afternoon tea is good value and super tasty, and it's changed hands a couple of times in the 18 years I grew up there, and the prices have risen ofc, but it's always been pretty excellent, with great rooms and breakfast to boot too. Would happily recommend to anyone, and worth travelling to if you like your good pub grub!

Update: 27/11/14…read more Given that it was a Wednesday and no good weather the place was nearly full. The point of the update is that two colleagues and me went to use the vouchers from previous visits. I held 9 vouchers. 6 vouchers gives £12 of the bill. No problem. I mentioned that the other 3 expired 30/11/14. Not another problem, swapped for 3 that expire November 2015. Plus 2 more for the meals that had been paid for.... So, 5 new vouchers.... That's service..... and guarantees my return. 27/5/14 OK. They get their star back. Wife loved the place. The kids enjoyed their food too. Service was good. Had a slight problem getting to the place by taxi, as the driver didn't have the post code. I tried to ring the restaurant on the number they rang me back on earlier in the day. No answer. Eventually got to the place. BUT - IS THEIR PHONE FOR OUTGOING CALLS ONLY? OTHERWISE, ANSWER THE FLIPPING PHONE. The Bill was as follows: 3 x small Pepsi - £5.40 1 175ml - House White (Sauvignon Blanc) - £4.30 1 pint of Shropshire Gold - £3.70 1 Pate - £5.95 2 Seared wood pigeon starters (my 10 yo enjoyed) - £13.90 1 Crispy squid starter (my 12 yo daughter) - £6.95 Mains 1 Fish cakes - £10.95 1 Burger - £11.95 1 Children's haddock - £7.95 1 Lamb shoulder - £17.25 1 Bottle of (no. 49) Shiraz - £19.95 Total - £108.25 --------------------------------- Visiting again ..... Tried to book online, but time was greyed out. So rang three times but no answer. Time was about 3 pm. E-mailed as well as contacting their head office in Chester, and I presume the call to head office elicited the call at 3:30 pm. I like the opening of the call. You tried to call us during lunchtime.... Did I, at 3 pm! So that's the reason not to take bookings.... I explained the time I wanted was greyed out - they said that's was because it isn't available.... I said I just wanted to check..... I told them the time, and they sad....no problem.....If places playback their conversations, do they still believe it makes sense? Look I'm dropping a star, and quite frankly I wouldn't have tried so hard, but I previously raved about the place, so my wife wanted to go. They'll get the star back if my wife enjoys her meal, and nothing goes wrong. Just answer the bloody phone!!!!!!! ------------------ 7/5/14 Colleagues persuaded me to visit again last night. I had the same starter. The rump steak for the main (£17.95). Lovely and succulent. Nice chips and mushrooms. Pint of Shropshire Gold: £3.70, and large glass of Shiraz: £6.70. The place wasn't busy, as I have heard it can be. I'm letting them keep their 5 stars, but if when I visit again and find them slow to get the drinks to the table, and slow to get to the table for us to pay, when they have already delivered the bill, then I might drop a star. There are enough staff available to cope. The staff are very pleasant when serving, and visiting the table. --------------------- I couldn't fault the place. A colleague introduced me to the delights of the place. Superb selection of starters. Fantastic lamb shoulder, falling off the bone. Starter: Seared wood pigeon, black pudding and roast mushroom with a game reduction £6.95 Main: Lamb shoulder - £17.25 Also had a pint of Shropshire Gold - £3.70, and 175 ml of Percheron Shiraz/Mourvedre, South Africa - £4.60 I was too stuffed to have a pudding. I would have done, if I'd noticed their pudding wines. I know, I know.... greedy, but I have a rotund figure to maintain. :-) Well served by the staff...... Now the wife wants to visit!!!!
