You will find this statue in Ross Pendergraft Park is adjacent to Fort Smith National Historic…read moreSite. It catches your eye as you drive pass. There is a parking lot on the side of the park, opposite the stage where you can park, get out and take a closer look. This bronze was dedicated in 2012 to honor the extraordinary service of Bass Reeves, an African-American former slave who became a highly respected Deputy U.S. Marshal. He is credited with apprehending more than 3,000 men and killing 14 in the line of duty. The statue is 20 feet tall, and 14 feet long and depicts Marshal Reeves on his horse with a rifle in his right hand and his faithful dog by his side. Reeves is heading towards Oklahoma (the statue is actually pointing that way), which was known as Indian territory. It is the work of Harold Holden and the $300,000 price tag for the statue was funded by a more than five years of fundraising by the Bass Reeves Legacy Initiative. The statue was constructed in Oklahoma and brought over to neighboring Fort Smith, Arkansas. It is a very nice statue and has an uncanny resemblance to Reeves. It is very detailed, but that is a bit difficult to see because the bronze is so dark and also because the statue is so high. It is however, illuminated at night and has a title placard in the front and an informational placard off to the side, in the park. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, but like most all statues that I have reviewed, it is not a long stop and you should consider making it park of a larger itinerary.

Well, it's a hot day, we ended up spending a bit of time here learning about the history of Fort…read moreSmith, how integral it was into the colonization of the west, as well as their turbulent times trying to manage both the tribal communities and the white settlers who were moving into the area rapidly. It's a fascinating history And one that you have to spend a little bit of time going to the museum and understanding the different angles. I guess that's a purpose of a museum, right? We learned a little bit about Judge Isaac, Parker, as one of the first influences that had to deal with the wild West murderers and people committing heinous crimes that until he arrived, didn't face many consequences as there was no federal government system that was in control of the area and the tribunal process did not cover non-native Americans. Fascinating history. You can even see a replica of the courthouse as well as the gallows as they were over 160 people hang here. Take a rock across the railroad tracks and read a bit about the trail of tears. There are plenty of areas to contemplate the history. Bring a picnic, there are many places to relax and spread out. The museum is actually free, is air-conditioned and had clean restrooms

Wyndham Downtown - Fort Smith…read more A pleasant stay experience. Friendly staff. Hotel offers 255 Rooms & Suites. EXTERIOR: The hotel offers parking onsite and on the streets, front and back. If you are staying here for a convention, the Fort Smith Convention Center is located right next door and can be accessed from the outside of the hotel or the inside. If you're staying at the hotel, the easiest way to access the Convention Center is go past the breakfast area through the glass doors. LOBBY: The lobby is large and grand when you enter. The Check-In Desk is on the right side of the entrance. The lobby is spacious and offers plenty of seating places to lounge around. It was nice and clean. My only thing I would have to say is it has a strange water chemical smell when you first walk in. But, once you go past the elevators you notice a nice waterfall. ROOM: My King Room was really nice, spacious and clean. I spent two nights here. My bed was very comfortable and sheets were clean. Pillows were comfortable too. The only thing this room did not have was a microwave or fridge. It was not a big deal with me because I ate out at Thai Curry Restaurant that was five-minute walk. They have really good Authentic Thai Cuisine. If you are staying long term at some of the rooms, be mindful that your room may not have a fridge and microwave. Always double check with front desk and depending on how busy the hotel is, you may be able to get a different room to accommodate you the best. BATHROOM: I really liked the bathroom. It had a beautiful LED Vanity Mirror with decent countertops space. My shower was double glass doors, stand up shower and no issues. The shower water pressure was good. They offered generous amounts of towels. If you need more, the front desk was very friendly, no fuss and helpful when I needed more. BREAKFAST: Breakfast is available as a separate cost or with your room rate. When you check in, you will receive breakfast coupons for the number of days of your stay. Breakfast buffet is only offered when the hotel is busy with larger events. I stayed here when it was less people, so I was not able to take advantage of their breakfast buffet. First morning, I ordered House Omelette - Sausage & Cheese Omelette with house potatoes and wheat toast. It was very delicious and generous portion that I couldn't finish it. The service was fast and friendly. The second morning I ordered, House Omelette - Bacon and Cheese with house potatoes. I did not receive toast, nor was I asked if I wanted toast. Compared to the first morning, the waitress was more friendlier and curtious. The waiter on my second morning was decent but I felt he lacked customer service. FITNESS & WIFI: I was able to get a workout done at their Fitness Center. It was spacious and the equipment is provided by Life Fitness. WiFi through the room and hotel worked good, not great. OVERALL: I had a nice experience and enjoyed my stay. The front desk staff were nice and everyone else I came in contact with. I would certainly stay here again. It does have some things that are dated, but I'm ok with it, as long as they keep up the cleanliness on it. I would recommend this hotel if you're visiting Fort Smith.
