Great suggestion from the Michelin guide, the food is simple and from what I can tell mostly local…read more I will say that they could be more precise with their presentation (the Crudo was cut in uneven sizes and oiled unevenly, making some bites much better than others) but overall the food was great! They also speak English witch is a plus, though I think most people have a very good control of it.

Fantastic selection of pasta dishes, ranging from delicate to hearty, and sized for every appetite…read more(each dish comes in a regular or maxi size). Located in a basement with the entrance hidden in an alleyway off a courtyard in the middle of town, Spaghetti Notte is a little gem that is frequented mostly by locals. It's super family friendly, your kids will get something to colour in and, if they let the staff hang it up on the wall in the restaurant, get a little treat. Pricing is very fair, with the most expensive maxi sized Spaghetti dish coming in at around €15. But the menu also holds a bunch OMG other delicious dishes for those that might want a break from pasta. It's not fancy, but the food is so good that you won't care, and I doubt anyone in your party will leave unsatisfied.

The informal space belies the formality of the service and the dedication of the chef, which are way above the usual levels for small hotels. I had two dinners and a lunch there, one dinner being the "chef's surprise menu", a languorous experience for both eyes and tastebuds, accompanied by some excellent wines. I could only fault the macaroons filled with goat's cheese, for being too sweet. Otherwise, the tastes were refined and sometimes surprising in their combinations. A shrimp "sashimi" in tomato water stood out, as did all fish mains. All this was not cheap in absolute terms, but way less expensive than it would have been in Northern Europe, and the lack of pretense made the elaborate dishes an adventure rather than a parade.

What a gem! I was with good company who recalled the place from a previous dinner here - otherwise…read morethere's little chance you'd walk in just waking by. We sat in the small open-air space in the back, and sought advice from the chef. A good thing, too: I would not have deciphered the item in the menu that stood for "astonishing cured meat with some crazy savoury ice cream", or the giant filled pasta (the correct name of which I forget) with chives and a cheesy filling. The pasta itself made me remember why I avoid pasta pretty much anywhere -- because once every few months I have pasta like this, and nothing else is good enough. We were both content, but Jan remembered an exceptional piece of meat, and we asked about sharing a steak. When it arrived, in strips that revealed a deep pink surrounded by a perfect brown, our giving in to minor gluttony was justified: it was so tender that no knife was needed to cut this up, and we recalled stories of Kobe beef. When we complimented the chef he told us that the meat was from a private farm in Ireland where cows were treated as per the Japanese method -- no surprise, then. The price was perfectly agreeable, and the service friendly and helpful: superb food in an honest environment.

It was freezing cold outside, but I must have a gelato! This was my very first gelato in Italy…read more 3 scoops of gelato for €2.50. A real deal indeed! I had the pistachio, zuppa inglese, and bacio. There was a mini cone to scoop the gelato. So cute! People say if the pistachio gelato is good, that means the rest of the gelato in the gellateria are good too. The pistachio was good with a smooth texture. Zuppa inglese (English soup) is very popular in Emilia-Romagna region. I had never tasted any gelato like zuppa inglese. It had sponge cake dipped in Alchermes, a herb liqueur and thick egg custard with lemon zest. This explains the bright colours in the gelato. It tasted like a mixture of cake and ice cream. The other flavour Bacio (chocolate hazelnut) was good too. Not too sweet. The chocolate did not overwhelm the aroma of the hazelnut. I will return for more gelato!
