Fort Verde State Historic Park presents what life was like in Arizona, early in its history - including Indian wars. We spent about an hour in the main building, walking through a number of rooms and browsing the various exhibits depicting life, especially military life in Arizona in its early days. Many wartime artifacts are on display across many discipline from doctoring, to soldiering and more. In the last room of the main building, a video plays on a loop. The video is about Indians in Arizona and how they were involved in wars and especially how many of them helped the white man's army. It was too hot to visit the other 2 buildings across the street today, as they are not air conditioned, so we're not sure what's in them. Restrooms are in another building. Get the key from staff in the main building, then return the key. As the restrooms remain locked, they were in good condition and clean. We did enjoy our visit. read more

John had this on his hit list of things to do- we stopped in just in time to see one of the rangers giving a demo on various firearms used in the era that the fort was operational. Insert John's happy face here! They have an extensive museum and an outcropping of buildings that made up the fort. Unlike the other forts we have explored- there was no wall to help with defense. Reasoning was that the natives knew not to attack where the army was. So they didn't bother with the labor intensive work of building high walls. My only complaint was that the restrooms were far enough away from everything and locked. You had to get a key from the ranger for access. read more

Very interesting and wonderful place to visit. The history of the fort was fascinating and educational. They did a wonderful job recreating life back in the 1880's with many artifacts from that time period. It was well worth the time and effort to visit. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this park. The volunteer working the front desk was very informative. She spent about twenty minutes giving a history lesson about the historic site. It was nice getting the background filled in before I started the self guided tour of the museum and property. All of the old buildings were in wonderful shape. Guests are able to walk through each house and see how the military men and their wife's lived. The hallways are open and the rooms are blocked off with a plexiglass type material. There was a button that turned on the lights of each room. There is no air conditioning in the buildings so I suggest a visit during cooler weather. read more

We decided to take a trip to Camp Verde for the day and have lunch at the Steakhouse and visit the new brewery in town. The fort Verde Historical State Park, does charge an admission fee to view the inside of the museum and also cross the street to the other side where there are still standing buildings that were used in the late 1880's, as housing for the military, that were stationed there to protect the fort from the Native Americans that would pass through the land on their regular journeys. We just so happened to be there on a day, where they were hosting an old fashioned "Baseball Game". We got there at the tail end of the game, and lucky for us, we got to meet the legendary Maury Wills of L.A. Dodgers fame. Pretty interesting day and sight to see! read more

Hidden little gem just down the road from the casino or up the road from old town. The fort museum is a little hidden piece of history with period buildings and furnishing from when the fort was built in the 1880's. The fort housed the army to protect the settlers and miners from native attacks at the time. There is an entrance fee for the park but it is well worth the historic walk down memory lane. Check out their schedule as they have different re-enactments and events going on at times throughout the year. Parking is pretty good, two areas available to park at, close by and down the hill. read more

This was an Army post during the Indian Wars from 1865-1890. Both cavalry and infantry units were assigned here. Most units were "buffalo soldiers", Black soldiers serving in the post-Civil War Army. Native American "Indian Scouts", serving as guides for the U.S. Army served here as well. Only three of the original buildings remain, the officer's quarters. The parade ground is situated in front of the quarters. read more

We stopped here on a whim and had a blast. The two Rangers were so well versed on the area and materials it was great. It's not a "huge" area, but the museum and the three houses they have that you can explore are just amazing. It might be a little toasty in the summer months since most everything is outside and require walking, but the area is gorgeous and the history is fascinating. I highly recommend stopping here and walking around! read more

I had high expectations for this place...and it really disappointed me. It's definitely not worth the $7. I love historical places, but this place was so EMPTY. I'm sure it's good at one of their annual events, but I went on a regular day. There were NO other visitors there. I took my time in the museum, but it's mostly stuff to read, rather than artifacts to look at. There's three or so historical forts to walk through, but it really doesn't take long, and they're all similar to each other. I was looking forward to getting to dress to clothes from the time period, because I had read it in a bunch of Yelp reviews, but there were no signs about it or anything. Eventually, I asked an employee about it, and she was able to show me where the clothes were and allow me to put them on. So we got our pictures...but it was a little awkward that I had to ask for it. read more

We went when the park was closed and looked in the windows. It was nice but NOT worth $7 a person. The off duty park rangers were extremely kind and friendly. The building are restored with life size models of what occured in the 1800s. There were a lot to read and not too many artifacts. The flagpole sign draws out what once was. One star for AWESOME rangers and Alley pup throws in another star for bunnies running through the field. Bunnies are plentiful, happy bunny chasing! read more

A beautiful area with a ton of history. The volunteer was helpful and the park ranger wad super informative and swore in our 5 year old to the junior ranger program. There was so much history and amazing areas to check out. It's less traveled but so worth the stop. read more

Good small museum. Nice period piece room set ups in three remaining buildings. Nice small museum store & helpful docent. A must see.

Teeny but close to the highway and a good stop before seeing Montezuma's Castle which is just 10 minutes up the road. This little park has some cool old buildings and 19th century artifacts. read more

Been through it a few times and always discover something new! The manager there/ranger, is very interesting and has lots of great information and stories to share. Make sure you take a minute to stop and chat with her. The exhibits a really nice in the buildings are well preserved. read more

If you are in the area, this place is worth a visit. Staff is extremely friendly and knowledgable. There isn't too much to see here, some old housing quarters and what-not. It's some interesting Arizona, wild west history. read more

This is a great bargain, friendly staff, a place where you can spend an hour or four hours, good in any weather. Probably not thrilling for children except on the days when they have special events -- so check their website for those. The staff and locals are working hard to get alternative funding to keep the park open in these tough times. It was great to be able to support them, especially since the admission price was only $3. read more

For any history buff or lover of old things this is a GREAT place to visit. A lot of wonderful history preserved here. We come out from CA at least three times a year to participate in their Living History Events. February - Buffalo Soldier History, April - History of the Soldiers, October - Fort Verde Days. The rangers are very knowledgeable and love to share the history of the park/area. There are four original buildings, one used for the park offices and museum, the Commanding Officer's home decorated in the time, BOQ Bachelor Quarters furnished and decorated and the last building has some living quarters, surgeons quarters. We went to The Fort Verde State Park and had a blast. We got to see the restored houses and all the rooms layed out just like they would have been all those years ago. One of the most well-preserved colonial outposts I have been to! The buildings and grounds are obviously well taken care of, to the point that they look perfectly habitable to this day. The park rangers and employees are very friendly, and give a pretty comprehensive intro to the history and significance of the fort at the start of your tour. There is even a room with clothes and weapons of the era that you can try on and take pictures with! Don't expect a Smithsonian-type museum, though, this is a small state park and you can explore it pretty thoroughly in about an hour and a half. Overall, I really enjoyed it and see it as a (very) little-known gem of the area. read more

An ok fort. For those who are REALLY into history it will be a lot of fun. Not a bad way to spend an hour or so but children will probably be bored. No food available so bring your own drinks etc. read more
