I went to Stevens Mortuary for the viewing of a close relative. Our family was cognizant of the…read morerestrictions in the wake of COVID-19. Even their own signage noted small groups of 10 or less were allowed. We abided as we took turns going in for the viewing and were understanding of the fact that only 10 would be able to attend the funeral. However, our large family gathered in the parking lot. A couple of times, the mortuary staff would come outside and ask us not to be in large groups. So, we gathered in small clusters of less than 10. Eventually, the staff came out and ordered anybody who had been inside to "leave the property." The loss of a loved one is difficult enough, not to mention how the grief is exacerbated by the CDC restrictions. We were visiting with relatives who had traveled from both coasts and others we seldom see. Honoring the small groups outside was not acceptable to this mortuary. Mortuaries are to be understanding of the grieving process, but the Nazi-like tactics of this mortuary didn't come close to that. I would NEVER have any family arrangements made at this location. They were more concerned about parking lot appearances than they were about catering to our family's needs. I would not ever give them one cent of my money or any of my family's future business. Shallowness and a lack of empathy are their way of doing business.

The building is nice and tastefully decorated, there was lots of room and different seating arrangements for guests (including couches), and it was a nice, peaceful place to pay respects to a man who was a wonderful person. I have no idea what it's like actually interacting with the people at Neal & Summers, because I was just a guest and visited for a short time. But my experience was positive.

She also lied about the earrings she had been wearing for 32 years, and had in when she was taken there. They were only simple gold hoops, but so very sentimental to me. They could not even confirm anyone had checked if she had earrings on. Most funeral home directors have an abundance of empathy, sympathy, and kindness. Michelle had none of that.

Families deserve dignity -- not trauma…read more I personally paid almost $8,000 to GH Herrmann Funeral Home to handle my father's remains. After they took custody of him, they failed to properly preserve him. He was left unrefrigerated for days, and his body visibly decomposed. The smell will never leave my memory. Under Indiana law (IC § 23-14-31-37), if immediate cremation is not possible, funeral homes must place remains in a proper holding facility that preserves health and safety. That did not happen here. Although my siblings & I declined embalming, we were never informed that this funeral home had no refrigeration, & that our father's body would be left unrefrigerated to decompose. Had we been given that information, we most certainly would have made different arrangements. When I raised concerns, I received an extremely unprofessional and abusive call from Jeff Herrmann, the co-owner of the funeral home. During the call -- which I lawfully recorded -- he said to me, "the fucking motorcycle accident turned him into a slushie, not us." Additionally, although my family arranged for my father -- a veteran -- to receive full military honors, at the funeral GH Herrmann Funeral Home told us they "didn't have time" to allow the full Honor Guard ceremony to take place.
