Floriade is fine, but definitely over-hyped. So, come with mild expecations, and you'll be fine.
We moved to Canberra in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic so our first Floriade, in 2021, was cancelled due to lockdown. So when Floriade went ahead in 2022, we were pretty excited. It's the one thing all Canberrans talk about and hype up.
But in reality, it's exactly what it says it is: a bunch of tulips. And that's it really, a bunch of flowers. And the flowers aren't even the focus of Floriade when you're IN Floriade. The flower beds are everywhere but there's no feature flower bed. No one-flower-you-must-see-because-it-is-the-best-flower-ever sort of thing. Which is kind of what I expected, you know, given the name and such.
Instead, it's a bunch of food and booze trucks, with spots for the Instagram influencers of Canberra to post photos that might get a few visitors from Sydney to come down. But because of the whole of it, it's still enjoyable for everything else PLUS flowers. Food and flowers. Drink and flowers. A Ferris Wheel and flowers.
In that, it's more of a way for Canberra to say, as a collective 'Okay Winter, you're done.' In that regard, it's really great. And I'll be back. read more
