Back in August or September of 2016 I assessed with Awake and Aware and was placed with my current therapist. Now I'm awkward and really don't do well with new people in general. However, I don't recall my first appointment with my therapist which means it went very well. At Awake and Aware I've always been treated with kindness and respect. Despite my constant mean mug they always greet me with a smile and appear happy to see me. Next, my therapist. I've been around the therapy block and this is the best match I've ever had. My therapist has a sense of humor, is able to put my feet to the fire when needed, and best of all is authentic. I'm purposefully not posting their name here because you got to trust the process of being placed with the right person for you. DBT is the form of therapy used at Awake and Aware and clients are required to attend skills group once a week for 90 minutes. If you're looking for a therapist this could be the place for you.

The first was what has helped me the most. I have worked thus far with Alexa Brown who is doing a phenomenal job taking me seriously. I struggle with the impression that the people around me do not, on even the most fundamental level, have any respect for me, and, as I unravel myself in order to heal the parts of myself about which I'm most ashamed, Alexa's unwavering validation has been invaluable. I could not have asked for a person to whom it is easier to speak. The second was the ease by which I have been able to access therapy. I found it surprising that I could manage to fit anything at all into my schedule, given how much I've struggled to access other forms of healthcare since moving to New Mexico. That's so awkward and unnecessary. Just set me up with a new therapist, and if you can't find one, let me decide how to proceed. I confronted her (calmly) and in her most syrupy voice she told me she was only looking out for me...she apologized, sort of, but the kind of apology where she explains why she's right. she couldn't find a new therapist, but most humane coordinators would understand to call the patient first and ask how to proceed. I had wanted to see the therapist a few more times until I could get someone new, now I am unable because I'm unwilling to have an awkward confrontation with a person I already feel doesn't understand me. However, I had a nice few months with a different therapist before this, who was pretty good at listening and making observations.

Humans naturally seek pleasure and avoid pain and in many cases that behavior is detrimental to their own success. Sometimes it's hard to hear when your behaviors are limiting you. But when you do hear that and if you can listen to that feedback and understand how you can make yourself better from that you were truly putting yourself in the top 1% of all humans. I've been fortunate to be able to spend quite a bit of time with Michael both individually and in the company of my partner and he's been tremendously valuable to help me understand some behaviors that are self sabotaging and other behaviors that are quite delightful and should continue. Myself and my partner of 11 years visited Dr. Rosemary Clarke, owner of The Relationship Company in…read moreAlbuquerque at 7709 Constitution NE, for help in exploring why we were having problems communicating. As a heterosexual couple deeply in love for over a decade we wanted to save our relationship and make it even better than it had been before. After several sessions with Dr. Clarke it became apparent to both of us that she preferred to view things through a female set of eyes. Both my partner and I thought she was unfair it her assessment of men in general and I began to feel like I was in the wrong on many accounts because of my sex. At one point, months into therapy I reached the tipping point and verbally disagreed with Dr. Clarke during a session. Dr. Clarke raised her voice and continued to verbally abuse me and rather than continue to argue with her I left the session telling her I would not be back. That would be bad enough, but the worst part came after I left. My partner would later inform me that after I left the room Dr. Rosemary Clarke counseled her and urged her to "immediately leave" me because I was not good enough for her and things between her and I would not improve. These statements came from the very doctor who was entrusted with helping us to rebuild our relationship. Together my partner and I visited Dr. Rosemary Clarke and paid her for counseling on how to save our relationship - as a couple. Instead, while I was out of the room she counseled my partner to leave me. Based on the 2014 American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics this was improper and unprofessional behavior by Dr. Rosemary Clarke. Under "Section A.6.d. Role Changes in the Professional Relationship" a counselor must obtain consent from the client when "changing from individual to relationship or family counseling, or vice versa" and "clients must be fully informed of any anticipated consequences (e.g., financial, legal, personal, therapeutic) of counselor role changes." Dr. Rosemary Clarke was hired by my partner as a relationship counselor to help us with our relationship. Instead, she counseled my partner individually when I was out of the room. Dr. Clarke never told me she wanted to speak to my partner without me being present, and obviously she never obtained my consent pursuant to the ACA Code of Ethics. We never saw Dr. Clarke after the aforementioned incident but frankly, the damage was already done because on several occasions afterwards my partner would remind me that "Dr. Clarke told me to leave you." Eventually she did, and I am not blaming Dr. Clarke for our relationship ultimately falling apart, but it certainly did not help. If you are truly interested in saving your relationship or working on relationship goals please think twice before entrusting Dr. Rosemary Clarke to help you.
