My wife received a $25 Food City gift card from her employer. Since we prefer to purchase groceries elsewhere, we decided to use the card to buy a movie. We went to the movie section and selected a video and attempted to purchase it with the gift card. The lady at the counter was very rude and said we could only purchase food items with the gift card. (Wait a minute; it's a gift card not food stamps?) Also, on the back of the gift card it doesn't mention any stipulations. It only states "Card cannot be redeemed for cash. Use card to purchase merchandise as you would cash." There was nothing else printed, it was an actual $25 Food City gift card (not one of those faux gift cards that require you to purchase a specific amount or limit you to specific items that you can buy). After being embarrassed by the clerk, we decided to speak to the assistant store manager. He was very nice and could not find any reason that would prevent us from purchasing the movie. However, he wanted to check with the store manager who was also there. The store manager was a real cement head and stated that he was not sure about buying movies, but he knew that you could not buy gas, alcohol or cigarettes with the gift card. (Again, the card does not say anything about limiting what you can or cannot buy) Finally, after speaking to the same girl at the register where we had first attempted to make our purchase, he decided to prevent us from buying the movie with the card. (I am not a lawyer, but when you have a gift card is it not a contract?) We decided to leave and call the main company (K-VAT Food Stores, Inc). (What a waste of time) The lady at K-VAT customer service also rudely attempted to say that you could not purchase movies with the gift card either. She said that it is supposed to be printed on the card. However, after looking at the card herself, she realized that it didn't say anything about only purchasing or not purchasing specific items. Suddenly, she became shell shocked and started back peddling by apologizing for the situation. She said she couldn't do anything about it herself, but would notify the regional manager and he would call us back. Later on that evening, the regional manager called and stated that we could go into the store and purchase the movie. He said that the Food City gift cards can be used for any merchandise that they sell including gas. He stated that he spoke with the store manager and that there would not be any further issues. (It was just a movie, but still it was the principle.) Therefore, we went to the store and got the movie, believing it was now going to go smoothly. To our disappointment, it was a repeat situation. The cashier did not want to allow us to purchase it, so she called the manager. He allowed the purchase and she attempted to scan the video, nothing happened. She would not believe us on the cost of the movie, so she had someone to go find out the price. While we were waiting, she started taking customers ahead of use with huge amounts of groceries, making us wait about 15 minutes. Also, a bag boy told us to move out of the way. (All of this hassle over a stupid Food City gift card.) In short, we finally got the movie, but was the cost worth the trouble? Eek! Methinks not! (Also, probably the reason why we purchase groceries elsewhere) read more
