Forrest Gump Point is part of American cinematic history. If you are a fan of Forest Gump, this is a must stop for a picture. Watch out for traffic and yes it has a section where you can pull over and park.

Touristy as hell? Yes! But when in Mexican Hat, why not join the throngs of tourists who brave a fun selfie or two in the middle of US-163? There are a couple of parking pull-offs as well as signage encouraging motorists to beware of pedestrians, making it easier to go for the Gump glory.

For the movie buffs out there, this is the spot where Forrest Gump decides he's going to stop running. Of course I was going to stop here! It's just a little wayside stopping area on the side of highway 163 just north of Monument Valley. It's not unusual to see different groups of people standing along the roadside at various spots, waiting for traffic to pass so they can "get the shot". My phone couldn't get a signal, so I couldn't get the Yelp check-in, but I definitely tried! This is a fun little thing to do if you're a movie buff, but you're not really missing anything if you don't stop. 54/2024

As our time at Monument Valley was drawing to a close we remembered Will Cowboy suggested we visit Forrest Gump Point. The spot is where Forrest Gump stopped his run across the country and back. Lovely and desolate except for the tourist walking in the middle of the road for selfies. Forrest: [running] I had run for 3 years, 2 months, 14 days, and 16 hours. [he stops and turns around] Young Man Running: Quiet, quiet! He's gonna say something! Forrest: I'm pretty tired... I think I'll go home now.

Not too busy as we found a spot to park.

This two lane highway boasts a Forrest Gump point sign and turn outs to park and take in the view. People really do stand in the middle of the road to take pictures. Seemingly unaware of potential cars coming along. When we visited I actually had to stop because four people were doing just that, standing in the middle of the road. Wow, just wow is all I can say. If only we all could handle heartbreak like Forrest did. We'd all be better off for it. We were staying approximately 20 minutes from this spot at The View Cabins. Located on Navajo Tribal land in Monument Valley. This movie challenges ones misperceptions about the intellectually disabled. Played by Tom Hanks. Forrest guides the viewer thru his life. The up's and down's, grief, heartbreak, happiness and success. Forrest makes the chore of emotional navigation seem rather simple. His mother never gives up on him. After Forrest is heartbroken by Jenny he goes running across the country for three and a half years. When he is finally done running, Forrest finds himself at mile marker 13 in Utah, with a pack of his followers and a very long beard. The cast of Forrest Gump movie includes; Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), Sally Field (Mrs. Gump), Robin Wright (Jenny), Mykelti Williamson (Bubba Blue), Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan) and Haley Joel Osment (Forrest Gump, Jr.). I highly recommend this movie to anyone who's never seen it. Emotionally uplifting and powerfully poignant.

At 1st we had no idea why the speed limit sign said 45MPH ahead (was 65). We started seeing people standing in the road at a distance. Crazy people? No, just caught up in the moment. We just drove on by going to Gooseneck State park. On the way back to Sleeping Bear Campground we just had to stop. The draw to get out stand in the middle of the highway and do the Forest Gump walk is just too enticing. JUST BE SAFE, because not everyone understands or care about your moment in the sun. Take the time to get your iconic picture

This is an iconic spot on Scenic Highway 163 just north of Monument Valley (in Mexican Hat County). This spot was the location where Tom Hank's character decides to end his 3 year cross country run in the 1994 film "Forrest Gump". Many tourists flock to this spot to take a picture in the middle of the road with the beautiful views of the Southwest in the background. It shows you that people still love this movie after all these years. There are two pullouts on either side of the road where you can park to take a photo. Approaching signs ask cars to slow their speed and keep an eye out for people in the road. It's easy to miss because it is a little distance from the Monument Valley area, but worth the 10 minute drive. For photographers, the best time to take a photo is in the morning after sunrise. The sun lights up the background and you get less shadows. Plus there are less cars on the road. But you do have to wait your turn to take a photo as there are usually a couple people already parked getting their photos in. Most people like to have a photo of them running in the street like Forrest Gump did. Or they will sit in the middle of the road. I rode my longboard because I like to be different. The long road leading into the distance mountains makes for a beautiful shot and totally worth a stop if you are in the area. GPS coordinates - 37°06'09.5″N 109°59'21.1″W.

Along the scenic stretch on Hwy 163 by Monument Valley is where you will find Forrest Gump Point. Just as you would imagine, this is named after the famous 1994 movie, where Tom Hank's character, Forrest Gump, reaches to this part of the US after 3 years 2 months and 14 days on a cross country run (or more like a journey) and finally stops here. Instead of saying something profound (because why would Forrest Gump?), he pauses, looks around and says "I'm pretty tired, think I'll go home now". Then he turns around and runs on back to where he came from. I came here at the end of March with my husband and our little girl dog around 6:30 pm, for optimal lighting. There was only one other person here taking photos, but wasn't expecting it to be busy since this is during the wake of covid 19. It was definitely nice to get a people free and car free photo. Worth a visit if you are visiting this part of Utah (~ 8 miles away from Arizona/ Utah state border).

Probably one of the best and funniest stops on my trip. You pull over on the side of the road, look out for cars and go for it. Monument valley is gorgeous

This place is absolutely amazing, I highly recommend as to do list. Best time of the year to visit is fall, winter and spring. Summer gets hot.

This is our favorite movie, so we had to make a detour to see this while we were in Arizona. It was worth the trip. Such a cool experience :)

It's always been a beautiful stretch of road coming into Monument Valley. That's obviously why it was an important scene in the movie. Even with the sign, this is all pretty informal. Since I was staying 10 minutes away at the River, it was certainly worth stopping by. The view is nice. Watching people taking pictures in the road is interesting as well.

It made my brother and me absolutely giddy knowing we were in the exact same spot that Forrest Gump once stood. 25 years later and that movie still inspires. Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks, and Forrest Gump are American treasures. Came in November during off-season so photo opportunities were plenty. Can't speak on what it's like during summer months with loads of tour buses. Between mile markers 10-13 (13 is where the actual FG Point is) each of the vantage points offer a unique angle of the monuments and road in the background. Word to the wise: Keep an eye and ear out for oncoming traffic in front of you and behind. It's nice to help be a lookout for others and to receive the same courtesy. If a car does come move entirely off the road and then some. Otherwise you'll get honked at.

    That wonderful view.
