I'm short. Not midget sized, but definitely pint sized. What this means is that it's impossible for me to find a pair of pants that doesn't need to be taken up. What THAT means (as I'm lazy, often poor and can't sew) is that I tend to wear skinny jeans that can be ruched up, skirts or I walk on my pant ends in a very unattractive fashion.
During a recent trip to NY (yay Masterchef!) I had a rare afternoon off and found Bloomingdales. On sale. With an extra 20% tourist discount. So of course I bought a DKNY suit and pair of designer jeans for bugger all money. When I got home I realised they were far too long for me and due to the original purchase price of these garments I really had to get them professionally tailored.
I looked around, did a google search of my area and found Forever Fabrics Clearance. I must admit I didn't find any incredible fabrics (refer back to point about being unable to sew) however what I did find was an amazing alterationist. She did both pairs of pants (with invisible hems) for $30 with a 1 hour turn around. Nuts.
When I had to get my wedding dress taken up I was originally quoted $150 and 5 days by the place recommended by the shop. Even though it had 3 layers Forever Fabrics did a lovely job for $45 with 1 day turn around. I can now safely buy pants and am considering seeing how much she'd charge to make up some of my favourite designs in new fabrics.
PS Yes it's in a house on Stafford Rd, but don't get confused, turn into Victor Street as it's located in a garage at the rear (see photos). read more
