Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt - Auf gehts! (06/2024)

Dropped off by taxi, it took a bit of time to find the right counters as we were so early that the Amsterdam flight wasn't even up on the boards. This is the usual setup for most non-US airports. Counters can sometimes rotate and so they post your departing destination (in order by departure, which I find confusing) and the counter where you need to check in. Once past that hurdle, the rest of the process was easy. Security was not difficult, especially as our Delta elite status got us into the fast pass queue. European standard security - remove all segregated liquids, laptops and other electronics out, shoes on, belt on and only a magnetometer. Through security is a large duty free shop with no "anti scent bypass" option so I zipped past it as quickly as I could. Lots of other shopping, many restaurants and at least three different airline lounges. Gate numbers are clearly posted, toilets were plentiful and clean enough. It was a mostly pleasant experience and I will be looking forward to another trip to Hamburg one day. [Review 12066 overall, 1849 of 2019.]

Worst experience I've had I think ever in an airport. I had a flight scheduled for 2:10PM on a…read moreFriday in July 2022. I got to the airport around 11:15AM, went to check in at Icelandair (I checked in online the day before, but because my flight was going to the US, I think I had to go to the counter to get my passport and vaccination card checked). I was thankfully flying business class so I didn't have to stand in the somewhat lengthy line there. I then headed to the security line...which ended up going outside of the airport. Outside! I waited for 45 minutes outside the airport in the line, and there was no wifi out there. Thankfully there was an overhang so I wasn't out in the sun the entire time, but there were designated smoking areas so there were amounts of time where the air was extremely unpleasant. Once inside, at least there was wifi, and then I waited another almost 1.5 hours to clear security. I was somewhat concerned about missing my flight even though I had gotten to the airport 3 hours early. Ridiculous! After getting on the plane, the captain announced the flight being delayed about half an hour to wait for other passengers since the security line is so long. I had a connecting flight that was less than one hour after landing, but thankfully the flight landed on time and I made it to my connecting flight without any problems. Terrible experience. I understand that the airport might be short-staffed and all, but either schedule fewer flights or get more staff. This is not an acceptable way to run an airport.

By the way you MUST print your boarding pass beforehand. Mind the fact that I checked-in in advance and also was waiting for the app to give me the digital version. Even on the app when I tried to download the boarding pass it wouldn't let me at all. I've been oversees for the past couple weeks so it wouldn't be possible for me to print it out. I don't carry a printer on me. Anyways I arrived to the Ryan Air Checkin counter where there were only 2 agents to process 200 people and waited awhile before the line began to move (at 4:30 am) then when I arrived to the counter I was told the ticket must be printed or it would be 20€, then 20 € per ticket. I agreed for the sake of time but the clerk I guess trying to be helpful suggested going downstairs to the computer terminal and printing it out for 1€ that it would be easy. I contemplated it and then asked if I would have enough time. One thing he did not mention was the risk if I DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME I WOULD RISK the $200 I paid for my ticket, he said I would have enough time. Well of course the computer I paid for shut down right in the middle of my transaction when I was about to print. Then I switched to the other computer, which turns out only accepted coins no cards. And then that computer shutdown in the middle of it, then I had to go back and forth between the computers just to see which one would print. So incessant if we could have PDFs on our phone. So now it is 5:30 we go to security, get through that and now at 6:04 am I'm at border control. Gate closes at 6:05 am. I arrive at the gate at 6:10 my partner is stuck on the other side of border control asking others if he can go through. 6:25 the gate closes, 6:27 my partner arrives. I am at the gate and I understand that we missed the flight. I understand that, and I wouldn't have mind paying and additional fee to get the next flight. And I stood there and waited about 10 minutes (because I asked who do I need to talk to and the lady said her colleague) to find out the next steps. When I asked about the update that when they spoke to me but essentially her colleague ignored me, and eventually they told me I would need to rebook a flight through an airline. So it continues I go to retrieve my luggage (which has not left the airport) and the wheel of my luggage was broken off by the baggage crew. And I had just recently purchased the luggage 2 weeks ago. So I went from paying $200 for 2 tickets, now a broken suitcase valued at $110, and $350 in new airline tickets. I am just so disappointed that my ticket could not be transferred that really could have made things better especially since I was standing there at the gate while it was closing and I couldn't just leave my partner that would be so wrong. I would not choose Ryan Air again, why they couldn't have digital or passport tickets I don't understand, nor them having transferable tickets ( oh yes I did pay more for priority by the way). I went from a pretty tough day to the worse day. I was literally drenched in sweat from running from one place to the next. I've been sitting at this airport for a couple hours interesting how I hear how many times Ryan airlines gates have changed, just a thought in case you might miss your flight!

If I could give zero stars I would. This airline is absolutely horrid and disgusting. The customer…read moreservice is basically non existent. The flights are not reliable, you'll more than likely go through cancelled flights, overbooked, technical difficulties and many delays, on top of rude service. I could go on and on about how horrible this airline is and to avoid it at all cost. If you think you are saving money, in the end you are not. You'll end up having to pay more fees(because you need to change flights if it was overbooked,) miss your flight because their website AND app AND hotline number does not work so you couldn't check in, then you'll have to pay for more accommodation because you won't have a flight till days if not a week later and transportation. I booked a round trip with Ryanair and everything I said above is what I experienced for my flight to my destination and my return flight was cancelled, which they did pay for overnight accommodation (out in the middle of nowhere.) My short vacation turned into what felt like forever. (We ran out of clean clothes, obviously, because we packed for our trip, not our trip plus) Sure, we were accommodated for every night BUT every single day we had to come back to the airport to "renew" that accommodation. Absolutely ridiculous and a waste of my time. No one at Ryanair cares about you or your time. I stood in MANY lines for MANY hours (7+) with MANY others who were screwed over. One woman bursted into tears and had a meltdown because Ryanair's website wouldn't update to let her car service know that he flight was delayed and she was absolutely horrified that she would be stranded at the airport, she got zero sympathy from Ryanair customer's service. I could go on telling other people's stories but I hope you get the point.
