I can't in good consciousness come back to Float Fest. I know the weather is beyond control, but there is zero shade, no where to cool off and camping is a nightmare and I've been to several festivals and none are as close to a cluster fuck as this. People take up way more than their allotted space in the camping area and the sharp sticks and freaking corn made for a miserable and very tight space. The ground is not made for tent set ups and crumbled when you attempt to set up your tent. There is ONE exit and it can take anywhere from 1-4 hours to leave depending on your luck. I left the festival Sunday night after the headliner and got home an hour before my friend who lives right down the street and she left about an hour earlier than I did. The medical tents are nothing short of laughable; every single one I saw was literally empty. Not even a person to stand there. Thank goodness I did not see anyone needing medical attention. How confusing for someone who needs something and looks at a map and goes to the spot labeled "medical tent", literally needing medical attention, only to find an empty tent without direction. That's a damn lawsuit waiting to happen. They have water refill stations set up in the festival only. Because who needs water at their camp? I know to bring extra water to a place like this, but some beginners might not think to and that's so dangerous. It was around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. I also can't believe I spent the night at a festival that doesn't even have metal detectors. How unsafe! In light of recent events in crowded areas, I'm so disappointed that there was no security hardly at all. All "security" did was make sure my wristband turned green. And on my way out I had to pour out my (non alcoholic) lemonade.. At a place that doesn't even check attendees for deadly weapons. Felt like I was at Fyre Fest. Never. Again.

I'm going to tell it straight. This is truly truly not worth going. I have tried twice now and I regret it. The first time I camped and years later, 2022, I tried again because I would be staying in a house. It's honestly just a terrible event. The event is held in DUSTY DIRT fieldssss and they put no money into infrastructure. Picture a dust bowl that you drive into, continue into for 5 slow mile of dust, you park, you walk a mile in 5" of pure dry dirt, and by this time you are good and covered. Once your nostrils and eyes have a nice coating of an inch of dirt you are entering the event space. There is not a single place to sit, lay, REST in any way, no lighting after dark to guide you back to your car, port o potties only which is fine I guess but where is the ticket money going??. Unless you choose to sit in pure dust and be covered in it. So spend 4 hours inside a wind tunnel of dirt and you'll have been to float fest. Xoxo. I literally and broke and chose to forgo the money I spent to get to not go back the second day.

OK, so it's not exactly a popular thing at the moment to conflate "well done!" with "government…read moreagency". But that's exactly what happened last night in San Marcos! As part of the Main Street project to revitalize San Marcos' downtown, an agency of the City of San Marcos worked hand-in-hand with local businesses to promote shopping, nightlife, and good times in the context of a Wine and Wassail Walk. When the revitalization project is complete, the old broken and haphazard sidewalks and dangerous "two-step" gutters which abut the angle parking will be replaced by more tranquil parking islands and uniform walking paths, transforming downtown San Marcos into a destination rather than an avoidance. This event was a desperately needed shot-in-the-arm as downtown San Marcos suffers in the throes of some long-postponed infrastructure improvements. Water and sewer line life-cycle replacments have rendered several blocks of entire city streets a war zone for what seems like eons, but has really only been about a year. For those of you in Austin who can vividly recall the impact of the East 7th corridor revitalization, imagine that running through the heart of your downtown, and you've got the picture. It will all be glorious in the end, but, in the meantime, this event was a great draw and boon for those businesses gutsy and tough enough to see it through. Eighteen businesses participated, including one humidor, a cell phone repair store, a barber shop, a paint-your-own-pottery business, several clothing stores, a few salons, and two museums. Very reasonably priced tickets were sold for the event to benefit Main Street San Marcos and United Way. In return, each participant received a wine glass for sampling, as well as a tour map. Event organizers were careful to alternate starting points as each new registrant signed in, so as to disperse the crowd and not overwhelm the first stop. Complimentary parking was offered, and there were free horse-drawn carriage tours available. Each business, in turn, got to introduce themselves personally to the participants and offered a variety of wine samples. Most businesses also had their own wassail, and nearly all offered nibbles of sweets or cheese. Nearly every business had discounts available for same-night purchases or future services. For a fledgling event, it went splendidly! There was never a hint of overcrowding at any of the stops along the way, and you actually had time to get to know the folks behind the storefronts. I was able to get reacquainted with one of the true gems in downtown San Marcos (Paper Bear) and my date for the event eventually had to drag me out of the store (post purchase, of course). More on Paper Bear in a separate review. Best of all, I got my very first woozie! Don't know what a "woozie" is? Well, I guess you'll just have to attend next year and find out for yourself!

I'm surprised that you can review this, but I'm going for it! :D…read more I randomly found an ad for this event while browsing online and decided to check it out. I purchased tickets for my husband and I and got quite a bit of people from work to come to. The check in process for everyone except for me was easy. I'm glad I printed my receipt because they didn't have me or my husband on the list. However! The night was young and so are we :D The event was organized well and went off perfectly. The courthouse was where you checked in, got your wine glass, and a wine koozie. The courthouse was also the first stop on the route. I believe there were 14 business that participated and it was so fun! The businesses all did a great job of setting out food, and were so friendly when you came in. The wine was good, the wassail was great, and different places even had other drinks etc. I have lived in San Marvelous for almost 6 years and this is the MOST FUN EVENT I have been to! I loved how friendly everyone was and the great atmosphere that was going on. There was also a carriage ride if you wanted to partake. My husband and I are lucky enough to live close to downtown so we walked and didn't have to worry about parking. I think though that parking was adequate as I know the justice center was an option to park at. I tell EVERYONE how much fun this event was, and I'm so excited that they are going to be having a Art & Wine Walk on March 7th. I hope it will be just as awesome as this one was. I also would like to state that this walk helped me get inside of businesses that I haven't had the time to stop into and because of this event, I now have found the BEST HAIRDRESSER and Salon in San Marcos. :D I hope this event will be a yearly thing as my husband and I will continue to go.

