I've often found myself waving for attention, desperate to order after being forgotten by the waitresses for 10-15 minutes at a time. Even though I order the same thing every time (chicken box) my order's been messed up too many times to count, and the staff are prone to arguing over an order instead of just admitting their mistakes. I'm fairly chilled out and lenient on waitstaff, but I have no tolerance for situations where they make me feel stupid and embarrassed for no reason other than saving their own hides. The food is still good, and lunch can be a good deal - dinner is very overpriced, though. Some days are better than others.

Love, love, love it here. I came some distance to try Shanklin Cafe out after noting its lofty…read morerating and excellent reputation. These things are very well deserved. This is a very fine bistro restaurant that I'd score an easy 4.6 taking account of all key measures, food, service and decor. A top place. The excellent 50c had a superb experience here today. It was his choice of venue so he may have to be upgraded to 75c given how could Shanklin is. Shanklin is a beautiful warm pleasingly designed space with decorated in a very pleasant modern style. We were very happy to escape the cool, wet and windy Melbourne morning and we happily set ourselves up inside. The soft well chosen music playing helped make for a comfortable and cosy atmosphere. We couldn't have been happier. Various earlier reviewers have praised the staff here. It's easy to see why. They're great. I received a lovely smiling greeting as soon as I entered. The pleasant and attentive standards didn't waver through the whole experience. The staff also looked to be enjoying themselves which makes for a nice workplace as well as delighted customers. I started with a beautiful coffee, a long black with accompanying mini jug of cold milk which was made to an excellent level. I took advice on food, due to difficulty of choosing between the Shanklin breakfast - essentially the big brekkie - the baked eggs and the signature dish, Eggs and Shanklish. I chose the last which is scrambled eggs with fresh herbs, cherry tomatoes, spring onion, wilted spinach and mint. I added bacon and avocado as well. Cracking dish. Lovely flavours. Immensely satisfying. Lovely texture, beautiful flavours, generous serve. It met every need. 75c had the Portobello Mushroom which sounded and looked fantastic. He declared it superb with an authority that excluded all argument. We shared a Madfish sparking over our brunches. Delicious it was too. It went very nicely with the food. I can why people like me travel a little out of the way to get to Shanklin. It's a very, very good cafe bistro. Everything operates in impressive harmony. That's why it was buzzing today. The rating captures Shanklin accurately. It's a great place. Highly recommended.

They seem to know all their regulars too. There is limited seating in the cafe (~three tables inside, and 2 small ones outside), though it's one of those places great for your grab-and-go. In the city where it costs a fair bit much (for me) to dine in a cafe on a daily basis, 3 Little Monkeys is pocket-friendly (affordable). They do breakfast deals ($5) and lunch deals ($8? $8.50?) - an item off the food cabinet (for breakfast, only the ones on the top row and sweet case) and a small coffee (get a size upgrade for 50cents). With a whole alley full of little cafes offering different food+coffee options and deals, it is tempting to try every one of them. Albeit, once I am hooked, I will always go back. And I have. Keep up the great work, ladies!

I wasn't interested in the tourist traps and Degrave Street was too full on for my mood at the time. Brown Sugar, whilst busy, had a nice little table at the back that welcomed me in with the warm hand of an old friend. Service was friendly and inviting. I felt like a glass of red, they recommended the Crowded House Pinot Noir (2010), a cracking little New Zealand pinot. The menu was probably a little too broad - at least from the perspective of it being hard to choose something, it all looked so good. I went the beans on cornbread. The beans were creamy and perfectly seasoned. The cornbread an interesting base - a little doughy, but balanced perfectly with the beans and some good bacon on the side. I enjoyed the Crowded House so much I went a second glass, so unfortunately didn't get to try the coffee. But I am sure it would have been good. 4/5

Sometimes it's good to go to a place like this just to help gauge how good much of the rest of Melbourne's food scene is. So, how was it then. I'd say just ok and largely endorse the current low or mid range rating. I'd give it 2.7, just above a pass. It's a pleasant open cafe/bistro with a modern fit out. It was doing a very good trade when we arrived and we were told we might have to wait up to 20 minutes for our meals. The menu looked ok with some reasonable sounding dishes on it. We were served quickly and pleasantly. I started with a coffee which was average but ok, I thought. No prizes but no no major problems either. I had the chilli scrambled eggs for main. It had decent heat but with an unusual spice or spices which left a slightly odd after taste. On the plus size the dish was moderately well presented and was a decent size. There was a good serve of bacon as I'd added that as an extra. The grilled chilli on top of the dish was a nice touch. The egg itself in the dish was cooked reasonably well. I also tried the bruschetta. I've never encountered one like it. The tomato was cut into long slices instead of being diced. The bread (not toast) barely had any oil on it so it hadn't softened and was excessively chewy. The method did not make it easy or pleasant to eat. On the plus side one of our party had the arancini balls and enjoyed them. Overall, it's an average place for me with fairly prosaic food. But, it was a pleasant and convenient place in the middle of Westfield Doncaster to prop and have a nice catch up.
