This is an adequate weekly paper that does a fair job of telling the reader what is happening in Jacksonville. It also does a good job of rating the entertainment/dining establishments in town (Actually, this is the one thing it consistently gets right). If it stopped at this, Folio would be perfect. Unfortunately, the editors (and advertisers?) think that the paper's true purpose is to provide counter-culture.
The problem begins here, because Jacksonville lacks so greatly in personality, identity, and culture that Folio seems at a loss for where to begin. It's a shame that what results from this is a sanctimonious, leftist, propaganda outlet (for the record, I'm not a "Fox News True Believer"--I just see clearly that both right and left play different octaves of the same tune). The features of Folio do so much more to demonstrate the self-loathing psychosis of its writers than to illuminate or open the minds of anyone who might read it. It's actually quite laughable at times, since there is a back-woodsy Southern-ness to much of the whacked out left wing sentiment spewed so liberally throughout the articles published in Folio.
We can hope for a change for the better, but until then, I'll be happy to skip the "content," browse the upcoming events, and move right on to laughing at the silly rednecks posting to "I Saw You" before I toss this fairly worthless rag in the garbage (it's not really worth recycling). read more