It's hard to believe at times this little gem sits a mere two…read moreblocks away from the burgeoning 33,000+ student campus that is Texas State University-San Marcos. Sights & Sounds is truly about a small town, community-based gathering for the holiday season. No, it's not a 100,000 person a night extravaganza where you're confined by shuttles as the only effective means of transportation, and it's also not an overly commercialized event, either. You'll find plenty of lights in the trees and from the overhead light poles--and piped Christmas music emanating from speakers around the grounds--but it's not a thematic Trail of Lights replica by any stretch of the imagination. You really have to appreciate the simple life approach that Sights & Sounds takes to celebrating the Christmas season in order to enjoy it. The community draw is the sound stage, where school after school, group after group, choir after choir, troop across the sound stage in this city-wide Christmas pageant. I don't watch these shows as much as I once did, but I always know someone's child in them. And, honestly, this single aspect is one of the more enduring and endearing features of Sights & Sounds. I think the event's allure increases dramatically on the colder nights, when a particular mix of wintry atmosphere, Christmastide approaching, and "Wouldn't a hot chocolate be really great right now" rules. Balmy 70 degree temperatures just don't give this event the same curb appeal it has when the weather outside is frightful. I personally don't care for the expanded carnival midway atmosphere aspects of the event, but, fortunately, you can ignore that as it is isolated at the back of the fairgrounds. And, honestly, the event has to appeal to everyone. The Bethlehem exhibit seemed more disorganized than usual this year. I mean, when the angels in the manger scene announce "The real baby will be here in an hour", and it's already 6:30 (an hour after opening), it's one of those shake your head and laugh aloud moments. Since Santa arrives by a different conveyance each night of Sights & Sounds, maybe he should bring the baby with him. That is, if Mrs. Claus is okay with it. It was great fun checking out the baby goats and camel. I hadn't seen a camel drink from a soda can before, and that was really quite cool. Just in case you're wondering, they do know how to rotate the can with their tongue to get the opening right side down, and no, they don't want to give it up at the end any more than we do. The camels and goats will nibble at your hand so be sure to have food, because that's what hands are for! Last, but not not least, don't forget to check out the Arts & Crafts tent. It's at the back of the fairgrounds, between Bethlehem and the midway. There's only one solitary white tent, so there are fewer vendors than there once were when there were two plus candy-cane motif tents, but you still might find that unique Christmas gift for that special someone here. San Martian by trade, Austinite by residence, I will attest that Sights & Sounds is both a "Don't miss" and a keeper. UPDATE: Pictures added 12/5/2010.

Before i could even pull my pants up, the Ground was rocking back and forth beneath me. I shouted for help but my cries were in vain. With one final shove, the porta-potty was tipped and i was instantly drenched with the city of san marcos' bodily waste. The Horrifying stench was like nothing i'd ever experienced and the hot, soupy texture will plague my nightmares forever. Went to the "Dirt Dauber" festival here which was a celebration of local pottery. Artists were set up everywhere, there were workshops/demos/contests, live music, pets and kiddos running around, hot dogs, and free beer (you were simply encouraged to purchase a vessel in which to pour it in). Everyone was ridiculously talented - and so friendly. The local community (san marcos I guess) is so supportive, but folks came out from all over in support. One highlight was they had the pottery wheels set up to play! SO. MUCH. FUN. (especially after beer) I totally want a wheel now, but it's easy to see it takes quite a bit of practice along with significantly more artistry than I possess. (Oh, and that scene from Ghost? Totally realistic because it's seriously erotic for some reason.) I am fortunate enough to be friends with the niece of the owners of the property (Beverley and Billy Ray rock!), and am unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to get a tour of the whole place. This includes their personal home which is a magical maze full of treasures. I have never seen so much art and sculpture and pottery and trinkets and souvenirs and momentos...the list goes on. It's a feast for the eyes. Everywhere you look there is something to explore. The house is divided up by season as well; for example, there is a "summer room" downstairs that has A/C, or the "Spring room" which has a handmade wooden murphy bed platform ON THE BALCONY that pulls down to sleep on. There is a fishtank for a wall by the tub indoors, or one could use the outdoor shower they crafted. They even have their own giant bar attached to the home. Walking around there is surreal; it makes you want an entirely different life. We also got to see a couple studios in which the owners (and visiting artists) work. So friggin cool. They do all sorts of workshops and also host celebrations/festivals/exhibitions of sorts (like the one I went to, or a salsa competition (the kind you eat ;). I encourage you to find any reason you can to get out there. The whole experience felt hippy dippy trippy to the max; by that I mean it didn't reek of patchouli or pot, but rather of a better place and time gone past where everyone was encouraged to be whoeverthefuck they want to be and express that however they wish (in dress, through art, or the way they live, who they love, and so on) and all were accepted, and appreciated. Good music, drank, and people all mashed up. Love.
