I visited on a rainy Thursday night so there wasn't a large crowd and I grabbed an open seat at the end of the bar. A friendly gentleman gave me a menu and asked what I was interested in. When I mentioned the Old Fashioned, he advised that it was an Amaro-based version without the usual bourbon/whiskey spirit. I noticed a Brooklyn and commented that I sometimes made those at home. Very politely he noted that if I was making them in the US, it wasn't with Amer Picon, which isn't available in the US. He's right. So an actual, real Brooklyn it would be! I thoroughly enjoyed the Brooklyn. I also enjoyed some brief conversation with the bartender who was very good. The kind who uses the spoon or straw to taste each drink to ensure it was made properly. As I was paying my bill and mentioning to the gentleman who initially greeted me that I wanted to bring my business partners here later in the week, he wrote his phone number on a business card and told me to call him in advance as the bar got very busy when it wasn't raining. Turns out, this friendly man is Alberto the owner! Guess I didn't do quite as much research as I could have! I regret we weren't able to make a second visit to 1862 Dry Bar on this particular trip, but it is going to be my first stop next time I'm back in Madrid. Great vibe, excellent staff and a classy and friendly owner.

I can't exactly put my finger on what type of bar it is - a bit trendy, a bit divey - but they certainly knock out a good mojito! Also, major props for the fact that they stock about ten different bottled craft beers, which include a couple from the Madrid-based La Virgen. Service was friendly. My friends and I arrived a little bit after 9pm and we were one of the few parties in the restaurant. Still it took the four of us almost 30 minutes to receive our drinks. The waiter did not seem too happy to serve us at first, but his attitude seemed to improve once he saw that we were ordering several dishes. For our appetizers to share we ordered the artichoke and jamón (ham). The artichoke was a little burnt and had no flavor and the jamón was nothing special. For our main dishes, my friend and I ordered their salmon and it was actually pretty good. The sauce that they drizzled on the salmon and the spinach that accompanied it was a little sweet, but made the flavors really pop. My other friends ordered a salad and their steak. They commented that they were just okay, but nothing special. After we finished our dishes it took about another 30 minutes or so for us to get our coffee and bill. I felt bad for our waiter because it turned out he was the only one serving us and a couple of other parties that had joined us. They definitely should have had more staff to help him on a late Thursday night!! I think that it would be good to return to this spot once they get more staff and in the spring to be able to enjoy their terraza.
