My root-canal appointment had to be cancelled a few times, as I waiting for the Canadian Dental Care Plan Card Enrollment to be evaluated and for the Card to arrive by mail. Sydney, the receptionist was extremely helpful by reassuring me that I was able to reschedule without issues. Dr. Ros was extremely professional and my root-canal was not painful.

Cathy, the receptionist, is always on top of her game. I've had her process both Canadian and American insurance forms. There's always ample free parking in the lot surrounding the office, housed in a converted cottage of sorts -- makes for a much less intimidating experience. Coming from Vancouver, I find it easier to drive out here than, say, downtown. I'm usually worked on by Faye, a virtuosic periodontal maven who specializes in all gum-related wizardry and wields an arsenal of gadgets and metal tools... She's incredibly detailed and conscientious in ferreting out all the gunk that shouldn't be there. Between Faye and Dr. Sayson, I trust their assessments and recommendations, because I feel they balance unattainable ideals with (my) practicalities and plenty of common sense --- for what's best for me and my teeth. Sure, I don't floss as often as I should. And I probably don't visit my dentist as often as I should. But whenever I do visit, it's an appointment I not only *don't* dread, but even *almost* look forward to! Besides, being located just beyond the busy commercial hubbub of No. 3 Road, what better excuse to treat yo'self to a bout of delicious dim sum afterward? My previous dentist is no longer practising and the two dentists I saw at two different clinics were not very good in diagnosing. So I fractured my molar and the receptionist managed to fit me in for an emergency consultation with Dr Liu. Kudos to that. I had a CT scan done and it looked like a root canal would be required and maybe an implant if the tooth could not be saved. Dr Liu referred me to Dr Labedzki as his schedule was packed and the next available time he had would be a week later. Dr Labedzki also took a look at my molar on the same day and took an additional x-ray (at no extra charge to me) for a detailed diagnosis. From the scan and x-ray, he had the same opinion as Dr Liu - likely root canal plus a crowning. I have a phobia of implant after my last experience a few years ago. I saw Dr Labedzki a couple of days later for the procedure and he took the time to properly freeze the affected area so that the pain would be minimized. In the end, a root canal was not required as it was not affected after all. A temporary restoration was done to the molar after the fractured part was removed and he recommended to do a crowning at a later date to protect the tooth better. Through my experience with both dentists, I find that they do put the patients' teeth first and will try to save it. They also do not charge extra or unnecessary items (maybe because I do not have insurance coverage) and I appreciate that. So yes, I have finally found a dentist whom I can go to for regular check up now.

When you first walk into the place, the assistants are friendly, helpful, and genuinely smile at you. I have personally been working with Dr. Ryan Lauwers, who has done a wonderful job. Upon joining the clinic, Dr. Lauwers gave me a full inspection, so their records would be fully up-to-date. No big deal, right? Not only did he do this, but he proceeded to explain to me each of the tests that he performed, in simple, easy to understand words. The testing was comprehensive - covering things as far as my jaw. In terms of actual procedures, this place has been a gem. It's about as easy and painless as it gets. I had to have a wisdom tooth removed about a month ago. It was causing me pain, and I was worried, because Christmas was coming up. The practice immediately fitted me, less than 5 days. A different dentist, Dr. Sara Bishara, performed the procedure, and was so gentle and kind. She was sociable and friendly, making sure I didn't experience any discomfort, and also quick. This practice is a phenomenal find.

A close and trusted friend recommended their dentist of 15 years - Dr Newitt - earlier this year when I didn't trust my other family dentist in Kitsilano anymore. Set above Chapters, this little dentist has a middle-of-the-road kinda look and feel, but it's Dr Newitt's professionalism, focus and no-nonsense approach that gets 5-stars. He doesn't chitter chatter whilst doing his work (which means he's focusing our your teeth! read: no errors!). He has his space observatory style magnification system, laser system and goodness knows whatever appropriately named dentistwizardry. I asked for more pain relief (I get nervous) and he obliged. He's a gentleman. My husband and I have been many times now for filling replacements, crown fitting/replacement, hygienist, mouth guard consultation - and each time I was delighted with the service. Dr Newitt will refer you to the best people in their field for larger more specialist jobs (braces, retainers, bone grafts). Why delighted? Whenever I had fillings elsewhere, there would be errors - they'd mess up and would have to keep going back (read: pay more). So far, Dr Newitt focuses on the job, and gets it done perfectly - first time. And that's the most important thing to me. And I hope to have a very long dental relationship with his practice, despite the 40 minute drive from Burnaby each time :)

We all know the reputation those from the British Isles have for dental hygiene; I guess it's because, at least in my experience, the dentists aren't very good. During one visit my dentist dropped out for lunch right in the middle of pulling 2 teeth, and I poured blood; another dentist pulled the wrong tooth for my sister. My twin brother also needed a filling and didn't receive enough anaesthetic and felt the drill boring into his tooth. The point is, I've been traumatized, and I think justifiably so ! Fast forward eighteen years. Yes, eighteen. I'm not proud of that, but what with bad experiences, and the fact that I travelled for years, I haven't been to a dentist in all that time. I finally booked an appointment after seeing favourable reviews for Aarm dental on Hornby as I felt pain in my teeth. I realised Aarm dental was different from that very first call. Jenna, the receptionist, truly listed to me - and even suggested I don't book my first visit on my birthday (which I was going to do) ! When I arrived for my appointment, Dr. Charmaine Fong listened to my concerns regarding dentists, then set about easing them. We spent about an hour or so going over dental history, taking X-rays, pointing out problem areas, etc. She made me feel comfortable, and that she really cared about me as a person and not just a customer. I told her I had a thing about pain, and that I was very nervous. She assured me that I was in good hands. It turned out the "pain" I was feeling was that I needed 6 fillings. We decided that 6 at once would be too much so we booked a second appointment, and started on the first 3. First she froze my gums with a pink mixture that tasted of bubblegum. After waiting about 10 minutes for it to take effect, she gave me a local anaesthetic with a needle. I was really worried about that ! She apologised, then manoeuvred her arm in such a way so I wouldn't see the needle. I honestly didn't feel a thing ! When I did feel some pain (for a split second) in the roof of my mouth, she warned me first and apologized again, after. Again, after a pause to let the drugs get to work, she got the fillings taken care of. After finishing we scheduled for my next visit. Since that first time, I've since been perhaps 4 other times, to complete work, or a cleaning, or a check up. I am so happy I took the plunge ! I've felt guilty about not going for so long, and it was something that was hanging over me. I now have no fear at all about going to the dentist. Dr. Charmaine Fong is an exceptional dentist, and really stressed the importance of maintaining a good dental routine every day with the right tools, and frequent visits to the dentist. I have since recommended her to my friends. My twin brother was even more traumatized than I was about dentists, but left the clinic smiling.
