We went on a tour of Albany Park yesterday with a trio of guides and 30 guests, which is way too many for the narrow sidewalks. The description of the tour emphasized that this would be about the different ethnic communities which makes up Albany Park. However, the guides only wanted to talk about old churches, synagogues, and some old storefronts, and they didn't pay attention to anything in between. For example, you can find Hispanic, Korean, Punjabi, and Arabic businesses all along Lawrence, yet not a mention from our guides about it. We crossed Kedzie at Lawrence and there wasn't a word about the great Middle Eastern shopping on it. I don't think they even knew about it. At one point we passed a new mosque with a gleaming dome, and they had no info. "Probably new," one guide told a woman who asked. And when I asked how many languages are spoken in Albany Park, the guide tried to talk to me about the languages of the Balkans being just one language or different languages. "Who can say?" he asked me. I suppose he could have called the Alderman's office and asked for vital stats on something as basic as demographics before leading paying guests on a tour. There was no explanations about anything which makes Albany Park a vibrant community. They didn't care. They should not be giving neighborhood tours if they don't know about the neighborhoods. After two hours, we lingered at the back and slipped down a side street and looked at things by ourselves. And getting away from this dumb tour came with the same kind of relief you get when you take off a pair of uncomfortable shoes. read more
