Opened back in 1968, it's grown into the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean and one of the biggest in Latin America, with three levels packed full of shops, big-name stores, and plenty of solid food options to keep you fueled while you weave through it all. It's clean, easy to navigate, and perfectly placed so instead of running all over town, you knock everything out in one go and get back to the good stuff.

Regrettably my Spanish sucks, and thankfully many of the staff were bilingual and made it easy for me to communicate with them. Had a great time, took a beach break and did a little splurge shopping! I visited during second week of December so I should have seen this retail store at its worst. Instead, I saw every single skincare and bath product in place by color, no random pajamas mixed in with the shoes, nothing. No funny business anywhere which was a total first for me. Everyone I talked with in Spanish was helpful and friendly. Only gripe I have is probably a result of the buyers and not the specific store - I was looking for a cheaper suitcase under 50 dollars and they had nothing besides a Jordan backpack. I think it is based on what's selling so again not a total big deal but still. This store felt like a retail willy Wonka land of awesome!!

This time I kept my eyes plastered to the side of every building as I walked and that's how I found it. Simple, dimly lit signage on the building of a barely lit street. Once inside, it almost feels like a regular Marshall's, just much smaller. If you just need something quick and/or specific, this location is fine. If you're wanting to SHOP shop, go to the one in Viejo San Juan; it's massive in comparison.

The supercenter was very large and had most items for everyday living, at prices that I'm assuming locals find acceptable. It is two stories, with a multi-level parking garage below. The first floor is mainly the grocery store portion, with the upper floor being the typical 'Walmart' discount department retailer items, connected by a cool moving ramp (travelators) that allows carts to be brought along as well. Later learned that the wheels are locked not by magnets, but by a mechanical system where tiny grooves in the wheels interlock with the moving meta track, to make the cart immobile while on the track. I tried it out and it definitely worked as advertised. The location required a car to get there from the cruise ports, thus were not really used by many tourists/visitors when we got there. They did have a small tourist/souvenir section upstairs, but there was nothing that our group wanted, and prices seemed similar to the many shops in the tourist section of Old San Juan. We did buy a small bottle of locally produced vanilla, and did find that the games section had Pokemon cards for sales, that we took advantage of. Payment was through a self-checkout area, and my Walmart+ membership was recognized via my entered phone number, delivering the receipt via email. There are 13 Walmart supercenters in Puerto Rico, with this 150,000 square feet one opening in 2013. Our private tour guide did mention that we were the first group of hers that specifically asked to stop by a Walmart. I joked that maybe on our next visit, she could take us to a Costco nearby on the island.
