Don't pass this place by. Not only is it nice and comfy inside, FM Mangal is cooking their amazing Turkish food with a wood fire. It's a semi open kitchen and super clean, has lovely servers and hands down the BEST Turkish food I've had. The M-F noon to 2:00 lunch special menu is fantastic, generous portion and entrees include soft drink or wine. As of writing this review the lunch entrees were 9.50. I went for the Imam Bayildi (roasted aubergine topped with veggies and cheese). The plate came with a beautiful, incredibly fresh salad assortment and rice. My husband got perfectly cooked, marinated lamb shish kabob, again with the salads and rice. Before our entrees, the server brought a really lovely grilled pita with warm unique roasted onion dipping sauce. WOW! I had to resist drinking that from the bowl! To end, our server brought out 2 bite sized pistachio baklava and then 2 Turkish delight with the bill. read more

We stopped in for lunch mid week since we were staying in a hotel across the street and another guest raved about the food here. They provided complimentary warm pita with oil, red wine vinegar and cooked onion while we waited for our food. We started with sigara boregi which is deep flaky pastry stuffed with feta cheese and parsley. For mains, I had the kuzu sis, lamb kebabs, and my wife had the imam bayildi, stuffed eggplant. They both came with three sides, green cabbage, carrot and red cabbage. All of the food was delicious We definitely didn't need a starter since there was a lot of food with the mains. The best part is that M-F our mains and a glass of wine or soft drink were only £9.50 each. Service was very good and we'd definitely come back if we're in the area again. read more

I went for a some late night bites with a friend. He ordered the lamb kebab and I ordered calamari and chips. We both enjoyed our food very much. Everything was tasty, especially the complementary warm bread and sauce! They also offered complimentary baklava at the end of the meal -- what a treat! I don't want to get accused of hyperbole here, so let's just be clear from the outset that everything in this review is my true, measured opinion... BEST MEAL I HAVE EVER EATEN Yep, true dat. Get thee down here if you want to munch exquisite (cheap) Turkish food and experience great friendly service. The Food: (£32 for 3 beers, shared starter and two mains) A delicious hot mezze platter with a bowl of what my partner and I have christened Meat Bread. Meat Bread should have a church built in its honour. Turkish flatbread brushed with meat juices from the charcoal grill that all the kebabs etc are cooked on, and cooked over said charcoals, for a smokey, oily, meaty taste sensation akin to the wonder that is fried bread in bacon fat (approx 9 times more yummy). Once we cottoned on to the fact that it was complimentary and unlimited, we ordered another 3 bowls. We were big fat Valentines pigs who struggled to eat the rest of our meal. I often go for lamb when I'm out, as it's the meat I'm least experienced at cooking. I'm used to it being rich and strong, served with glugs of red wine sauce or punchy tomato. I dreaded it a bit, having gorged on Meat Bread. What came out was delicate little pieces of lamb kebab (not greasy, and spiked with herb, pepper and spice) layered with a little bit of light, fresh tomato sauce, and some kind of beautiful hot yoghurt and butter garlic sauce. I could eat butter until it comes out of my eyes, but I had no idea lamb could go with such a delightful creamy concoction. A decent but not obscene portion, with a cute little pile of perfectly cooked rice. I ate it all. Desserts looked a bit rubbish, in a dial-a-frozen-cheesecake way, but that is so often the case, so no great shocker. The Service: 3 different waitresses tended to our every need and were really friendly and fun. They anticipated the boy's need of another beer in a non-pushy way just as he was about to finish his first, brought bowl after bowl of Meat Bread and all was speedy and pleasant. We were left in peace after eating- no pushing of the dessert menu. At the end we were brought complimentary almond and orange liqueurs and homemade Turkish Delight. The Restaurant: The restaurant is small but perfectly formed. Nothing uber-fancy, but perfectly smart and date-friendly. It is at the back of the takeaway area, which does a roaring trade. I'm told the takeaway lunchboxes (kebabs, stuffed peppers etc) are amazing. I came here on the recommendation of a very foodie friend, and am told that the other restaurants and pubs on this road are good as well. read more

