One of the nearly 3,000 people who perished on that day was Andrea Lyn Haberman, a Kewaskum High School graduate. In 2001, then 25-year-old Andrea had just got engaged and moved with her fiancé into a new home in Chicago. She worked for Carr Futures, a brokerage firm, and on September 11 she was on her first trip to New York City, traveling for meetings at the New York office of Carr Futures, on the 92nd floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. She got there about an hour early for her 9 AM meeting, but before it started, American Airlines flight 11 crashed through the building a floor above her. Months later, recovery workers discovered Andrea's cell phone and some of her other personal items in the debris pile at Ground Zero, which are now a part of the NYC's 9/11 Memorial Museum's collection. The Wisconsin Memorial is a place to remember Andrea and others who were killed on 9/11. Its centerpiece is a 2,200-pound steel beam recovered from the North Tower. The steel beam is anchored to a pentagon-shaped foundation, a tribute to the Pentagon, which also was attacked on 9/11. Gordon Haberman, the father of Andrea, worked together with other community members to procure the centerpiece. After a lengthy process, the beam arrived in Kewaskum in August 2014. The dedication and the opening ceremony of the memorial was held in 2021. The Wisconsin Memorial also features the same quote from the Roman poet Virgil which is emblazoned on the central wall of the 9/11 NYC Memorial Hall: "No day shall erase you from the memory of time." The Survivor Tree of the Wisconsin Memorial comes from a seedling of the Callery pear tree which was inside a raised planter on Austin J. Tobin Plaza at the World Trade Center. This original survivor tree was discovered severely damaged in October 2001 at Ground Zero, with snapped roots and burned and broken branches. It was originally assumed to be dead, but a branch was poking out of the debris and had given off some leaves. The tree is a living reminder of resilience, survival, and rebirth. The memorial also has two trellis towers to commemorate the Twin Towers and the volunteers who worked at Ground Zero. Many of these workers died of cancers and other illnesses because of their exposure to toxins at the site. The plant on these trellis towers is sweet autumn clematis (clematis terniflora), chosen because it flowers in September and because it aggressively climbs over anything, symbolizing perseverance. The sculpture named "Ascension" was made by Susan Falkman in 2021. She wanted it to express that from loss and horror hope will rise. As the material she chose white marble, a material long used to memorialize the fallen and the heroic, to honor the first responders at the Twin Towers. If you wish to show the post-2001 generations what 9/11 was about and teach them to remember the victims, this is the place to visit. On this small but beautiful plaza we will learn and see how tragic the loss of human life is but that good will prevail.
