Star Productions DJs

(7 reviews)

TLDR: Hiring Star Production DJs was my biggest wedding regret. I wanted to leave my own wedding…read moreearly because I was so embarrassed about the DJ. Spoiler: They don't actually mix music - they just press play on a Spotify playlist/control the volume. It all started with the fact that I couldn't get anyone to talk to me until the week of my wedding. I chased them down a few times leading up, when I finally got connected to Jim aka "JIMBO" about three days before the event. I had some interesting/unique requests (it was a multicultural event, so needed to mix music from 2 different countries) that I wanted to clear by and hear the perspective of a professional DJ/mixer. When speaking to Jim, it felt like he was not listening to my requests or questions. He talked over me and just kept saying "how easy it was going to be." I had to just give in at some point and hope he got the gist of what I needed, but I obviously still had reservations after our call. It turned out I was right to have them. At the wedding, he disrespected my father when he asked for basic things (like, "it's getting to be dinner, please let the guests into the reception space, who are older and need to sit down"), instead Jim only wanted to listen to my mom, who was naturally busy and couldn't always be on deck to answer his questions or give direction. Jim didn't interpret any of our social cues correctly - he cut off the dad/daughter dance after about 30 seconds...even though it was really emotional and clearly we needed more time. (The crowd literally boo'd when he cut us off and my dad was like "not yet!") Jim routinely interrupted our most special and intimate moments, like when my now-husband and I were catching a moment just the two of us "backstage." He just waltzed in and started talking about his wife ... like bro, we're trying to just have a moment here? Also, the equipment he brought was plain faulty. Music stopped playing at multiple points in the evening. Dave, his manager/owner of the company, tried to pass this outage off as a "memorable moment" when my friends jumped in to sing and cover up the awkward pause. As if we had a choice when the music blows out mid chorus. Most of all, I was disappointed that there was no mixing involved--THIS is what a DJ does! Instead, Jim just stood there for 2 hours and pressed play on a Spotify playlist that I made. He didn't have a mixer or a turntable, he didn't do any remixing, dropping, transitioning, or anything else. I could have done what he did -- and charging more than 1,000 dollars for that is just unjustified. Leading up to my event, I spent hours filling out the online form that was provided and purposefully wanted to schedule and intro call way in advance to ensure my bases were covered. I also wanted to know about their mixing capabilities in advance (turns out there were 0 capabilities). And when I asked Jim about where his mixing equipment was the night of the wedding, he basically said, "oh I don't have the software for that, it's too expensive." When I raised this to Dave, he was like "your music requests were fulfilled." Sure man - but I didn't just hire some guy to press play and monitor the volume dial! My 5-year-old cousin could've done that. At the end of the day, it is not just about playing the songs I asked for--that's the literal bare minimum. On top of this, I had to frequently prompt Jim to make announcements about dessert, etc. Very annoying. Again, it just felt like we all had to work veryyy hard to keep the momentum going during the dancing portion of the party, which I was looking forward to. Lots of our guests can vouch that Jim was sub-par. We all started to feel the need to leave my wedding when we had 2 hours still left in the venue! And that's just a damn shame. When I raised all of the above to Dave, he provided 0 recourse. So do yourself a favor and hire someone else.

I would have given 0 stars, if that had been an option. Bottom Line: extremely poor customer…read moreservice on the part of the owner, Dave Wilkins. DJ Chris hosted my wedding, and he was great. However, prior to the wedding he was late to our face-to-face meeting. After 20 minutes of waiting in a Barnes and Noble, I texted him to find out where he was. He responded that he was running late and that he'd be there soon. Now, I don't necessarily have a problem with people running late (life happens). It was the fact that he hadn't even tried to reach out to me, to let me know. This was my first impression of the company, and honestly, it didn't sit well. When Chris did arrive, he was friendly, connected, and had a good attitude. He didn't have all of the songs we wanted (which is fine), but asked me to get them to him on a flash drive before the wedding. "Uhh... No..." - Is what I said. I was planning a wedding, and that was the last thing I had time for. When I contacted Dave, the owner, to make him aware of these two little red flags I had, he defended Chris and basically made me feel like I was being unreasonable for expecting what I consider to be a certain level of professionalism. After that first response, I was really worried about what kind of service I was going to receive at my wedding, but had already paid so had to swallow it and cross my fingers. DJ Chris was great at my wedding. He was patient, outgoing, had a fun personality, and was professional. However, the assistant he brought along, was completely inappropriate. Firstly, he spent WAY too much time at the food table. During cocktail hour it was noted by several of my guests, that he was hanging out behind the table, snacking, the whole time. Now, I didn't mind my photographer or dj grabbing food here or there, but, according to several sources, he was practically camped out there, and it just looked unprofessional. The other complaint I got, from 4 separate women, INCLUDING MY WIFE, was that they caught him "oogling" their bodies. It was put this way, several times: "that he was looking at me like he was thinking about what he wanted to do to me." This is completely disgusting and unacceptable, and I was furious I had thrown a party that subjected my guests to this kind of behavior. When I emailed Dave about it, to let him know what kind of people were representing his company, he literally responded with one sentence "Thanks for letting me know..." (Yes, with those dot dot dots.) What sheer stupidity as a business owner! - even more reason for a 0 star rating. The LEAST he could have done was responded empathetically and apologized for his staff's behavior. Assured us he was going to do something about it. At least say something, as we had just paid him 800 Freakin dollars!!!! Had he done this, I still would have written a yelp review, because I wouldn't want this to happen at anyone else's wedding, but I would have given him credit for being a stand up guy who treated us like paying customers. I'd recommend steering clear of Star Productions DJs.