'Tis true, FM Mangal does rocketh the free world. Scrummy Turkish food, delish beer, super-friendly staff and rock-bottom prices. Ker-ching! Other highlights of this resto incroyable are the terrace looking out on to Camberwell Church Street and the tightly wound iron staircase you have to shuffle up to get to the terrace. Once on the terrace, as I remarked to my friend, one could be in a Mediterranean country on holiday rather than in Camberwell. Rather delightful. Try it. read more

I chose this place (having never been) as my last restaurant meal before a long stint of global travels, and I'm so happy I did. The split-level dining room is very nice and the food absolutely fantastic, from the complimentary flatbread with delicious dipping sauce with grilled onions to my generous main dish. FM Mangal is absolutely wonderful. I can't comment on the dining atmosphere as I have only ever got takeaway but I can rave for too long about the quality of the food. As a vegetarian I have to keep to a fairly restricted part of the menu but that small section is stuffed with such goodness! My favourite dish by far is a big fat aubergine stuffed with rice, tomato, bell peppers, covered in olive oil and grilled. For £6, this also comes with a gorgeous big salad of shredded lettuce, carrot, onion and tomato, as well as an incredible soft and chewy flatbread about the size of a pillowcase, covered in sumac. I absolutely love it, it's definitely my favourite place in the area. My OH also informs me that the meat dishes are just as good! read more

Four plus stars After walking by this place for half a year (the exterior of the shop being fairly understated, with a rubbish tip in front of the door I finally stopped in and since have been many times, with my favorites for sitdown the FM Mangal special (flatbread and lamb) and a vegetarian dish with roasted aubergines and peppers. Very large portions, free flatbread, not too oily, and very good taste and price. The lamb sis takeaway kebab is also excellent although calling ahead on the takeaway is advisable to avoid the wait (it's made fresh after the order, which leads to very good taste in the kebab but means that it takes over 10 minutes to make takeaway. Drinks are not super duper cheap but otherwise I would say this is a great venue and I will definitely visit it again. Protip: Don't get seated near the bathroom downstairs. Outstanding Turkish food. Whilst I have only eaten the takeaway you can rest assured that the same attention to detail, intense flavours and skill goes into this as the sit down menu. Theatrical environment with the centre piece a giant coal fired grill. Try the fm mangal special for some meaty goodness and make sure you get one of their Turkish salads. Be prepared to wait for at least twenty minutes for your takeaway because of popularity but luckily there's a nice boozer over the road with a great selection of ales at the Stormbird. read more

While there're plenty of cheaper options on the same stretch (esp my all-time fave Falafel and Schawarma) this is the place to come for a sit-down, slap-up Turkish feast. This time I had humus and falafel with some flatbread, but I've tried lamb on a previous visit and it was all sorts of smokey tender. I enjoyed the complimentary slice of juicy pineapple and Turkish Delight with the bill. Also the fact they didn't charge me for bread. It's these nice little touches, along with the efficient and courteous service, that really makes F M Mangal stand out. read more

This place is brilliant. It's Turkish, and doesn't look much from the outside (not helped by the takeaway kebab offering), but when you go in there's a proper restaurant and the food is fantastic. They give you delicious bread when you arrive. Main courses are about £8, desserts £2-3. A three course dinner for two with a glass of wine each cost £32, and was way too much food. read more

