I stopped in for a late lunch, and the place was packed. You wait in one line to order hot food either to eat in, or take out, you pay, and wait for your number to be called. If you want to order from the deli, you take a ticket, and wait for your number to be called, after you order, bakery items. cold cuts, salads, etc. the person that served you brings your items up to the front register, and you then have to wait in the same line (long) to pay for these items. I ordered one of their fresh natural casing hotdogs which was very good, as well has a pound of their house made baloney, that came highly recommended (also very good). My only advise is not to come hungry, because the delicious variety of bakery, deli, and hot foods offered can put a serious dent in your wallet, but remember, you get what you pay for, and quality of this caliber is not cheap, but very good, enjoy. read more

Oh my goddd. This place is what dreams are made of. We were visiting family and stopped here to pick up lunch. They were jam packed with people and well deserved. The options they have were unbelievable, a deli section, pre made food, bakery, basically a whole restaurant behind the counter. We ordered off their online menu but they have so much more - I remember walking in and seeing a crab spaghetti special! Their sandwiches are amazing, huge and jam packed with fresh ingredients. Everything in the deli window looked fabulous, meatballs, sausage and peppers, chicken dishes. Anything you can think of, I'm sure they can whip up. I got the chicken cutlet sandwich and it was huge, enough for two meals. Everyone else got reubens and cheesesteaks and they loved them as well. Huge portions. German Butcher is supposed to be the best place in town to get quality meats, heat-and-eat foods, fresh breads, and desserts. The employees are nice, and the place is super busy. But I tried their famous Reuben sandwich and the Chicken sandwich (added lettuce and extra tomato to both) and was underwhelmed for both lunches. Don't get me wrong--both sandwiches were really large, probably quality ingredients, but they both lacked flavor. For the Reuben, the meat was kind of dry and not tasty. The thousand island dressing was also really watery. Honestly, the best part of this sandwich was the tomato slices and rye bread. The side of fries was good too. For the chicken sandwich, the poppyseed bun was dry, hollow, and bland. The mustard was extremely overpowering (that was definitely normal mustard and not a nice honey mustard!). I don't know why they decided to put shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes instead of normal. I also got a small container of macaroni salad because I love macaroni salad. I didn't like theirs, it was too wet, and the mayonnaise tasted sour. I also got the marshmallow cloud cookie dough cake (hated the flavor of this and the cake texture) and the flourless chocolate (too dense that it was dry instead of creamy). read more

I've been to the German Butcher twice since I moved down here. I was to their previous location (D.A. Barsch) in Toms River years ago. My favorite style of hot dog is the German style pork/beef or pork/beef/veal mix. Especially if it's made at a butcher/pork store. The dog here is one of the best, along with other favorites like Pulaski, Kocher's (now labeled Leidy's), Swiss Pork Store, and Union Pork Store. What sets the German Butcher apart from the others is that you can get their hot dogs and other offerings to eat there. Nothing like having something made on location and served fresh. Today was the first time ordering their hot dog to eat here. All I can say is Wow! You can't beat having a quality hot dog that was made hours to a few days ago and served on premise. Nothing fresher. The dogs sold to go come in a few different sizes and casings. I got a few natural casing to bring home along with their bratwurst. But the one served here is the one pictured. A quarter pound at least and maybe more. Prepared on a griddle. Comes with chips or fries and a pickle. The dog itself was skinless but had a thin outer layer that was like a casing. It was served on a fresh bun baked right there at their bakery. Perfect for this dog. Topped with spicy mustard. The frank itself was hot, tender, juicy, and flavorful. Top notch for sure. read more

