Wow...what a beautiful preserve Fort. Made me feel like I was back in time. Staff and volunteers were friendly, helpful. Nice short video to give you some insight into what happened during the days of the activity at the Fort. Some of the buildings are being renovated to help the structure and preserve what damage was done due to time but that doesn't make the area less amazing. If you are interested into history it is one I highly recommend seeing. read more

The Fort Stanton- Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area is nessled in the Sierra Blanca mountains and is located between Capitan and Lincoln, NM. I spent a summer doing work in the area and spent a lot of time here. This large conservation area and park is a great place for hiking, camping, and horseback riding. There are two campgrounds: one of which has horse accommodations; both have a pit toilet but Cave Campground does not have running water. The park includes over 25,000 acres and includes the Fort Stanton historic site and the Snowy River cave system (the cave is closed indefinitely due to a sensitive bat disease affecting the bat population). The park was never very busy when I visited so it is a great area to escape crowds. A map can be found at each campground. There are many smaller trails that one can drive to and then hike in. read more