Excellent Turkish food in a vibrant local area that is getting ever better for cheap eats. I visited FM Mangal with my girlfriend for lunch last week and we had a great experience. Quickly seated by friendly and polite waitresses we opted to go for the lunch special, a steal at £8.50! I ordered the lamb kebab with rice and salad, and my girlfriend chose lamb moussaka. Whilst we were waiting for our main meal we were given a complimentary starter of turkish flatbread with grilled onions in a tasty dipping sauce. The dipping sauce seemed to be a red wine reduction and was delicious! The flatbread was to die for, cooked fresh over hot coals, and coated in spices and oil for succulent flavour. My main course was excellent, tenderly cooked lamb which was soft and melted in the mouth. This came with a big wedge of lemon and fresh traditional turkish salad and a good serving of rice. My girlfriend also greatly enjoyed her meal, I tried a bit of the moussaka and it was great! The decor is attractive with turkish style lamps and nice lighting. We were seated in the upper terrace. I gave four stars as despite being impressed with my food, I felt the kebab portion was a little small! One skewer of small lamb pieces left me a little peckish afterwards. I have a feeling that this was because we chose the lunch special though, and that if we had been eating a la carte we would have received a larger dish. Service was attentive and friendly. Nonetheless though it was a great deal and I would definitely recommend FM Mangal. Oh and you get little bits of turkish delight at the end! These guys do a very generous £6 lunch deal*, which throws in an excellent (and filling) starter of charcoal grilled sumac flatbreads PLUS a glass of wine. Service is disarmingly friendly - as in many Turkish establishments, they seem keen to give you desserts, starters etc "on the house". Actually, the grill guys don't seem quite as friendly, but I guess you wouldn't if you had to stand next to roaring flames all day long. They know what they're doing with those flames, though! Some pretty delicious lamb specialities. They also have a balcony where you can sit and survey the goings-on beneath you while you chow down on your cop sis - nowhere else on Church St has a balcony, so that's got to earn FM Mangal an extra star. *Oops, it's now gone up to £7 - looks like there's been some cack-handed attempt at amending the sign! This really is incredible Turkish food, all the meat and vegetables are cooked over a coal grill, giving it a really organic flavor, the flat bread and dipping sauce they give you complementary is delicious. The inside has a nice feel to it, though from the outside it kind of looks like a takeaway joint. I've been here several times over the years when i lived in E+C and now I'm based in New York this was one place i couldn't resist visiting upon my holiday visit back. Great Turkish BBQ restaurant with open fire. This is a genuine simple place which cooks wonderful food. We had tabuleh, cacik and a roasted onion house dish with flat bread for starters. All really fresh and tasty. Our mains kebabs were equally tasty. My only niggle was that my minced lamb kebab was very salty and on the edge of edible. But we were hungry and washed it down with cold beer. Service was very friendly and I would definitely go back. read more

FM MANGAL IS AWESOME. I've been coming here for more than 5 years. I've only ever had takeaway, but the quality is consistently amazing. I'd recommend the Lamb Yogurtlu. I could write an entirely separate review for their bread which is the business. I have deducted a star for two reasons - the waiting time for takeaway is always over 30 mins - sometimes an hour because it's always ramorama in there - and when I phone up to order the person on the end of the phone rarely understands what I'm saying.... Otherwise I reckon this is the best turkish place in London. read more

Hands down the best Turkish food I've ever eaten. Seriously, it's that good. I have been several times in the last 2 years and have never had a bad experience. The food is absolutely stunning, cooked to perfection and very reasonably priced. If you come for nothing else, come for the complimentary bread you are given on arrival. It is honestly one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. Flat bread coated in meat juice cooked above the cooking meat on the grill for even more flavour infusion. Eat it with the accompanying garlic and onion dip or not, either way it's amazing. You'll be tempted to ask for more and more, but be careful to leave room for the main, which are very big and equally delicious. I normally go for one of the lamb and yoghurt options, or if I'm really hungry the mixed grill which comes with a bit of everything. Honestly though, this is one of a very small fee places I could simply ask someone to order for me and know that whatever comes out will be simply amazing. On top of everything else, at the end of the meal you are given fruit (with melon or pineapple), Turkish delight and a small shot - I'm not certain what it is but it tastes like amaretto. All of which, like the wonder bread, are complimentary. If there is one slight negative point, it can get very very busy, meaning service can be slow. But the staff are all very friendly and the food is well worth any wait. read more

My first experience of Turkish food, and what an amazing experience it was! The complimentary starter of flatbread with dipping oil is divine as was my main course of lamb yaprak doner with rice and salad. The food is really good value too, if I remember rightly the lunch time deal offers a main course and drink for £8/9! Portion sizes are great and although it doesn't look like much from the outside, the décor inside the restaurant is lovely. I no longer work around Camberwell and I miss this place dearly, the food is delicious and I'm yet to find better elsewhere :(. read more