I've been by here so many times, and finally found time to stop in. I'm so glad I did! The staff is friendly and helpful, the line moves quickly, and they have a great selection of meats and ready-made sides and snacks. I picked up some kebabs to grill for dinner, along with a couple of twice baked potatoes, and sautéed broccoli rabe to reheat. Got some carrot cake for dessert, too. Looking forward to all of it. Lunch was a cheesesteak Stromboli- they're on a rack behind the registers. Not sure if I'm supposed to heat it up, but it was pretty good at room temperature! Opened by two German brothers (Detleff and Wolfgang) in 1970 -- this market not only makes and serves bangin breakfasts tableside -- but the German style meat products and prepared foods offered for sale look as authentic and fresh as any I remember from my youth in NYC -- when German butcher shops were common -- especially in Germantown on the UES. Expect nitrates/nitrites and sugar in just about all of their prepared meats and sausages, but according to the owner Detleff -- the bacon and weisswursts are sugar and nitrite free -- for those of you who care about such things. I bought a bagful to try along with some dried spaetzle imported from Germany. Northern NJ and NYC spoils me with the variety of butchers and imported products available for most any purpose ... but in the bucolic burbs of Ocean County -- this market is as good as it gets -- which is to say -- pretty darn good. Great memories come from good feelings and Saturday the good people at the FORKED RIVER GERMAN BUTCHER SHOP, a popular largely take-out deli with terrific food, went completely outta the park to help celebrate Dad's 101st birthday. When rain washed away our original plans to use their outdoor picnic area, GBS managers and staff quickly shifted gears and brought our potentially rowdy group inside without hesitation never stopping at creating good feelings for our party ("101 is a pretty special celebration," said one manager and his staff, from table cloths to centerpieces to "Reserved for 101 Birthday" signs, were incredible) and for every other customer who passed by to bring well wishes. If the crowded lines were the only measure, this shop would be too-notch, but when you add the fact the meats, wursts, and other German delicacies is so flavorful, you have to consider The German Butcher a Five Star establishment. Update review: apparently they took the time over Covid to make some changes within the store and I must say these changes are horrible. If you want food for lunch you now need to order off screens. In general this isn't a bad thing, but they have no signage to let you know where to order. Problem number 2 with this system is the fact you can't pay at the screens despite them having card readers. So that brings us to problem 3. You now have to wait in line to pay. What is the point of a screen ordering system if it's still going to cause a line buildup at a register? They cut down the seating dramatically and now you must sit on top of eachother where the bakery used to be. They also now serve your food in a to go container where it's just piled on top of eachother. Nothing like ordering a Hot House and getting it with the chips and pickles under the sandwich which is squeezed in the container. Big steps backwards here! read more

I guess I was expecting something like Karl Ehmer or Schaller and Webber. This is far more low-key. Nowhere near the lunchmeat selection. I literally got 2 things, and only because I waited to get in and would kick myself if it were for nothing. Lovely people, and they really try. So good. I love going here because there are so few places that sell true wursts, German cold cuts, smoked meats and so on. Killer jalapeño hot dogs too! I'm the only person I know who likes head cheese (weird name doesn't describe it), a cold cut fashioned from bits of other meats held together in an aspic (clear gelatin) then molded like any other cold cut and sliced. It's delicious. They also sell salads, prepared food such as stuffed cabbage, chicken Milanese, schnitzel and the full spectrum of meat, chicken and poultry, along with fresh baked pies and chicken pot pie, assorted bread and even some groceries. It's always crowded and that's a good sign. So take a number and be patient --it's worth it. There's even a seating area with tables and chairs so you could enjoy your food right there. Absolutely the best butcher shop period! First off, you take a number and you stay by the breads, someone calls your number and YOU HEAR them because you stay where you are suppose to stay. Then you work your way around the store. The staff always give you time to look and tell them what you want. The staff is great! Sweet people and they REMEMBER you when you walk in. Very family oriented. It's also a family business that is being done RIGHT! The quality of the meats ARE BEYOND any where else! They are QUALITY! Their food is so good and so fresh! Try the fire cracker chicken and you'll be hooked! Also, if you buy a meat product that you don't know how to cook but you really want to try, ask and they will tell you! Out of the 18 years I've been going, NEVER have I or my family members and friends have been disappointed WITH anything there. Love this store. Very clean and organized. Their food is the best. People do make mistakes. I was there on Saturday and didn't notice the error that was made on one of my items until later that day when the store was closed so I took a picture of the overcharge. I don't know if it was him or the young man who checked me out. But when I got home the chicken wings and the loaf of rye bread I had were not in my bag. I did not get charged for them so that is not an issue. However, that pound of liverwurst sure needed that rye bread and the chicken wings were for tonight's dinner. Guess it's plan B for dinner.
