The Unterlinden is generally known as one of the finest museums in France. We were there 35 years…read moreago and were blown away by the Gruenwald Issenheim Altarpiece, a set of German Renaissance painted wood panels meant to be exposed one by one as the liturgical year unfolded. The crucifixion panel is as evocative today as it was five hundred years ago. The museum's problem has been too many riches crammed into too little space. Many,like us, were not happy to show up and find it closed for reconstruction and expansion. The silver lining is that until October 18, the altarpiece, the Schongauer Vierge au buisson, the Lucas Crannoch panels and several other incomparable pieces may be seen in the Eglise des Dominicains, itself a late gothic marvel. The architecture, the stained glass and all the rest make for a perfect, integrated masterpiece, which is unlikely to be equalled by whatever new thing comes out of the expansion.
