The small airport just an air strip with an accompanying industrial tent hosting the departure hall is located about 70 kilometres/40 miles north-east of Hamburg, in a different state (Schleswig-Holstein).
But, then again, don't let this stop you from catching a cheap Ryanair flight to Luebeck.
If you're into the country-side and historic cities, the Luebeck area may be worth a visit. The Hanseatic City of Luebeck (7 km/4.3 mi from the airport) is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list (for its medieval brick buildings). And the Baltic Sea is close-by.
If you want to make it to a larger Hanseatic City and don't have a car, take the aiport bus A20 to Hamburg. The web page http://www.na-sicher.net/ryan/ will tell you all the necessary details.
